Thanks for the test Sandy. The magnification on the DA 300 is pretty useful.

For DA*60-250mm owners, is it too soft?

Hi Nitrok,

The first time I encounter this glow problem was that I was shooting at the MFD of my Sigma 100-300 F4 at 300mm f4, stopping down to 4.5 or f5 solve it. Further testing into the problem reveal that it could be a front focus issue combined with shallow DOF using camera auto focus. I shot 2 sets of pic today and the top pic with the glow problem is shot using AUTO focus. The bottom pic with no glow is shot using using MANUAL focus. Both set pics are shot with the same settings. Pics are only crop and resized, nothing else is applied. If you need the original image, PM me your email address that can accept minimum13mb attachment. Hope this helps.

Set 1: 300mm, F4, ISO6400, Shutter 1/1600

Set 2: 300mm, F4, ISO6400, Shutter 1/400

Set 2, bottom pic. The focus point is on no.19 (center of the pic and plane of focus). The calender is not level and slope downwards towards no.4 (top row and slightly out of plane of focus) and there is VERY VERY slight glow on the top row which may or may not be discernible for some people.

Hi Nitrok,

In your 2 examples above, what is the distance between the camera and subject?

I'm in China. In terms of usefulness, I used the Sigma 18-50mm 80%, DA 50-135mm 15% and Sigma 10-20mm 5%. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the share. I'm still contemplating whether to upgrade from my Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 macro. Just quite unsure how much increases optical performance beside the HSM and OS which I don't really care about.

Hmm...some contribution from me. These are taken at different focal length, so the zoom is not only for birding only.

I see, sorry about that part on handheld. Maybe you have a front or back focus issue then.

Sigma 100-300 F4 question(s)...4 IMGS

When I got this lens, it took me half a day of testing to determine that it was front focus by 10mm and my K20D resolve it easily in the adjustment. BTW, with you handholding at 300mm , your shuttle speed is to low make the test accurate. Crank your shuttle to 1/320 F4 and test again. Many times, I found it was camera shake that caused my focus to be out and therefore soft or blurry shots. I could handheld this lens maximum at 1/60 @ 300mm but that was in a room and I am leaning against the wall. Once I am outside, I try to maintain at 1/250 if possible and if it goes lower, I will steady myself before I take a shot.

Hi,

Just a question to the owners. When using the lens in manual mode, do you need to pull the clutch in to M on the lens and at the same time, switch to M on the camera body? I had the Sigma 100-300mm F4 and that was what I needed to do.

I gotten this lens not too long ago and I like to ask the experience users about when using a TC, does the TC send the correct FL data to the camera for the SR to work correctly? Like using a 1.4x and zoom to 300mm and the camera read it as 420mm?
