Thanks for all the replies.
I guess if K-30 can't focus during movies, that puts it out of the consideration. Is K-50 able to focus during recording?
AF for stills (sports, kids) is very important.
Video is not top priority for me but I would at least like to have 720 with AF during recording. Since I am going to be carrying DSLR around, I do not want any extra gear for movies in case I want to record something.

I used to be a Pentax user. A while ago I was inquiring here about K-01 as a comeback camera but was put off by no AF option during video recording. Now, that's long gone so I am looking at K-30. What's holding me back though is my experience with AF on Pentax bodies. As much I like Pentax brand, I couldn't stand my K10D slow AF. When I jumped ship and replaced the K10D with Nikon D60 I was wow'ed by the fast AF. But that camera is gone as well.
So I am considering Pentax again. What I would like to know is, are there any parents shooting K-30 that are happy with the AF performance for chasing your kids at the playground. I need good camera with fast AF for sport shoots and low light photography. Mostly using primes or fast fixed focal lenses.
Thanks.

Thanks for replies. The 55 f/1.4 is nice but too big. I am trying to put together a setup with small to medium size DSLR body and a small 35mm or 55mm prime lens. Sigma has the 50mm f/1.4 but while nice and bright, the price is $200 more than the f/1.8 lens.
Why built-in motor? I guess I got spoiled. I used to have Pentax setup before but the AF was too slow and unable to keep up with my kids. I have switched to Nikon (D60 with AF-S lenses) and liked the camera a lot (quiet and fast AF). I no longer have the Nikon and since I want to get back into DSLRs, I thought of Pentax. I just do not really want the screw drive type AF.

I have checked the current offerings in 50mm and 35mm from Pentax and I do not see any DC or SDM lenses. Does Pentax offer any 50mm or 35mm primes with built-in motor?

Cool. Now, I just need to unload some audio gear to make funds for the new camera purchase. :)

Thank you!
I guess the K30 camera is compatible with the SDM and DC lenses and can drive them?

I really tried to search but the whole lineup of k-mount lenses while offers great backwards compatibility, it is sort of confusing. I am trying to determine if Pentax offers lenses with built-in motors (equivalent of Nikon's AF-S or Canon's USM). I am mostly interested in 50mm prime with built in motor as opposed to screw drive type system.
Thanks.

Hmm? No AF during movie recording may be a deal breaker here. My small P&S does offer focusing during movie but I do not want to carry two cameras.
The new MX-1 looks promising. If I read correctly that "The AV/AE-Lock button sets autofocus in movie mode, and locks exposure in still mode.", it should have AF ability during movie recording.

The P&S I have is Nikon P300 which has pretty fast lens f/1.8 but that's only at the wide angle. It goes to f/4.9 at the other end. While f/1.8 is nice, I rarely use it because of the focal length it is available with. I rather have fast 50mm lens on APS-C sensor that will give me nice combination for portrait type shots.
As to the movie mode, it is a requirement but does not have to be perfect. What's not so good about K-01 movie mode?
Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks for replying Adam.
I am not printing my photos. They are usually viewed on TV or a laptop so honestly, I do not want to deal with RAW and post processing. JPEGs are fine.

I would like to buy a camera that would be a good system for low light situations. I have P&S which I like but sometimes I miss my now sold DSLR. I was thinking of getting a body, putting a prime lens on it (f/1.4 or so) and keep that for when I need fast lens. I have read good reviews about K-01 but I am curious if there are any (read: better) alternatives. What I need in the camera is movie mode and ability to accept fast prime lens. No need to have huge lens compatibility as I am not planning on changing lenses. Also, smaller is better which is why I am looking at the K-01. Also, since I have P&S I would like to get body with larger sensor (APS-C).
Any recommendations?

I used to visit this forum a lot when I had Pentax camera. I think I have about 500 posts so I am not Pentaxian. Also I have not made a donation because I sold my Pentax gear more than half a year ago.
Anyway, I came back to the forum because I have one or two Pentax items left that I wanted to post for free in the Marketplace. Unfortunately, I can't because of the new rules. So is there a way to bypass the new rules for free items?

I think used K10D or new K20D have all the features you need except decent low light performance. None of those cameras have built-in AF assist light and you will see that when lighting is poor AF will hunt. I was told that new KM is way better than K20D or K10D when it comes to low light focusing but I have not played with this camera.
Anyway, if you can live with that, second-hand K10D or new K20D would be far better choices than pretty much anything else within your budget.

That's an idea but in the original package, shipping cost depending on location would probably be close to half of the card's price.

Live view is not available in istDL2. The only way to look at the subject is thru the viewfinder.
You will need to upgrade your camera to one that supports live view.

I will second what Toshi said. AF is not a very strong point for Pentax. I found it slow in less than ideal lighting conditions. The kit lens on the other hand is very good. I doubt you can match its IQ with anything else that costs $100. Used lens will be even cheaper because you can get one for about $60.
