That is a very nice image. I have been watching lots of landscape videos on Youtube and a common tip is to look for "s" curves. You nailed it here.

I have been using ON1 2018 for a couple of months and really like it. The only issue is my old PC. The machine is about 7-8 years old running 64 bit Win 7 with 4 Gb of RAM. Working on RAW files from my K3 is frustratingly slow so if you were tempted by ON1 (or Luminar which I also have tried) test them with the trial versions thoroughly. I am putting up with it as I intend to update the PC soon .

This is the front wall of a antique shop in Maldon, Central Victoria. Maldon is in the middle of an old gold mining precinct, so a lot of old and interesting buildings. Taken with my K10D, can't recall which lens (its not in the Exif data)

I have been playing with ON1 2018 for the last couple of weeks and am pretty impressed. I never used LR only Photoshop CS5 and I must say it is heaps easier to use the that version of PS. There are heaps of Youtube tutorials which are really helpful. I would recommend Anthony Morganti and Steven Dempsey videos.) There is also a discount code on Anthony Morganti's youtube videos that get another decent discount (that what made me take the plunge)
I has already committed to Luminar, but I found it slow on my PC and after the jupiter update, there were openGL issues that made the software crash as soon as you loaded a raw file. ON1 had a similar openGL issue with their 2018.5 release but they managed to fix it and issue a patch within a few days. To clarify, my PC is a 7 year old Compaq running Win 7 so that was probably most of the problem.
I will be interested to see if Skylum have fixed their problems with the latest release.

I have noticed that as well. A few of the photos I have posted look very flat compared with how they look when viewed directly

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. I am now the owner of a Sigma 17-50 that came up for a very good price on eBay. I haven't had a chance to really test it yet due to the totally uninspiring Ballarat weather at the moment but hopefully will get a chance this weekend. It is so quiet compared to the 18-55 kit lens that I have and the weight seems to balance the K3 just nicely.

That's pretty cool, I started to play around with timelapse on my K3 yesterday bu my results weren't worth publishing. I got inspired to try after listening to Mike Olbinski on an old episode of the Nonamephotoshow podcast the other day. Search on Monsoon 4 for a really impressive storm timelapse

I knew it was going to be in Australia as soon as I saw your description.
Being from Tassie originally, I know how quick the weather can change!!
I see you used the Sigma 17-50. I am contemplating getting this myself for the same sort situations. Another forum member pointed out the weight to me, do you find it too heavy to hand hold for this sort of work?

Your are right about that, thanks for pointing it out. Looking at the weight specs, it is about 200g heavier than my 18-125. Starting to think maybe I should keep an eye out for 2nd hand Pentax 16-85

Thanks DW58, this shot was one those more good luck than good management situations. I was wandering around the house trying out different lenses on my new toy and there Monty (the cat) was. Lucky the manual lens was wide open, lucky I had already an appropriate shutter speed so it a quick focus and shoot.

Thanks for the responses.
As I like to do landscapes, I am perhaps leaning towards the 17-50 after reading all of your comments. I do have the 18-125 for more walk around situations so I think the combination of these 2 lenses would give the quality in the landscapes and the versatility in the every day.
Steve_k - thanks for the 16-85 suggestion, the WR is appealing but the cost of a new version in Aus is over $900 which I can't justify. Will keep a look out for a good pre-loved version though.
seventysixersfan - thanks for those links, this topic had a fair bit of discussion over the years
So all I have to now is keep an eye out on all the usual locations for the best buy.
Thanks again, John

Hi everyone
I have just upgraded from a K10D to a K3 and am thinking of getting some better quality glass for the new toy. I currently have a Sigma 18-125 which is a very useful range but sometimes I think images could be sharper.
So after reading the reviews here it appears both are well regarded lens, so I am torn between a perception of higher IQ with the 17-50 f2.8 EX or the versatility of the 17-70 f2.8
I would really be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience of both of these lenses.
How does the 17-50 f2.8-4.5 compare to the constant f2.8 EX version. It is significantly cheaper but I want an uplift in image quality so price is not necessarily going to be the deciding factor
Thanks in advance
John

Had a play today with a body cap pinhole. Pretty boring subject matter (our backyard) but an interesting experiment. This is 5 vertical frames stitched with Panorama Pro

Here are a few night shots of the White Night Festival in Ballarat, Australia. Taken using the K10D hand held at 1/15th sec/ F 2.8 ISO 400 using a Tokina 28mm lens. Images have been processed using Luminar to sharpen and correct distortions. Really pleased with the results given the technique used.
