Not bad at all. Someone new to Pentax or DSLRs could bundle the Plastic Fantastic for another 112 and have a capable kit for little money. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll be passing on the link right away to someone I know looking to buy their first DSLR.

That is funny. :-) Will the hound tip a can/bottle over to get better access? Serious question. A friend of mine once had a Saint Bernard that would tip over beer bottles with her nose.

I had a somewhat similar experience with a brand new mid-range filter a few years ago. I think it was a Kenko. Definite IQ degradation with filter. Out of curiosity I passed the filter off to a neighbor who is a pro photog. He ran test shots and thought the filter substandard. Latter I pass the filter off to another neighbor who is an engineer. He brought to the filter to work where he and co-worker ran some sort of tests for kicks, don't ask me what, but they too thought the filter crap. They all thought the filter probably not a counterfeit since the coating quite good. The problem was the glass itself. Badly flawed according to the engineers.
So it seems it was just my bad luck that I bought a flawed filter that somehow made it past QC. Perhaps the same for you?
Looking back I think the four of us experienced the perfect storm of too much time on our hands. :-)

Surely can be done. I was recently asked by a friend to put together a DSLR kit for her 13-year-old daughter. Budget of 600USD. Everything had to be new with warranty. Easy enough. 600 covered a Pentax K-50 bundle including a 18-55, 50-200, AF200FG, kit bag and card. Also a DA 35/2.4 purchased separately.
All worked out. The little girl was so happy she shed a few tears, the parents relieved that their budget wasn't busted.
+1 Pentax forum members for pointing out solid deals. Last I heard the kid and her K-50 are inseparable. The little girl's father, a Canikon fundamentalist initially less than thrilled with his offspring's heresy, is now questioning his faith. :-)

Otron. An early 'affordable' LCD quartz made/assembled 1976 in South Korea. Was originally purchased in the UK for the equiv. of approx. 125USD. This would be just over 400USD today. Very well made stainless steel case/band and so I'm told by a relative, the original owner, contains a Swiss movement. Appears to be about 3/4 seconds fast per month. Not bad at all and I suspect could be made more accurate properly regulated.

Hhhmmm.... I'll a little creeped out that Ed appears to be producing his youtubes, and hopefully not IEDs, from the finished attic of my elderly in-laws home. Aside from that I've enjoyed the comments spurred by Ed's youtube.
Perhaps I should call the in-laws and ask if they recall renting out their attic....

The focus ring is quite stiff. Stiff enough to leave one thinking it's broken or will soon be broken while attempting focus. No worries. It's just poorly designed and manufactured. Exactly the craptastic lens I expected, received and enjoy. :)

Have look @ Marumi Super DHG. Very high quality less the high price. As I recall my own 40.5 Super DHG CPL was 30USD on sale. Typically the price is 50-55USD.

"Are we really THAT rare?" I suspect we are. This past Friday I attended an event where I brought along an original Pentax Q. The moment I flip open the never-ready case I hear "Cool. A classic camera user" from one woman, "Nice. 110?" from another. Before I could respond to either women a younger man steps forward and says, "Digital, not film. Q, right?". For a moment I was speechless. I soon learned that the the two women had no idea that Pentax "still made cameras" and was pleasantly surprised that the young guy knew a Q when he saw one. Turns out the brother of the young guy is a "Pentax fanatic" who loves/uses the Q10(?) and K-3.
Both women expressed interest in the Q system. Perhaps we'll be a tiny bit less rare in the near future. :-)

Interesting observation. I have two friends who each managed photo labs up to roughly the peak usage of film. Each saw the handwriting on the wall and changed professions. Anyway....Both have said that substantially less than ten percent of the images that passed before their eyes appeared be the result of any artistic intent. Good, bad or ugly. The vast majority of images being little different than what are found on social media sites now. Having looked through family photo albums that span 100+ years I have to say that the motivations were clearly about documenting people, events, places for social reasons just like today. The intent never art/craft and lot less narcissism. I get the impression that the prior generations were more about we than me. At least with my family.
The "good stuff"/2%+ that shows up in the family albums was clearly made with artistic intent and for most part expensive to very expensive - one great uncle used Contax I kit late 30s on - gear. Not unlike how a fair chunk, not all, of the "good stuff" we see today is made with obvious artistic intent and expensive...ish gear. I'm getting off track here....
To answer the OP? No. The only difference today is that the all shoe boxes and photo albums of yesteryear have evolved and are now only a few clicks/taps/swipes away in the cloud. Right along with the 2% that ain't crap as Dartmoor Dave points out. What part of that don't Kate Upton, Jennifer Lawrence and others just not get? Anyway...... Separate subject. :-)

Wow... With all the recent stories of inappropriate relationships between teachers and students your thinking aloud could have caused you no end of misery. Only days before you heard the end of it? You got off light.
I made a comment at my son's elementary with the worst possible timing. Just as I stepped up to the door of his classroom and began to turn the handle a teacher walked up to my immediate right. I look to my right to face her as I pushed the classroom door open. I should add that the classrooms all open to a covered walkway and not an enclosed hallway. The teacher I faced was wiping sweat from her face and said, "98 degrees..... Must be a new record for May." I replied as I continued to open the door with, "Whoa... That's hot!" thinking it's not just me it really is usually hot.
This is the worst timing part. As I opened the door saying "Whoa... That's hot!" one of the teachers aides was bending down to pickup a notebook immediately in front of the open door.... This aide was an attractive woman mid 20s and her derriere....... I'll just say she didn't lose the genetic lottery. My son's teacher and the second aide were obviously appalled with what I had just blurted out.... Instead of the usual warm and friendly greeting from the teacher and the second aide they were both very cool. Just barely civil.
I could not believe how bad all that looked. My face must have been the colour of a beet. All I could do was collect my kid, say goodbye and leave... The teacher and second aide didn't respond. The aide who had won the genetic lottery flashed a sly little smile and said, "See y'all tomorrow."
The teacher and the second aide became less cool towards me by the end of the school year. The genetic lottery winner.... She was always very pleasant. :-)
Had I been a teacher at my son's school I would have plenty of explaining to do. lol

These old publications can being endlessly fascinating for myself. Articles, ads and all. Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
That Marmon ad is nice.The Marmon 34 was a high performance car in it's day. Expensive as well being 3100USD at introduction. Adjusted for inflation roughly 65-70K USD today. The adjusted price doesn't really entirely put things in perspective. It's interesting that Nordyke & Marmon chose to run full page ads in NG. Marketing folks even one-hundred years ago were pretty clever and understood demographics better than might be assumed.
I had completely forgotten about how easy it was to purchased dynamite at one time. One of my now deceased great uncles told me how he used dynamite to clear a temporary levee for an irrigation canal he'd built mid 1920s. The problem was he set the charge off at 4:00 AM since he had "to get an early start on the day". Folks, including the Sheriff, were upset at being awakened by the blast at 4:00 AM instead of the usual crack of dawn. The Sheriff threatened my great uncle with a charge of being a public nuance if he ever detonated another charge before day break. BTW, the blast forced a number of fish to surface in the creek opposite the levee. The upside was the my great uncle and the Sheriff had plenty of fresh fish for lunch. :-)
Winder, My teen and pre-teen years weren't unlike yours. Different world.

Yes! Meaningful practice matters. Also absolutely true of learning to use a firearm properly and efficiently. I learned to use a firearm before learning to use a camera. Learning to use a firearm first has certainly affected the way I went about photography. I've never become a digital 'machine gunner'. It shocked me the first time I read of a non-pro wearing out a DSLR shutter within one year.... 100K+ shutter actuations? I don't get that. Anyway...
Years later I realized that the best/better photographers in my family all had one thing in common....Advanced firearm training via military service. No way that is a coincidence. Has to be the result of disciplined, meaningful practice/training. A long deceased uncle was said to "never miss" with either an 03 Springfield or Contax rangefinder. :-) He learned the Springfield before learning the Contax.
