My K-01's

I would love to have a K-02 with FF and EVF but I probably could not afford it. However, A K-02 with the new 24 mp (or better) sensor like the one in the KP and improved AF would make a really nice Christmas present to myself.

My K-01's

I love my K-01 so much I have stopped buying DSLR's (I already have three - all Pentax). The K-01 has become my "go to" camera. I have really come to appreciate the mirrorless features and I don't miss the optical viewer anymore at all. Although I grew up with my eye glued to the optical viewfinder of my 35mm SLR I wear glasses now and I like that I can use live view with my glasses on and not miss anything. I sincerely hope that Pentax eventually offers a K-02.They can leave the camera pretty much as is just give me the latest greatest sensor upgrade and I will be happy.

Looking for film recommendations

My "go to" film stocks are Kodak Tri-X for B&W and Portra 400 for color. I also like Ektar for pinhole work but I have had a lot of fun experimenting with odd and different films. The Film Photography Project Store (see link below) has an incredible variety of film available. Some are hand rolled and not available anywhere else and they have very quick turn around and delivery. I have gone online and ordered film on Monday and received it on Thursday and that's via regular mail.

Great points! I especially appreciate the car analogy and I agree. If switching from a Ford to a Chevy was as difficult as switching from a Pentax to a Canon DSLR the result would be increased traffic accidents. I suppose that is one reason why I have stayed with Pentax all these years. It didn't matter so much when all of us shot manual 35mm SLR's. They were all pretty much the same and the technicals were quickly mastered. Then the automatics started showing up on the market and things got complicated. With the advent of digital it go so bad for a while I went back to manual 35mm SLR's because I got tired of shooting everything on Auto with the expected mediocre results. I just could never seem to figure out how to do what I wanted to do with the DSLR. I can handle just about anything now and am often consulted by family & friends about how to properly use various features on their cameras but it has taken years and dedication to tame the DSLR and I am certain there is still much I do not know. I am certain the complexity of the modern DSLR does much to kill creativity in many folks and has given rise to the Lomo movement.

I bought my wife a Tamron 18-200 for her K-500 and she hasn't taken it off the camera since. For the price you can't beat it as an "all in one" lens to kick around with.

I too have the Promaster version with the 50/1.9. Great little camera that takes amazing pictures for the price. Just be careful with it. Its more plastic than metal and won't take a lot of abuse.

Why can't we have a sensor in there with our film? As I posted earlier, some SLT technology adding optional live view and continuous phase detect AF would be sweet. Polaroid was working on instant developed 35mm film at one time. Let's throw that in too. Why Can't We Have Our Cake AND Eat It too?

I would like a version of Sony's SLT technology on my ZX-L to add optional live view and continuous phase detection autofocus. That would be sweet.

Hey, I am still Jazzed about the K-1000 but that doesn't make it a new camera. The 67ii was released in 1998 - again, 20th century technology. I don't know of any but there probably are a couple new cameras released in the past 10 years but no new technology. As you said, all the R&D money has gone into new digital sensors and shutters etc. My point was not to debate what camera was released when but to simply point out that just because the camera manufacturers abandoned further developing film cameras in favor of digital doesn't mean that the film cameras were nearly as advanced as they might have become.

---------- Post added 11-03-15 at 05:59 AM ----------

Not debating best at all - the LX was awesome! I was just pointing out there has been no new film camera technology released in the 21st century. The LX was released in the early 1980s I believe.

No memo - it just happened. All the R&D into new and better cameras went digital 10 - 12 years ago. The last new Pentax film camera was released in 2003, Nikon 2004. There may be an exception out there somewhere but us film shooters are generally using 20th century cameta technology. It's still better than digital in some respects but I wonder how great it might be with 10 more years of R&D added in.

Hey, I realize the odds are against a K-02 but if you can't dream you may as well hang it up so here's my plea for a new mirrorless like my beloved K-01 but with an updated sensor, faster AF and yeah, maybe a tilt screen. I don't care much about a viewer but if they want to throw that in so much the better for all those who have a problem with Live View.

Actually you bring up a good point. If digital technology hadn't "pulled the rug out from under film technology" when it did who knows what wonders we might see today in film cameras. APS was pretty advanced stuff for its day and the Pentax ist was a super sophisticated 35mm film camera before Pentax released the digital version that I still own and shoot.

This question required a little of thought...and I am almost ashamed to admit that I own so many cameras but most were bought on the cheap and I have used all of them and continue to use most of them to take pictures.

...and yes, film and processing is still available for all of these cameras.

(1) Pentax 110 with (2) lenses & flash (shoots 110 film)
(1) Rollei A-110 (shoots 110 film)
(6) working 35mm K Mount SLR bodies and (7) assorted K-mount lenses (MF and AF, Prime & Zoom)
(1) 35mm Yashica SLR body with (3) lenses
I also have a couple (2) Olympus XA2's (35mm)
(1) Olympus Stylus (also 35mm) P&S
(1) 35mm Kit Pinhole Camera
(5) 127 box cameras
(3) 620 roll film box cameras and
(1) 620 roll film Folder
(3) 120 roll film Holgas (two of them are pinhole cameras)
(1) 120 roll film Yashica TLR
(1) Fujifilm Mini Instax (Polaroid Type) Camera
(1) Fujifilm Instax 210 Wide (Polaroid Type) Camera

Then there are the digitals...
(3) Pentax DSLR's (istDL, K-10 & K-500)
(1) Pentax K-01 Mirrorless
(6) dedicated APS-C, K-Mount lenses
(1) Nikon Coolpix P-300 P&S
(1) Fujifilm Finepix Real 3-D Stereo Camera

I am not really looking to expand into other systems (in fact I just gave the 35mm Yashica & lenses to my son) but I think I might enjoy a Pentax 6x7 if I could find a good deal on one and I do hope Pentax eventually comes out with another APS-C Mirrorless.

Which is the Better Buy: K-01 or K-30?

Everyone assumes the DSLR's are the "top of the food chain" but in 10 years mirrorless cameras like the K-01 will have taken over. I am old enough to remember that before SLR's we all shot rangefinders and thought they were "the thing." Get the K-01 now at a super discount and get the 40mm lens on the cheap while you can. An fine second hand 18x50 zoom can be added later for under $100 if you decide you want or need one. You'll never see a 40XS for that kind of price. Personally however, if I'm going to lug around a zoom I prefer the Tamron 18x200. With that and the 40 you won't ever need much else.

For the money you can't hardly beat the K-01. I got mine with the 40mm lens and use it all the time even though I have several other lenses and two DSLR's (all Pentax) that I could use instead. Sure there are some things a DSLR does better but not much and if you've never had one you won't miss any of that anyway.

tuco, clearly you are much more knowledgeable than I am about developers and scanning and such. I used to have a darkroom but gave it up in the late 1970's because I enjoyed taking pictures more than playing with chemicals in the dark. I've been shooting Tri-X since the 1960's and all I can say is that generally when I underexpose a bit I like the results better. I used to shoot a fair amount of Plus-X and Panatonic-X too and I always liked them best at box speed. I've had several friends over the years come to the same conclusions. One guy habitually shot his Tri-X at 200 ASA and then developed it to spec for 400 in Microdol. Anyway, the next time I shoot Gold 200 I will take titrisol's advice and underexpose it a bit to see if it helps.

Well of course not. It depends on the composition and what you're trying to accomplish but it's a good rule of thumb. You have to get to know your film's characteristics. Some have more or less latitude. Some yield better results with a little underexposure, some with a little over and some work best right on.

Ah, that's why faces seem washed out sometimes. I had the same problem with Tri-X until I started underexposing by 1/2 stop. Thanks!

These are all good ideas but lets get real. We're never ever going to find a single camera with everything we want or need. I have a dozen and there are still things I want that none of them have. The K-01 is what it is and it's a beautiful thing.

Okay, it's a bit funky looking and whoever located the Green Button had no idea what it was supposed to be used for but for less than half the price of a K-30 I got a MILC with a state of the art APS-C sensor that takes great pictures through any lens I own and it works equally well on manual or auto. I love it! Who needs a K-02 when you have a K-01?

I like the K-1000. It's built like a tank. In a pinch you can use is for self defense. I bought two Vivitar K-mount bodies and a Promaster K-mount body (used) all of which are completely manual cameras like the K-1000 but smaller & lighter. They all work great with my Pentax lenses and I didn't pay more than $30 for any of them. They are of course plastic and won't last forever but that's why I bought three of them (for under $100). I also bought a Pentax ZX-30 with a 28-80 zoom lens for $40. This camera has all the bells & whistles including AF but works great on manual too. You just can't shoot with manual lenses on this one. Anyway, my point is there are some great deals out there for Pentax film shooters.

I guess if I had to pick a favorite film it would be Kodak Portra (160 or 400) for color and Tri-X for B&W but I have a stash of Kodak Gold 200 and just put up a post on my blog about my recent experiences with it.

I Still Shoot Film Too (Also)

Gold 200 is not a bad film at all. I like it but it is 20th century film and I think it's better suited for "wet prints" than scanning and today's dry prints. Portra was designed with scanning in mind and better suited for the way we do things these days - unless of course you're doing your own "wet work."
