Amazon killed Dpreview

this is both surprising and sad news . I've been on the Pentax forum there for a really long time (seldom posted , but I read a lot).
it is really unfortunate because of all the shared knowledge and communities built there which will disappear.
this is even more sad as a Pentax user, since there are few active Pentax communities to begin with.

Night Lunar eclipse

Some photos from the lunar eclipse. the eclipse was very impressive, and I was lucky as we had intermittent cloud cover which cleared up later.
The bright dot below the moon in some shots is Mars.

Modest setup used: K30 + 55-300 + 1.4 pentax-A manual TC.

Abstract Which one? + Critique

my 2c:
very good images.
of the two options proposed the horizontal image seems better balanced to me (tree on the left counter balances the couple on the right).
the vertical image also has a lot of out of focus background which IMHO can distract a bit from the subject (the couple). maybe if it was cropped a lot tighter it would be better. also for some reason in this photo the woman's pose looks less comfortable.
the horizontal image is the clear choice.

my 2c:
great shot. exposure processing, posing, colors, subject and background all look great.
my only input is that there is too much out of focus fence on the right side (and bottom of the photo) and this distracts from the subject a little IMHO. I would crop some of it.

my 2c,
nice image.
critiques:
image is rather soft almost like an oil painting (I guess this is intentional, but is a bit much for my taste).
also the top part of the sky is boring and can be cropped.

Anyone else miss it....?

I went from the K10d to the K30.
I never missed the top LCD because I don't shoot from a tripod much, and I usually check the setting though the viewfinder or back LCD.
For me it was a reasonable compromise, and I don't miss it much at all.

Photo Editing Software

I've recently been looking at the sub-photoshop priced editors as well. I have paint shop pro and photo Impact. both are fine and not too expensive (can be bought online for ~60$ during the occasional sales on the Corel website ), however there is a difference:
while paint shop pro has a more refined/polished interface, Photo impact seems more powerful and has some functionality not found in other editors (e.g. rule of thirds and golden mean cropping tools).
Even though I bought the software only recently and haven't had a chance to really dive into all the functionality , of the two I'd recommend PhotoImpact.

focusingscreen.com screen - a short review

I recently got my K3 screen from focusingscreens.com.
I installed it yesterday, and so far it looks great, but I'm waiting for a real chance to go out and play with it. focus seems fine with the lenses I've tested so far, will do more focus charts etc... when I get a chance.

thanks for the recommendations.

DA 55-300 or Tamron 75-300?

I don't have either lens so I can't comment on their specifics ( I have the sigma 70-300 APO). I think either lens will probably serve you well (and to get any significant improvement in quality you will have to pay a lot more), however if you shoot sports take into consideration what people say about focusing speed. A faster focusing lens may make your life a lot easier.

for image quality comparisons you are fortunate that they both have a review on photozone on the k10d:

I've managed to use 2 different cheap universal remotes, they are a little more bulky than the pentax one, but what the hell. (note get the ones with the different codes for the different devices) one of the codes that works is one coresponding to a sony cd player.

sorry about the wierd links, these were the best online pictures i could find at short notice.

this one:

and this one (not as good):

I've managed to do this with a cheap universal wireless remote (the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the button), it works but is inconvenient for long exposures.

Poll: How many lenses do you own?

whoa, I just did a count, and it turns out I have 10 lenses, I squeeze into the 6-10 category. This is really far too much considering my skill level :)
I my defense I will say that all of them except the kit lens were bought used, and some of the duplicate focal lengths will be sold (as soon as I figure out which one I like better :)

prime:
Pentax SMC-M 28/3.5
Ricoh Rikenon XR 28/2.8
Pentax M50/1.7
Pentax F50/1.7
Pentax SMC-M 135/3.5
Tamron Adaptall1 135/2.8

zoom:
Pentax DA18-55 (I)
Pentax DA16-45
Pentax F35-70
Sigma 70-300 APO macro

I mostly use the 16-45, 70-300 and 50 and 135 primes (but this changes all the time).

note that if you have the built in wide angle diffuser deployed the flash will "get stuck" in 13mm mode, this is the specified behavior according to the manual, to leave this mode simply retract the wide angle diffuser. a clue here is that 13mm mode is only available when in the wide angle diffuser is deployed, otherwise the widest angle covered is 16mm.

Hi,

I'm Nir, from Israel.
I've been reading this forum for a while, and today I finally made the jump into the DSLR world by buying the K10D. The local importer of Pentax (who also imports Canon), was kind of lax in marketing Pentax over here until recently, fortunately they seemed to have received a kick from pentax, and are finally moving their asses (including a rather tempting introductory offer on the K10d, which made me take the plunge)
so far I'm just learning to use the camera.

I'd post the customary picture of a cat but I don't have one, so bear with me on this (and also presumable on some of the newby questions...) :)

have a pleasant weekend,

Nir
