Am I first!?
Yes... I have one. I visited Yodobashi camera here in Sendai and picked up a black one. First impressions are as you would assume: well built, classy and LIGHT. I must admit that the focusing is not super fast and it does seem to hunt. Please understand that this is on a K5IIs and in very dim indoor light. If I get time, I will post a few quick shots vs the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 in the daylight tomorrow. It really is a great size, especially when compared to the Sigma 18-35mm which I played with on a D7100. That lens is big, heavy and draws far too much attention. Anyways, I will get some shots up as soon as I can.

What the heck!? I though Japan was supposed to be the first getting everything! :mad:
Hopefully I can pick up a copy tomorrow as the sites still say the 6th is the release date. Oh well, enjoy your lens!

How do you like it? I like the simplicity of it and the ability to take IR shots. It seems to be a very interesting camera, but it is hard to find any good information on it. I have been wanting to play with it at one of the local camera stores, but it seems like there is always someone already checking it out. I am interested to hear what you think of it in comparison to the K5!

Sorry, Petey, I can't really help you out here. That sure doesn't seem very cold for a K5. My K5IIs is frequently in conditions far below that and for long periods of time without any problems. I would be nervous that this is not dependent on temp and it may start at other times. I hope you can get this figured out and I am curious to see what is wrong. Good luck!

It is possibly the best I have seen. The subject, the composition, the branch with the leafy background... it all works together to make this honestly feel like a painting. The branch and the way the light hits it plus the bird's head are the best points to me. Again, really nice piece and you have made me want to try this a little!

Nicely done, eaglem! To be honest, I am not a fan of the posterization or other such alterings of photographs 90 something percent of the time. But, this is quite intriguing; very smooth and it has a very pleasing flow to it. I rather like it! Thanks!!

I have never personally used any of the DP series Sigma cameras other than inside of a shop for a minute or two, but I hear they can take superb photographs if you are willing to take your time with one and learn to live with their quirks (flaws?). I think Sigma is an extraordinarily interesting company and I enjoy their approach to cameras such as this. I have sometimes thought of getting a DP2, but never pull the trigger. If you get one, I would be very curious to see some images and hear what you think of it. The samples you have posted seem to reinforce the point that these are no mere point and shoot. Very impressive photographs. The photography world is changing and it is exciting. Thanks for posting this!

Trust me; water can and probably will get inside of a camera body through the lens mount if exposed to rain or moisture for more than a very short amount of time. I used an old Nikon film camera in a the rain for a while once, not really concerned about what would happen to it since it was pretty destroyed anyways. Good thing I did not care much as you could see the water sitting in the bottom of the body at the end of the day. It can easily ruin a camera. Especially a digital one.

Sorry, I did not notice the lens list before:o! Of the lenses listed I would not go without the 31 and the 50-135. Those are both excellent and the WR benefit of the DA* would be comforting. It would be nice to have something a little wider than 20mm, but if you do not have anything else I would suggest that go along as well.

The K01 is a great camera and I think it would be great for the type of photography you mention. I am sure you will love it and I hope you find uses or homes for your other cameras. I will be waiting to see your post next week on your purchasing of a 645d!:lol:

I would take the K5 as it is not really a heavy camera and you will be ready for whatever weather comes at you. I would probably be more concerned with wide angle and tele than normal focal lengths that way you can capture the expansive feel of being on the mountain as well as isolate certain features you find interesting.
As for what to study, I would say try to find out what the trail is like and what side of the mountain it is on. Then try to find when you will be at about what position on the mountain and try to judge where the sun and light will be. Look at photos of the actual mountain and try to visualize the sun hitting those spots and mentally prepare your shots. I have never been there, so I cannot give any personal experience. No matter what, I am sure you will have a great time and I hope we get to see some of your photographs of the trip. Good luck and have fun!

I think that is something that many people who have tried cameras such as the K5 and K5IIs have came to discover. These really are amazing cameras. I myself left a Nikon D700 (awesome camera) and a D3s for Pentax after using a K5 and becoming addicted to it's feel and lenses. That being said, they are different and I only chose to switch because I did not need the benefits of the said Nikons often enough to continue lugging them around while enjoying them less. If I were an action or wildlife photographer, I probably would not have switched. Sometimes I strongly miss my D700 as it was one of the best cameras I have ever used. I still come into instances in which I must rent a D4 because I simply cannot expect the same fast and dead-lock autofocusing or amazing low-light performance from my K5IIs. They are just different cameras. The Pentax cameras are much more enjoyable to use, however, and for 90 something percent of my work, they are perfect. I do miss the depth of field benefits, but hopefully that will soon be remedied;). For now, if I know I will be needing super shallow depth of field, I can rent a 645d for about the same as the D4.
Basically, I understand what the gentleman in the video means, but there are definitely times when a 5D series, 1D series, D800 or D4 is much more beneficial. It is good to see Pentax getting acknowledged for their great performance though. And, if Pentax does make the elusive FF DSLR and upgrade the 645d, I hope they can start inflicting some damage to Canon and Nikon professional sales!
