Some sample photos. All at f/5.6 on the K-1ii with the camera basically resting on the ground for stability. This is the second version of the lens, purchased October 2023, with the smaller front element, not the recalled V1. It also appears to have had some improvements over the first batch of V2 lenses that went out to reviewers, the interior does not look to be as reflective as what I saw when researching it before buying.

The adjustments made in post (with DxO Photolab) on these are as follows:
  • Unsharp mask - intensity ~180, radius ~2

  • Smart lighting - lower than the preset

  • Prime noise reduction

  • Microcontrast slider at 10

  • Highlights pulled back to cut some reflections on the bug

More concern about straps - misplaced worry or legit concern?

With respect, I'd be much more worried about all my cameras hanging in a vulnerable location on a single hook (that could fail), where they could knock against each other as in your second photo.
Also I never use a strap, I find they snag on things too easily and yank it out of my grip. But then I am clumsy ;(.
Have you had a strap fail?
Perhaps a poll on the matter would be enlightening?

You should give some serious thought to the DA 20-40 Limited. I find it excellent for walking around purposes. Prior to my acquisition of the 20-40, I would be carrying a prime for walkabouts; either a 24mm, 28mm or 35mm, so it suits me well. It depends on how you see things and what you want to shoot, and how much weight you're willing to carry. I don't particularly care much for zooms, but for the DA Limited, I'll make an exception.

edit: I wholeheartedly endorse your choice of the K-5; it's a wonderful camera. Great dynamic range, awesome image quality, not too many megapickels, outstanding value for the price. Still using mine.

I'll just answer, although I agree they have different uses and are not that easily compared.

For what it is worth::

77 -- 31 -- 43 on full frame
31 -- 77 -- 43 on APSC

I have a silver MIJ SMC 77 Ltd too. It’s my favorite lens by a mile. Don’t call it “Senor” though.

I was out shooting with that lens on a K-5 IIs one time here in Japan, when a middle aged man with a very high end Nikon (maybe D5) came over to me. He obviously didn’t speak much English at all. He just pointed at my lens and gruffly said “Legend” and then walked off. So since then, I’ve just called my lens “Legend” (in a gruff voice).

Anyway, enjoy the lens. It is great on APS-C. Try stopping down to different apertures to see how the rendering changes.

You poor, deluded soul. The 43 will already be taking its control of you, especially against the mighty 77 - I'm bowing with all due deference as I write this. It's pointless to fight it. There are many here who know how this will play out ...

So there's another survey suggesting that Pentax is no longer a particularly popular photo brand (with a fairly arbitrary demographic). Nothing wrong with posting it, and even of some interest. But you don't pick up a Pentax because you hope to become part of the in-crowd by doing so. You shoot Pentax because it compels you to take photographs. That's at least how I came to the brand and why I've stayed with it.

Note that you might have some difficulty doing this if your camera is a digital camera in the AUTO white balance mode since it will try to cancel out any overall cast. Be sure to switch to manual WB and use a fixed setting (whichever produces the tone you're after). Film cameras using slide film - used this quite a bit myself to get warmer tones as some daylight balanced films can have a colder "clammy" feel to them.

I got it for $20 dollars and it provided about $20 dollars of amusement. And I had never seen it listed in any accessory book, which leaves me wondering what other strange things might have been produced that were so specialized that they aren't documented.

I'm sure it was a trip of a lifetime and therefore well-documented. Obviously your battery and other gear performed admirably.
But when I think of having to pore over 5000 digital images I am again reminded how thankful I am to remain a film photographer.

Pentax Slide Copier for DSLR in B&H Used Dept.

Hi y'all, thanks for each of your persistent updates. You've given me things to think about in the rare chance that I couldn't find an economic solution with the native Pentax gear.

Fortunately, I think I've landed on a setup that will be very fruitful.

Less words, more photos. Hopefully that tells the story a little better.

So the image below is what the setup looked like at my last post. This is a K-1ii with a D-FA 50 macro mounted, then 49mm-to-PK reverse, then the slide copier directly mounted.
I'm using a shabby cut-up from product packaging white stock card with a scaled 36mm x 24mm pencil rectangle where I think the image circle is going to be.

TONS of empty space. If we crop this to the boundaries of the pencil marks, this puts us on the order of a 9MP RAW scan.

This is where I was at my last post.
My Pentax auto extension tube set arrived in the mail this afternoon.

This is a zero-crop export of the following setup: K-1ii, D-FA 100 macro, 49mm-to-PK reversal ring, Auto Extensions 2 & 3 in tandem (19mm + 26mm), then the slide copier.
It'll be about a 30MP RAW scan, and comfortably within minimum focus distance of the D-FA 100.

This is a similar zero-crop export of the same setup, swapping Auto Extension 1 for Auto Extension 2 (12mm + 26mm).
This crops down to a 34MP RAW scan, and is very close to the minimum focus distance of the D-FA 100.

I'm pretty happy with the theoretical setup with both combinations of extension tubes. It'll probably take me putzing through a few scans before I really fine tune if the tighter crop is too tight or takes too much fiddling with the individual slides.

Either way, this Pentax Deal should be marked as a huge success.
I'm going to keep tinkering with this, particularly after I have some slides to copy, then I'll drop a full write-up of the setup and my illumination apparatus in the appropriate Product Review section.

My Preferred Backpack Isn't a Backpack

It looks to me that there isn't a perfect solution. In the end, the decision for a specific solution depends on your preference or focus reason.... dirt/protection/carry-on/....

Mine is a backpack with sideloader/sling type capability. Fit for a camera with three some lenses (depending on size/use) and ease to use (grab the camera and shoot). Rainproof.
Brand: unknown, bought in photo shop, 10+ years old. Looks new (well maybe I should say: a little dust inside not affecting functionality...)

But I admit I grew fond of backpacks over time: I use them for daily work (laptop), for business travel (laptop & others), for private travel (anything up to a week), for photography, .... I feel it offers me the flexibility to walk anywhere with anything where wheels won't work.

One reason is that I traveled to many countries where trolleys on wheels were useless (no paved footpaths, nature trails etc...) and backpacks proved easy,
another is the relief for my back when carrying medium to heavy luggage ... everything asymmetric (one hand carrying) hurts after some time. Even my 3-4 kg photography feels heavy after a day citytripping.

So my preferred solution isn’t one but many backpacks....

I have a FA* 85/1.4 and I cannot believe how lucky I am. I often fiddle with it just because for the pleasure of it. That lense is a monster, so this explains my love for the FA*, I wish I could get a whole collection of them some day.
About the Limiteds: I wouldn't want to bit off more than i can chew(or should I say Pay), but of course they are my ultimate goal, especially the made in Japan ones. the point is they are quite expensive form me nowadays.

Interesting point of view about backpacks. I guess it’s possible to adapt a Pelican case to wear as a backpack. That way, you could carry three loads of gear to site in one trip!

What a cracker of a lens. I only shoot APS-C and have no need for FF but I think I might stump up for this just to have the complete set of Limiteds!
