Shooting Hot AIr Baloons - Canberra Baloon Festival

Hi Rortiz, I live in Canberra and used to crew for a mate who flew ballons, but haven't attend this festival since about 2001. Back then there were only 'glows' by a few key ballons, and by others only if the conditions were perfect. Organisers were more focused on getting them all up and away safely given the tight spaces and amount of public around.

If I can add to Mike L's comments, you would be better off driving to ANZAC parade carpark, by heading East from the launch field and over Kings Ave bridge. This places you on the correct side of Parks Way to access the carpark. Scope it first though as they sometimes close it for the Canberra week activities.

The Regatta point area would be a good vantage spot also, either continue along Parkes Way and left back up onto Commonwealth Ave and turn into the access road just before crossing Commonwealth Ave bridge heading south. If you want to go directly there from the launch, head west from the field, right at the National Library, pass under C'Wealth bridge on the loop road, then over the bridge north. There is an access road on your left 100m after the bridge. This area is also a good location as the baloons will likely drift in this direction.

The general flght paths in my experience have been most commonly N/W, or S/W.

N/W takes them over C'Wealth Ave, over or the the city side of Black Mountain, ending up in Belconnen near the Canberra Staduim or Kaleen. There are a few good landing choices here for them.

S/W takes them West of Parliment House and ending up around the sports fields of Deakin near the Mint building.

They rarely drift East, and if it is still they dance around the lake area between Regatta Point and the National Museum.

If you end up following them for some distance, be aware there will be a few others doing this and all the crew Suport vehicles as well. Keep your eye on these guys as they will pull over where ever they can to re-assess their route. All this happens at the start of the morning traffic, which isn't heavy in comparison to Sydney, though you will be on 80K/h + arterial roads, and the local punters will be rubber necking as well.

In all it's a sight worth seeing, hope you get what you want and enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the welcome.

I don't usually buy much on the net, so when there were no deals in town on Pentax, I found a great deal
at e-global. Can't believe it was in Hong Kong Wednesday afternoon and in my hands Friday.

Hi all,

Like many others here with many excuses like work, kids and life getting in the way and the rapid demise of film processors, I put down the cameras several years back. Family pics went on with an assortment of small digitals, including a nice little Panasonic DMC-TZ15, but they just didn't cut it.
Recently the kids were were gripping about the same lack lustre shots with their point and shoots, so I dragged out the old K1000 and SFx-N to show them what an SLR is, and explain what can be done with them.
This got the old juices going, and convinced SWMBO that we need a Dslr. Well it's my birthday this wednesday and the DHL consignment tracking says my new K-30 is in the couriers van today. Can't wait for Wednesday!
Thanks to those whom I have pestered with questions already.

Thanks for all the quick replies. The widest I have is the 35-105, so I f pick up the 18-55 kit I will be covered for now. It's only a $63 premium over the body only on the deal I've found.

F lens for K-30

Hi there all, just joined up and this is my first post. I haven't posted in the introduction as yet as I need some quick advise. I have done a fair bit of research the last couple of days, around the net and in this forum, on what camera will suit me, and lens options. Being a pentax film slr owner, K100- and SFx-N, I have an F and a range of manual K mount lenses, so my choice of DSLR's will be Pentax given the compatibility of these lenses.
I want to buy a K-30 but I'm currently a bit tight on the budget. I can only spring for the basic kit; K-30 with 18-55 DA L, but not a better lens just yet.

My question is, am I better off buying body only and using my SMC Pentax F 35-105 F4-5.6, over the kit DA L mentioned above and upgrading to a WR or other later? Is there any reason the 'F' lens won't suit the K-30?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave.
