K200D here (first digital Pentax). I did get a firmware update on it. I find I use the "little red dot" focusing cue a lot -- and do wish it were a rangefinder split-image focus.
I think I can follow these instructions with whatever variation the K200D needs -- but if there's anything you can spell out exactly peculiar to the K200D I'd appreciate it.
135mm Takumar screwmount is the manual lens I'll use this way most often, and an 18mm occasionally.

I got a genuine Pentax adapter from Adorama yesterday -- it was on back order, originally placed the order in February.
They emailed me three or four times asking me if I wanted to cancel the order. I waited them out.
If anyone has clear directions for using the screwmount lenses on the K200D Pentax
or a pointer, I'd much appreciate it. I've gone through all of them I think, but nobody's specific to the K200D yet.
The camera is new to me, and I am not sure how to interpret the instructions posted for various other Pentax digital cameras.
The buttons and the menus and the firmware are different.

could someone spell out the procedure for the K200D body with screwmount lenses?
Adorama finally shipped my three-months-long-backordered Pentax adapter ring yesterday (patience is rewarded)
I've never had a digital camera body before; long time with purely manual no-electronics cameras.
So I find this multiple-different-buttons, with different labels or names in different Pentax models, very confusing as an aging beginner.

Still looking (yes, I've been looking for the genuine Pentax -- precautionary principle)

> a genuine Pentax adapter can be had
Pointer welcome. Don't all rush in at once, I'm looking for one too.
Pentax Webstore via email insists that Pentax USA still sells them but only via 800 number. Pentax USA 800 number guy says no, they don't sell anything directly, would I be interested in a third party product. I said nope. Then he said Pentax Philippines gets a few every few months and releases them to Adorama, B'n'H, KEH, and "some little stores you've never heard of" but then he said he'd checked and they're backordered; he says keep phoning around.
EDIT April 16th -- I'm still looking

What's the 'famous SDM' issue? New-to-me K200D, learning which of my grab bag of lenses from old manual KX will do some things automatically
Two lenses with "A" option for aperture:
-- a "Pentax F-Zoom 28-80 f3.5-4.5" (all white letters, the 'better' variety per reviews posted here) seems like it should autofocus but doesn't.
I feel some bumping and grinding underneath the focus ring when it tries. Sounds a bit like the problem described here -- fixable?
-- a "SMC Pentax F 1:4-5.6 35-80" does autofocus
I've been going through the database info, curious if the 28-80 should autofocus on the K200D or not.
EDIT -- after rereading the earlier posts I tried 'encouraging' the 28-80 lens to focus automatically, and it clearly does when helped a bit -- it's apparently much stiffer internally somewhere. So I (blush) tried both lenses off the camera using a very small screwdriver in the driver opening on the lens mount -- and can confirm the 28-80 is just very stiff -- it does turn when driven by hand.
(I notice old reviews of the 28-80 'white lettering' say its zoom is very stiff-- and this one definitely is. Guess focusing maybe is also)
By comparison the 35-80 turns very smoothly and easily.
So the K200D body's driving whatsit is just camming out of the slot in 28-80 lens that won't turn easily, which makes good sense.
(Never noticed this stuff obviously when using the lenses on the manual KX).
Any thoughts or pointers welcome -- if it's a known problem, or there's a known description, I want to at least be able to explain the problem if I give the lens to someone else. It's a cheap lens, so I wouldn't mind trying to fix it I suppose.

> The match needle exposure system is in my opinion unparalleled when it comes to simplicity and ease of use.
No kidding. I'm amazed this isn't simulated in the digital viewfinder -- what else are computers for?!
I'd have thought someone could emulate a split-image focusing aid by picking data from two points on the sensor, for that matter.
Obviously still stumbling with the K200D, after my first day.
I pulled out my Leica IIIf for the old comfortable feeling of taking pictures without being confused.
I gather one gets past this point.

Thanks for the above discussion, very helpfull
Similar situation here, I'm another new-to-digital guy here (just got a K200D),
starting by using my old Pentax K-X lenses:
Pentax-F Zoom 28-80, the first day -- and I find it's obvious I need a lens hood to fit that, as the above discussion makes very clear. I gather there's no way to close down the aperture when it's mounted on the K200D.
Tomorrow the Pentax-M Macro 1:4 50mm and the Miranda (Pentax mount) 35-70mm macro.
Lots to learn

Has anyone drawn pictures of this? box-and-tree-and-arrow "from here, your choices are ... and it shows what each choice does ... and can it be undone, or not ..."
pictures. siiimple pictures, for the textually challenged. I'll get it eventually, if I read it enough times and go through it on the camera. But -- in words -- it _can seem confusing.
Puzzling through with a newly acquired K200D, my old manual KX, and a handful of lenses.
I'll ask a result I've wondered about, and whether the green button can be helpful to make this work.
Just as a known object I've photographed since my first camera:
Capture the nearly-full-moon with each of my old lenses.
Started doing that last night, able to get our Moon's recognizable features clear enough so far.
(I know the Moon is a subject that's fullly illuminated in bright sunlight :-)
I only have pre-digital lenses: Pentax F-Zoom 1:3.5-1:4.5, 28-80 on now, set in AutoPict and missing the rangefinder split-image rather badly in the first few days.
So there's a way to zoom to check focus somehow that can be tied to the green button?

Can you revisit the adapter issue? The Pentax web store no longer sells the adapter, that link is dead.
The third party one you link (in the original main post) and recommend as good is the one sold at BH --- and looking there, it has comments saying it lacks a 'removal key' and will require carrying a screwdriver to get it back out of the K-mount. Is this just lack of explanation, or is there a better alternative these days?

I bought a used K200D, basically all I can afford or want to risk at this point, copied all the info about using old K-mount and screwmount lenses, so will see how that feels. Far more good ideas coming along here -- and yeah, I'd love a new Leica, but don't see that happening. Glad to get the many comments about keeping the film camera working as well, that's my inclination.

Is it this one? Or was there a more expensive model?
EDIT -- oops, tried to post a link to the description I found -- the link didn't show up.
But it was wrong anyhow
I googled and got a description that did not include OptiBrite so I was looking at the wrong thing. Sorry

I didn't even think of that, thanks. I expect two hands and eight fingers -- I was thinking I'll still be manually setting exposure and focusing -- I'm used to stop-down-to-meter, open-up-to-focus -- and I'll be doing that on whatever body I get.
I've read up on how-to(s) for the kinds of lenses I have
(screw mount in K-adapter, K manual, and one KA lens, at the moment)
and I find descriptions of how they're used on variousPentax DSLRs.
But it's a bit hard to imagine how it'll feel. Much appreciate the thoughts.

Thanks all, I'd already sent back the one with the stuck diopter lever
Would-be-seller said when he bought the camera he'd set it and never touched it again.
And that he hadn't checked that part before mailing it
(the lever is well down inside a slot, within the top of the rubber eyecup).
The info y'all have posted above is more than I've found anywhere else about the
diopter lever, how it works, and how complicated to fix. I'm glad I wasn't optimistic about taking the chance.

Looking for comments from folks long familiar with the KX film camera, which I've used along with a Leica IIIf since I was, well, younger --- as I'm starting to wonder what digital Pentax will feel comparable. I've read everything I can find, but would like to know from people who know the old camera what new ones feel similar.

Question on the K200D diopter slide, several mention 'clicks' -- should it click?
(I'm looking at one for sale, looks perfect except that diopter slide doesn't slide -- and I don't know whether that's fatal or fixable or how it ought to work. (It moves a bit between center and left of center position, not at all to the right of center, and definitely no clicks)
