Well, I definitely got more advice than I bargained for!
To clarify, my wife said (repeatedly!) if it's not right she'd prefer to return the lens and get something different rather than waste money on something that won't get much use. She loves using the camera as much as I do (albeit on full auto mode, but she still takes better shots than I do) and I think we'd both genuinely enjoy using a prime as a change from the current zoom. And trust me, I've bought her one or two presents over the years that I've had to send back for something more preferable...why waste the money?!? It was a first wedding anniversary/birthday present although we've been together 12 years, trust me when I say she didn't do too badly when it came to gifts yesterday.
Anyway, the upshot is we're going to return the lens and I'm going to add some birthday money and get the Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro. I know we'll both love it :)

I know, I'm a lucky guy and I'm really grateful for receiving such a great gift :)
The Pentax-DA 35mm F2.4 AL is looking good at a similar price range from what I can find.

...the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro. It's great and I'm really pleased. I do actually already own the Pentax 18-135mm WR lens and I'm not really sure I'd need both. Not to sound ungrateful, if we returned the Sigma are there any other lens within that price range anyone here can recommend? I'd love a prime of some sort.

Thanks for the responses. Most have my shots so far have been in pretty dreary weather so maybe that's playing a part? How would I adjust or calibrate my lens to make sure it's sharp?

I'm new to RAW files and processing them in Lightroom, in fact I'm new to DSLR photography in general so apologies beforehand if I sound dumb.
I've only shot in RAW since I've had my K-30. I've found I have to use a lot of sharpening to bring out the details in my photos, in the sense that I'm maxing out the sharpen slider in Lightroom. This obviously has the undesired side effect of increasing noise in my photos. Do RAW files from the K-30 generally need a lot of sharpening?
