With gear this old it could be anything as noted above. I've had my MX and winder combo for over 30 years now. I've not used it often of late but as I noted in my review of the winder the cap which holds the batteries in place has to be one of the worst designs ever. From new it was difficult to get in place and things did not get better over time. If not properly fitted it is possible to get the sporadic results you describe. I don't recall if it was mentioned above but new batteries might clear up the problem. :D If the mechanical connection is not the problem and the contacts are not corroded it might be time to send it in for a CLA.
Even if it is not operational I would be without the winder on the MX. It just feels wrong without it.
Good luck

Outstanding Albert,
It must have been quite a thrill to see mother and cubs at such close range.
The old M 400/5.6 performed very well for you. I'll have to unpack mine and take it out for a spin.

Very nice Jer. As I recall from a geology course I took many years ago, these guys used to swim about in the ancient Cambrian seas
Speaking of swimming I hope you are keeping your head above water in Texas.

Super.
Too bad we have lost the sort of skill and craftsmanship displayed here.
With so much bad architecture and boring buildings, especially here in Canada, it's nice to see something more visually interesting for a change.
Very fine.

Agreed Jer.
Love the shape but not the colour. These beauties should be British racing green or red.

Nice one Jer.
The warm weather has brought out a number of old MGs, Triumph Spitfires and a couple of E-type jags in my neighborhood. There was a nice little Lotus which I rather liked.

I'm following this thread with interest. As you can see from my signature I have a bag full of old Pentax glass. Not as many as Monochrome but quite a few. Anything special in my collection beyond the K 200/2.5?
I'm counting on you guys to work through the bugs for me.
I'm planning to get a K1 early next year and can't wait to see how the K 200/2.5 performs among others.
With landfills overflowing Pentax should be applauded for keeping their legacy glass viable.
It is the main reason I stayed with Pentax instead of jumping to Canon or Nikon when I went digital.

Great shot.
I didn't think there were any Mosquitos left flying.
I thought the termites finished them off ages ago.
