My understanding is that every digital camera has numerous dead pixels. They are mapped out as part of the manufacturing/assembly process, so you never know about them. As time goes on, more will die, requiring eventual remapping or some form of post-processing correction.
I don't know how many dead pixels the manufacturers allow to be mapped out in production before the sensor is considered a "dud", but I expect the number is surprisingly high.

There's the problem right there. To get me to make the jump to MF digital (I shoot film now...I use Mamiya RB67 system) would require modern lenses with electronic leaf shutters syncing to 1/1600 or so. If I'm going to be stuck with mechanical shutters and manual focus....well, I already have that.

Does Pentax have a leaf shutter lens in the 150mm (ish) range? I'm doing a little poking around, and I don't see anything.
I hope there is such a thing. That would make the 645z very attractive to me. As it is, with a flash sync speed of only 1/125s with the focal plane shutter, its a no go.

No.
I've got 16x20 prints on my wall I took with my 6MP Nikon D70, and they look fine.
When you consider all the things that go into making a compelling and interesting photograph, pixels are about 824th on that list.
Which is to say that a slightly grainy image of something spectacular is a better photograph than a pixel-perfect, razor sharp, six-foot-wide print of something boring.

That's an interesting review, but from where I'm coming from, a few things were missing.
I'm interested in MF digital like the 645D solely for studio work. As such, high ISO performance doesn't matter to me. I'd shoot at ISO 25 if required...its just a question of throwing enough light on the subject. I suppose there are folks out there contemplating a 645D for wedding (and therefore reception, and therefore low-light) work, and for them its different. But I'm doing studio portraits, where ISO range is not a factor.
I'm mainly interested in seeing shots that show the texture and tonal range that the sensor produces on skin tones.

I've only glanced at the gallery, but what I saw was the product of a true expert. Gekas has a brilliant eye for lighting and has some exceptional post-processing techniques...not to mention a model who is cute as a bug and a great concept re-creating the feel of those old Dutch paintings. And even though I don't know him, his work speaks of an artist who is very patient and methodical and deliberate. He obviously (or at least seemingly) really thinks through his photographs before hand and carefully plans out how to achieve the image he sees in his mind.
So, yes, you could create that look on any camera. Or at least most of it. I'd attribute very little of the "wow" factor to the camera.

I'm playing around with the idea of switching to medium format.
I've been looking at the Hasselblad H4D-40, but its awfully pricey. Decent used ones, if you can find them, are still north of $10k.
I started out years ago on a Pentax K-1000, so I've always had a soft spot for the brand. When I saw the 645D, I thought maybe that was worth looking in to.
I'm interested in the 645D for portrait work. Any portrait photographers here using one? I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Very cool! Well done!
Its a very geometrical composition. As such, the only nits I see are that the camera POV is slightly to the left of the centerline of her torso. I'd line it up precisely along that line. And her hands are not posed symmetrically.

That's a super-compelling image! It makes me think "what the heck is that guy doing?!?!?" Are there people around? Is this some sort of group thing? Or does he go out and do this by himself? The frozen ladder makes me think this is a well-planned activity. I wonder what the necklace he is wearing says. I wonder how far away his clothes and shoes are.
On something like this, I see more of a "photo-journalistic" shot than anything else. I think its wonderful.
So, who is this guy and what's the story?

Cool shot.
The only thing that comes to mind is that I wish it were framed a bit differently. I'd rather see all of the flag at the top, and less of the tower at the bottom.

Greetings from Omaha. That's where I live, so that's the name I chose!
Anyway, I'm here to learn more about the 645D. I've been shooting Nikon for some time, but am intrigued by the 645. I shoot mainly portrait stuff, and am looking at stepping up in order to "stand out from the pack" a bit more.
