That's a good point about looking out for another damaged one, I'll do that. I have been able to glue the broken bits and it is working again but I don't think it will hold for long. I've no idea how it was damaged. I'm not the most careful person with my kit but it was in a padded bag cell in a padded bag but I guess I must have knocked it somehow. It certainly looks to me as it it had some force applied to it. Up until I stripped it down I would have said it was a fault but now I think it must have been knocked.

Yes they do, so do some others like SRS, which is who I normally order all my kit through, but this one came from Amazon. I think it also may have just been recently that these pro shops started offering this.

I think in North America you maybe get more of a warranty than us. In the UK we get a 12 month warranty, so it is out of warranty.

yes, you are no doubt correct, unfortunately I never took a shot from above which would have shown how flimsy two of the breaks are... ---------- Post added 03-13-18 at 05:15 PM ----------
no idea, it was like that when I took it out of my bag so I must have either dropped my bag and not realised or hit it against something

All my lenses so far have been Sigma, I buy them on a combination of cost, quality and most importantly they have the lenses I want. Anyway 14 months ago I bought my first Pentax Lens, the HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE.
I found it really quite good in use but then it broke a couple of weeks ago. Difficult to describe the fault, but the lens was bent. Where it had broken in the middle and there was about 3mm of movement in this bend. It wasn't worth sending away for reapir so I stripped it down and found the cheapest looking plastic mounting bracket had broken inside. The attached photos shows 3 points where it had broken. When I see how thin and fragile the plastic is I wonder that it didn't break sooner.
This really makes me wonder why I would ever buy another Pentax lens, I couldn't believe the cheap plastic quality of this bracket. Anyway the main reason for posting was that if anyone else has the same problem I can help you if you want to strip it down. I've glued the broken bits together and it's working again, but doubt it will hold long. Now going to buy the Sigma 18-300 instead.

I understand you have asked about a remote control.... but just in case you have not tried any of the composite and interval modes, they are well worth a look, I do a lot of long exposure work and I no longer use a remote control, I just a mixture from these modes, they cover anything I need to do, Sorry if you already know this.

Why does it have an AF/MF switch, do all pentax cameras not have this switch on the body? If so why is it duplicated on the lens?

I went through a similar process to you recently. I kept on searching for something in the 70-200 arena, but eventually came to the conclusion they were too big and heavy for what I wanted, so last week I bought a Pentax 55-300, which I got for a steal of £250 on Amazon uk.

I think your expectations for the lens might be too high. I have three copies of this lens. One broke after it ended up in the sea, so I bought another two to replace it. The second I use for 90% of my shots. The third sits on a shelf waiting for the day that something bad happens to no.2. I love this lens and every time I take it off and try a different lens I go back to it after a few shots, I think I'm just addicted to the uwa feel of the shots. They aren't sharp at the edges and they do suffer quite bad CA at the edges, depending on the aperture, but I'm happy to accept that because I love the shots I get.

another great use is... Let's say you are at some famous iconic monument and there are loads of people milling about... Set the camera to the correct exposure but take a large number of shots using the average method again.... I'm finding around 40-50 works not bad, but you can easily increase it, set it not to save the process shots and hey presto, as long as the people are moving about they will be averaged out of the shot and you'll be left with just a shot of the monument.

I'm still experimenting but I feel the possibilities are endless. I'll try and give some examples.
Using an ND filter if you want, or not, but for this examples using an ND filter to give an exposure of f8 and 30 sec then just set the composite mode to average and the standby interval to minimum and then decide how long an exposure you want. For example last night I did this for an eight minute exposure so I set it to take sixteen shots... Which gives me an eight minute exposure with the advantage of image averaging to smooth out the noise... Awesome... I'll try and give another example later but I'm rushing out to Edisto beach just now to try some more techniques.

I was kind of concerned about the problems with intervalometers too having accidentally/deliberately bought a ks2 and finding out too late that you couldn't use a remote with it. The silver lining was that it finally led me to understand the built in composite modes and now I don't feel I will ever need an external remote again. Have you looked at these modes? I now have the k70 and love the interval composite modes for LE work.

Hi Barry, thanks for the reply, don't get me wrong, I love the articulating screen, I use the one on my KS2 all the time and I wouldn't go back to a camera without one, but all of the things you describe can be done with the one on the KS2 exactly the same, I cannot see any advantage as one commentor said to having it in the optical axis.
I'm about to buy a K70 which has the previous style of screen, the same as the KS2, which appears to be contrary to what another poster said about "Pentax emphasizes that the screen stays in the optical path when extended".

I thought rather than a quick reply I'd ponder on this for a while but my imagination has yet to find any scenario in which I feel that this would be beneficial...

I did sign up to it some time ago but have refrained from using it because I really don't want to use a service that doesn't facilitate uploading directly from lightroom, as I track everything I can through lightroom. I've tried asking the authors a few times if this is something they plan but they refuse to engage on this question.

thank you for that, I have been wondering about this for years and couldn't understand why it had never appeared on any camera and right across all brands 30 secs seemed to be the standard max

I use a K-S2 and the articulating screen is enormously useful, I really would not want to buy one without it ever again. However that said, the screen on the K1 is one of many reasons I won't be buying it. I don't understand why they didn't go with the same kind of screen as the K-S2., where you can if you need to, view it from the front, and you can also turn it inwards to protect the screen when closed.
