Oh yea, I hail from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada. That's just 10 minutes from Niagara Falls, and an hour from Toronto, on the shore of Lake Ontario. It's a nice spot. If you ever visit the area, let me know!!

Thanks for the focusing tip Adam! That'll definitely help with my many pictures out in the snow tomorrow, lol. Cheers!

Hello!

Before last year, I rarely took a photo. In my younger days, I spent a year working and travelling in the UK and Europe and shot two rolls of film the whole time. Not much of a shooter, lol. Fast forward to just over a year ago when I bought an iPhone and got onto instagram. Scoff if you will, but doing daily challenges with a simple camera really turned me onto photography. That and sharing and seeing other's visions of the same themes really spurred me on to learn more and shoot something everyday.

I ended up shooting our sailing races every week through the Summer. Even though the camera was kind of limited (iPhone), Each week there would be one or two photos that turned out well enough to print as an 8x10. I was just doing that as a lark really. Just testing to see if it was possible to get a decent pic off of this phone. What happened next showed me the power of photography. I gave the first 8x10 to one of the sailors on the second week of the racing season. Besides the free beer which was great, I realized that no one ever has a photo of themselves on their own boat. It was a well appreciated gift to an old friend and a gift to myself because it struck home how important photography can be. For the rest of the season, everyone was happy to let me take photos and I had many requests for pics! So, every week I would hand out another 8x10. The lessons are that you should share what you shoot, and if it's important to people they are going to want to see it!

Since then I've been given a DSLR (unfortunately not a Pentax), which I've enjoyed shooting. Today though, I picked up a Pentax Spotmatic and a K1000. I'll pick up some film tomorrow and replace the batteries. I can't wait to start shooting with these cameras! Ultimately, I'd love to have a shiny new K5 snapping away out on the lake! Gotta love a waterproof camera. Right now, I want the simplicity of shooting with film..... no menus or crazy options that take away from composing the shot. I'll get to that later, as needed.

So, that's where I'm at and as a longtime lurker, thank you for all the great information so far! Now if I could just figure out what that little circle in the middle of the veiw finder is for, lol. How do you focus a manual lens anyway?
