Autofocus isn't great on the k-x, but then I mostly use MF anyway, so that wasn't a huge hangup for me.

One major issue I had was the lack of a remote port and the inability to use an intervalometer. That is fixed two ways with the K5, as it has a built in intervalometer and a port to use an external one.

Another major issue was the batteries. I often shoot in the dark, and changing the damn AA's on a tripod in the dark is damn near impossible. Rechargeable AA's are expensive, awkward, and slow to charge. The battery on the K5 is great and easy to change. Spares can be found on eBay for very reasonable prices.

The number and placement of external controls is much, much better on the K5. The things you find yourself scrambling to do will fall quickly to hand with the vastly improved ergonomics.

The build quality is also far superior. The K-X feels much more toy-like in comparison.

The K-X is a good entry level camera, and takes excellent photos. The K5 however, improves on it in every way. Given the cost to buy a used, or even new K5, I think an upgrade is a very good choice.

I recently switched from a K-X to a K5. It was absolutely wonderful and definitely worth the cost. All of the little details about the k-x that bothered me are addressed in the K5. In terms of handling, durability, controls, and image quality, it really does an excellent job. In comparison to the canon 5d and 6d (own by my friends), I'd say you really are getting a lot for your money. When you factor in all of the excellent legacy glass available for very inexpensive prices, the K5 is a very, very good option.

Given the price of the k5 currently, and the fact that the differences are fairly minor between it and the upgraded version, I think you'd be in good shape saving your money for better glass.
