My choice would be the Pentax 16-85!

The Sigma 17-50 is quite underated as well. I have one and i like it a lot.

Well at least the K-3 is tough enough to survive being thrown over a bridge...

Are you using Face Detect in Live View? The live view face detect uses multiple focus points and an algorithm, so it may not always focus on the eyes.

Did you try setting a specific focus point? If you select a specific focus point and put it right on the eyes the camera should work perfectly.

Hey Dan, so let me get this straight...

You are semi retired, live in the most beautiful place in the world, and probably have lots of opportunity to take photos from a helicopter.

Awesome, sounds like a dream buddy!

Shooting the Vegas Strip - any tips?

I was in Vegas with my K-r in the winter of this year. There were quite a few people with cameras and a few with tripods. Saw a guy with one of those mini tripods and he was setting it up creatively on walls and other structures. I stuck with hand held shooting on the strip because i had a beer in my hand so couldn't easily carry a tripod.

The good news with the K-r and K-30 is that high iso noise is quite low, so dont be afraid to use high iso settings.

I shoot everything in raw and put all my pics through dxo software. The high iso shots do get softened up, but any high iso noise gets cleaned up nicely.
