Thank you for directing to that. He makes a great point when he says on that page: "The essence of my work changes dramatically between what I recall later during a retouching process and what I perceive right there, on the spot."

A teacher wanted a group photo of her students. I kept shooting when one of them got the giggles, which became contagious. I gave the teacher all of the photos and let her decide which one she like best. Guess which one the teacher posted to social media?

Pentax K-3 III 1.3x Crop

Rather than shoot video, I would like to try and make a slideshow of a sequence of sports images. Crop mode would save me from having to crop images of action at the other end of the field. The situation comes up in so many ways. Let's say I'm shooting near home plate and the ball is hit to deep center field, or there is a corner kick at the other end of the soccer field. If I could quickly switch to crop mode and fire off a 2-second burst, it would save me the time of having to crop 24 images in post. If I know I'm going to crop anyway, that would save me some time. I'm often shooting 500 to 1,000 images at a sporting event. All the time saved in cropping images adds up.

Maybe I could customize one of the user modes with this setting. This is why Pentax is so great. They offer options and customizability in so many ways. Sure, most people will never use it for their type of photography, but Pentax is designing cameras that offer solutions to problems I didn't know I had.

I'm excited watching these videos. When I step back and look at the big picture, Pentax is doing really well right now. Look at the promising PLM lenses. My PLM 55-300mm was great, and for only $400, it is a real bargain. I got the 50-135mm lens for $900. If Pentax can sell an updated 50-135mm with PLM for $900, that would also be a steal because the only thing I didn't like about that lens is that it hunted a lot.

A K-3iii, 11-18mm, 16-50mm, 50-135mm and 55-300mm is a great kit for APS-C, and that's without even talking about Limited lenses.

Pentax needs more Ambassadors like the gentlemen mentioned earlier to show what is capable with the Pentax lineup. Yes, even Pentax marketing is starting to do well.

My experience with the A6000 was almost identical to yours, although mine overheated and shut down taking stills in the summer, something I never worried about with my Pentax. I fought to take pictures with my A6000, but my Pentax was always my partner in the process.

Yes, consumers balance every +/- when making choices from among so many alternatives from so many companies. This is sort of the crux of the complaints in speculative threads like this in which cameras on the horizon are discussed. The complaints are veiled wishlists in which consumers don't want to make tradeoffs or have anything "balance out," as you said, but rather they want everything.
Camera company: Do you want a small camera or do you want a camera with a flippy screen? Consumer: Both.

Notice there aren't as many complaints in threads about cameras that have already come out because by then wishlists are irrelevant. Complaints are supplanted by Monday morning quarterbacks who will say the camera flopped because it didn't have things on their now discarded wishlist.

The longer Wakashiro-san talks about the camera without mentioning "godlike AF" the more I wonder if it's improved very much at all. He's written three Product Stories and hasn't mentioned AF yet. Instead we've heard about a bigger viewfinder and how it protrudes 3.2 millimeters to keep the photographer’s nose from coming in contact with an LCD monitor, which automatically dims because it has an eye sensor that detects when you look through the viewfinder.

People have complained about Pentax AF for years, but I don't recall complaints about how their nose contacts the LCD or how that camera needs an eye sensor to dim the viewfinder.

I will give Wakashiro-san credit for writing about one thing that no one ever talks about: "All PENTAX SLR cameras also provide a selection of Custom Image modes to provide the fine adjustment of various parameters, making it possible for users to create images with the desired finishing touch right there at the shooting location." If they omitted a flippy screen so they can have a larger LCD and bigger processor to make it possible to have better AF and do even more Custom Image processing, then OK. I will look on the bright side and say at least I got a new joystick.

Wakashiro wrote, "This was a decision based on our goal of allowing the photographer to confirm the image’s quality and composition on a larger screen at the shooting location ... ."
How big is the LCD screen compared to previous models?

For me, it's only terrible marketing.
You need flippy screen? Buy another camera, which may be one offered by another brand.

Why do people pigeonhole all sports photographers? I'm a photojournalist who definitely does use a flippy screen when I shoot sports, and I want an articulating screen. Part of the reason I'll take my Sony instead of the K-3 to a game is because its flippy screen comes in handy so often. Similarly to the choice I make, the consumer looking to buy a camera will often choose the camera with more creative options.

At its root, the discussion about the flippy screen (or touch screen, joystick, pop-up flash, or anything else you want to substitute) isn't about the technology, it's about options.

I tested the Sony A6400 at a go-kart track before I bought it. That $899 camera was tracking drivers' faces and sometimes eyeballs around the track at approximately 20 mph. The keeper rate was well over 60%, probably 90%.

And the kicker is I would still switch back to Pentax if the keeper rate approached 90% for people running slower. The Pentax is so much better to use in practice than the Sony. IMO, they're talking about Sony when they wrote this:

4. We pursue a level of quality and performance that can’t be measured by numbers alone.
We produce our cameras not only by pursuing higher performance based on numerical values, but by integrating our designers’ sensory feedback into the design and development.

I'm a photojournalist. With the K-new, I'm hoping to switch back to Pentax for 100% of my photos instead of using the Sony for sports. There are so many advantages to using Pentax that I just need the K-new to approach the autofocus capability of other systems to make it worthwhile to go back.

I look at focus points and frames per second and buffer capacity as sort of like the megapixel race that took place years ago. It started at 6mp and now it seems to have leveled off at 24mp. There is a similar diminishing return on sports/action related specs. How many autofocus points do I need? Do I really need 20 fps? 8K?
This is sort of what I take from the 5 Principles of Pentax video that talked about things "that can't be measured by numbers alone."

I'm sure these two professional newspaper photographers would have liked to have a movable screen of some kind while shooting wrestling. Meanwhile I shot sitting down with my Sony A6400 near the mat with the screen flipped up.

The point about features is that they give the photographer options. You can use a touch screen or the four-way controller, the flippy screen or the viewfinder, the pop-up flash or an external flash, the list goes on.

Some people are defending the camera design by saying, "I don't use an articulating screen." The point is that's your choice. Nothing is taken away from photographers if they never use a flippy screen. Addition of a flippy screen is an extra choice given to users who have different shooting styles.

Ricoh should revisit K01

+1 to buying one to show the appreciation.
I've always loved the images I get from my two K-01s, the Panda and the Bumblebee. Plus I like the way it looks. It's the only camera I've ever "collected."

---------- Post added 06-13-20 at 10:04 PM ----------

When the K-01 came out, it was about $800. I see the A7II and Canon RP selling discounted for about $900 right now. If Ricoh put out an $800 K-02 as the cheapest FF MILC on the market, I would go for that. Plus K-mount lenses for a K-02 would be so much cheaper than the Sony and Canon R alternatives.

Ditto. My 50-135 hunted a lot.
I'm a photojournalist and shoot sports with a K-3 and have a K-S2 for a second camera just in case, which means I have two battery sizes in my bag and two different chargers on my desk. When I'm not shooting sports, I will leave the K-S2 in the office and take the K-01 because it shares the same battery as the K-3. I would go with a K-1/K-3 combo.
