They could turn it into a DA* 50-150 f2.8, where it would line up perfectly with the 150-450, and I don't think anyone's feelings would be hurt :)

No, the K-01 is a big chunk of aluminum heat sink, designed to absorb the effects of continual live view, and a full-size battery to keep all the lights on. Internally, the K-30 was a regular DSLR, with a skinny battery for when it wasn't being run on AAs.
I do not see these as benefits. They lead to extreme ray angles at the edge of the image field, which lowers the IQ and has to be camouflaged by the software. Digital sensors really need retrofocus wide angle lenses for good raw edge IQ, and they may as well sit on a K mount at 45.46 mm from the sensor.
Pentax knew what they were doing when they engineered the K-01. And the high-price, "designer" approach to the initial marketing is very close to what Ricoh is now doing with the brand.

I attended an event with Pentax staff last year where we borrowed a K-1 II and an 43 Ltd and went on a photo walk (using AW + JPG). Then we came back to an event space and they did a workshop on using the custom images for in-camera RAW development. During this, they explained the thinking behind the Custom Image settings. I also attended a talk years ago with the engineer that made the Custom Image settings in the first place. They really don't expect you to use them as-is and want users to take control.
- The profiles are set to quite strong by default, and that is on purpose to show the nature of each setting clearly.
- Pentax has provided a lot of parameter adjustments for the profiles, and if you look, they are not all the same parameters.
- They recommend using the Custom Image profiles as a starting point and to use the parameters to make them look the way you want.
I don't have a K-1 series camera of my own, so I'm not sure what parameter adjustments are available for the Gold profile. I imagine there is a way to tone it down in camera.
I think Fujifilm's approach is quite different. They are making these settings as pretty much complete emulations of old films. Not having used a Fujifilm camera for a long time, I don't know how their simulations work. Do they have a similar amount of parameter adjustments and RAW development features in their cameras to Pentax?
(I realize that many people will have the opinion that the way to take control is with third party software on a computer. But there are a lot of people who don't want to do that for a number of reasons. One big one is they don't want to own a computer at all. These settings are for them - well I should say "us" because I'm usually one of them)

Good morning all, it's another hot day here, so I've taken all my clothes off and opened every window.
I feel so much better, although the other people on the bus don't seem so pleased.
What else has been happening? Well, my cousin says he recently bought 51% of a vampire hunting company.
Yes, he's the main stake holder.
This week I want to talk about User Modes on Pentax cameras. I think if you've ever been stung by changing a setting - even accidentally - and forgetting about it the next time you take a picture, it can be handy to save how you want your camera to start up to User Mode 1, so you can always go back to it wherever experimentation takes you. It can be horrible to miss out on a shot because something was set for another photo or a dial got moved putting it in your bag or whatever. For example, having electronic shutter on disables flash. Or you limited how high the ISO could go, but now you need a fast shutter speed.
I don't currently use modes, I feel I can cope, but I can fully understand anyone wanting to reduce stress on location by reverting almost instantly to known settings when something's wrong, or somebody who shoots a scenario so frequently they might as well save themselves 'dialling in' time before they take their first picture.
My K-S2 only has two User Modes, I set one for normal, one for action. You can see in the pic below that the K-3 III has five modes, and AFAIK it actually has ten, just five selectable with that dial - U1, U2, U3, and so on, with another five from its menu. [Edit: Confirmed by our brother, Rgknief60, who says: 'Beginning with the last firmware update, the K33 has ten "boxes."
They hold user mode settings. What is significant is that these boxes can be named and saved to your SDXC card. Pentax is the first to do this (to my admitted limited knowlege).
The menu item under BOX Export/Import states: "Exports the settings rgistered in the BOX to the card or imports them from the card."
This is invaluable when a camera needs to be reset. The K33 is the only body I've regularly reset due to accidental frustrating fumble fingered changes I don't know how to undo. Now I see a way out.
It should be possible for us to easily share settings now, though I've not seen this done."
Many of your camera's individual settings can be chosen, then head to Save User Mode in the menus to assign them. You might have a mode for Landscapes that turns on 2 second delay, one for action as I did that goes to Tv and single point AF, a Pixel Shift mode, an Astro mode, a studio portrait mode or whatever.
To finish with, there's the story of the elderly man with serious hearing problems for some years before a doctor fitted him with a set of 100 percent effective aids.
At the checkup one month later, the doctor said: "Reg, your hearing is perfect. Your family must be pleased for you."
Reginald replied: "Oh, I haven't told them yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times."

One of the best uses of User Modes is for birds in flight. Even if you don't use it often, when do you need it, the time saved can be crucial. With the K-3iii for BIF I currently use AF-C, Auto Zone select (the only situation in which I use this option), AF hold medium, AF point tracking type 3 (a new option added in firmware v.2.0 - see Kobie's recent test), Tv mode set to 1/1250th (1/1600th might be better), AF capped at 6400. This is an area where users often find improvements, so it's worth following the postings, keep an open mind and be willing to tweak.

Fangs for the jokes Ian :)
I use USER modes on my K1 II like some of the above posters for moving subjects.... wildlife, cars, or my dogs. My preference is for TAv for the exposure. Being able to instantly switch to the mode with all the AF-C settings is very useful. The next mode I have set up is identical except it is AF-S. Lets say the subject I have been tracking in the first USER mode with AF-C, now stops still and I want to take a picture using focus-and-recompose. Just one click of the dial takes me into AF-S and I can accomplish that easily without having to fiddle with AF settings or turn off the AF on the lens or camera.
One thing worth mentioning is to get used to your cameras general settings and do any AF fine adjustments (if needed) before you start setting up USER modes. It will save a lot of head scratching later on.

Wow, that’s nearly identical to my mode for BIF, and yes it is very useful and has allowed some shots that would have been missed!

Couldn't this be a last sentence before giving it a rest. To be truely honest, I am not so much interested in a single persons repeated POV in a thread about something he will not get, as he said over and over again. On many levels obviously.

Seems a pointless test, no? He's focussing on a screen, not on a person. Practically everything in the viewfinder is at the same distance. The real test is not following eyes on a 2D picture, but on a 3D person, whereby not just up and down movement is at play but also movement along the Z-axis. This probably gives an idea, but I don't think it is sufficiently representative?

Is it necessary to make fun of members opinions? I fail to see the wisdom in mocking members. It's not cool. I'm sure you didn't intend any malice, but it doesn't come across that way. Let's just respect one another's opinions without descending into mockery. Thanks. Graham

I have cameras that offer this functionality and I use it from time to time. It does add a layer of complexity to the shooting situation though - take out phone, launch app, establish connection - along with also managing phone battery life. This use case is fine for when the camera is on a tripod and you are taking some time with a shot, not so much in fast moving situations or simple snapshots.

The Thetas are dual mirrorless, but if that worries you, you can call them Ricoh's.
Neither the K-01 nor the Q system could be accused of being me-too products!

I don't think it has anything to do with the mount. If Pentax wanted to make a mirrorless full frame with the k mount that was the size of the KP it'd be a big success. I just think Ricoh needs to not bother with the APSC mirrorless market.
Imo, just handling some of the mirrorless competition the smaller register distance is a compromise on ergonomics.

With yesterday being Remembrance Day, I spent some time looking at family photos from the early 20th Century (as I'm sure many did). Leaving aside the matter of B&W vs Colour, I'd say that my great-grandparents were taking photos a hundred years ago that were technically at least as good as, and often better than, the ones that most of family are taking today with their smartphones.
And of course that's because every frame that my great-grandparents shot cost them money, and they weren't particularly well-off people, so taking a photo was an event and they made a real effort to do it well. The main reason why most of the smartphone photos that people take today are so bad isn't the fault of the phone technology itself, but because they take so many photos so casually that they just don't make any effort at it. Presumably people who invest in a "proper" digital camera are more likely to make a bit more effort, resulting in hopefully better photos.
One thing's for sure, I think that my great-grandfather's hundred-year-old folding camera loaded with a high quality modern film could still give any smartphone and many DSLRs a pretty good run for its money in the right hands.

Patronizing one or two photographers to do photography tutorial youtube channels with Pentax equipment would go a long way....
...so would being able to actually hold their cameras in local camera stores. I'd never have gotten into Pentax if they hadn't had the MZ-6 in my local Henry's all those years ago...

On the OVF vs. EVF topic...until you use an EVF you won't understand how handy it is. As I said before, Sony has a function called "DMF" which is short for Direct Manual Focusing.
What this does is make focusing, and punching in and magnifying the image extraordinarily easy. With the settings dialed in, you can just touch the focus ring and...bam...you have instant zoom in the focus...along with viewfinder focus peaking, histograms, levels and a bunch of other things...things a OVF can't do.
On an OVF/Pentax, you have to go to live view - probably on a tripod - hit the OK button and punch in and magnify the focus and take your eye away from the OVF.
DMF is a game changer and one of the things I love about EVFs.
Because the viewfinder is electronic, you can do some things that an OVF can't do that have a direct impact on your workflow.
I love OVFs, but there are some things that can't be done without electronic views. Those EVF things tend to really offset my love for the OVF since they impact what I am taking pictures of.
If folks argue the OVF vs. EVF from a purist's view, without really understand what can be enhanced or better, are really not understanding how the tools are used.
