Anyone still using a K100D?

Have an IST D, K-20 & a KR. I use the IST D for around the house , The k-20 for work along with the KR. I'm still learning the KR. In a real critical case I opt back to the IST & K-20 as I had dark exposures on a scene one day which I never had before. Love my stabilized Pentax's. Tried Canon but came back home.

I have been to 2 CSI schools here in Texas & so far I am the only pentax user. The teacher is a Canon lover and did acknowlede that my Pentax was just as good as his canon or the nikons in class, just different but would preform well. During the class I discovered the auto bracketing mode & showed him, his answer" was neat wish I had that". At my other schools I have not seen any Pentax's there. I did spot one the other day at a senior prom picture session at a local courthouse. So even if we are a minority I don't care ( with film I was an Olympus fan).

Manfrotto Ball Head MH057M0-RC4 057 anyone have this one ?

Don't have this Manfrotto head but do own 2 others. The pistol grip head is great & it has adjustable tension. My tripod is one of the best I've ever seen. I'm sure this one will live up tp Manfrotto's reputation.

Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror lens for a Kr ??

Just went to amazon.com and looked it up, it was 47th St Photo that sells these lens along with a T-mount adapter for specific cameras. It's like mounting a telescope to your camera with an adapter. They sell for fairly cheap. I use one to mount my 80 mm Orion Telescope for photos ( still learning to focus it and adjusting settings).

I bought a similar lens a couple of years ago and the firm sold adapters to fit any popular camera. When I get home I will look & see if I can find who it was, maybe 47th St Photo or Adorama. I've used it for wildlife pictures on my ISTD and it worked pretty good. I also was given one from a friend that fits a minolta film camera, haven't figured out what to do with it yet.

filters

I use a clear filter as a lens protector. I get into some situations where i'm having to climb or other things and have banged the lens breaking the filter instead of the lens. If you are never going to be accidently banging your camera you don't need the filter. I use clored filters in my work to photograph certain processes or light sources ( IR, UV, Blue,Green, & chemicals) I have 5 different color filters for use and I buy the right size for each lens ,52 for my 18-55 & 55 for my macro. Hoya is a good brand.

I was having trouble shooting the inside of an 18 wheeler truck rim. Ended up using my popup flash as fill & it worked. Guess I really should have gone to full manual mode which is what I like to to do but tat day I was rushed trying to take as many photos before things were moved ( crime scene where suspect was injured and being treated). Have been trying different things during the day in varying light conditions just getting used to the camera.

I have used the Pentax 18-135 while on vacation to take group photo's & to bring in details of writing on building in Egypt. It worked very ell on my K200. I hve been using it on my KR as well & have had good luck with it. I have the Tamaron 200 lens and it is not as useful as I first thought as it is not powerful enough for my needs when tele is needed.

I just purchased a KR for the liveview feature to replace my K200d. May have been a mistake as the KR gave me underexposed photos. I noticed this & switched back to my K200d. This was at a crime scene involving officer shooting. I will do alot of practiceing and adjusting to the KR before trusting it as I've trusted the K-22d & ISTD. Probably won't give up the 200 til it absolutly quits.

Tried some more photos tonight.
1) F4 @3 sec
2) F4.5@ 6 sec
both at ISO400 and 50 mm focal lenght
Light was so low auto focus would not work set at infinty.
I would be happy with these as distant shots of a crime scene. if markers or object were spread out it would be different.

Best Tripod for Pentaxk-r

Red Rock hit it on the nail with his advice. I love my ball grip head from Manfrotto, had a cheap one onmce and hated it as it would slip. Got to play with a Manfrotto someone had and loved it. I have to use my 055 for work as I put the center collum all the way out and to the side causing it to be a fulcrum thus the need for a heavy tripod.

Agree with you totalty on the exposure however I have been trained to go for depth of field in my job. I need to learn more of a balance between the two. My main focus of photo's will be used in court so they want everything in focus. I'm close to retirement and need to unlearn some of my practices. I'm wanting to photograph old courthouse in North Texas at night so I will be wanting better sharpness. Thanks for the advice.

Best Tripod for Pentaxk-r

Sydnysider, I have a manfrotto o55xprob tripod with a 322rc2 head. I started witha conventional pan head but ir did not meet my needs. The ball gripp has adjustable tension so if it gets loose you can tighten it up. This tripod stays in a vehicle all the time and has not shown any wear. They are expensive but it will be the last one I buy. It is heavy but solid as a rock.

Best Tripod for Pentaxk-r

I have serveral tripods that I use for different reasons. A litgher one when I have to carry it a long ways. For my time photo's I use a Manfrotto with a ball grip head, it was expensive but rock solid and will do the splits to get low if needed. A lightwieght one can shake or tremble with the wind and a cheap ball head will slip. On all tripods extend the neck or top last, next to last would be the smallest diameter legs, then the next bigger, always the biggest diameter first. Try different models if you can, In my area you can find used ones at pawn shops and craigslist(online personal ads)
Good luck

I haved used a wired remote with my IST & K200 and taken some really good photo's at night with no added light. You must use a tripod for these. If you can see to walk you may not need more than 30 seconds. Experiment & remmeber that kight is adivitive. I've found that digital is very forgiveing about going too long of exposure. I have not figured out how to post photo's yet or would do so.

I learned to shoot manual while a teenager. Was so excited to get an automatic setting camera later. In the past couple of years my job has required me to relearn manual again. I only use auto when taking casual photos, everything else is manual. A great book on manual shooting at night is "Advance Crime Scene Photgraphy" by Chris Duncan. Your photo's look good, The cookies made my blood sugar go up somehow.

Should I have AA batteries as backup?

KOne of the main reasons I originally bought a Pentax over Canon or Nikon as the IST used aa battiries and not rechargable. The sales person didn't know very much as both Canon & Nikon had battery adapters at the time and he failed to mention this. No wonder that chain has dissapeared in my part of the country; they had counter help not photgraphy people.. At crime scenes having a dead battery is not an option I wanted to explain in court. It was a decision in my K-200 and the KR. I may get a second battery holder. I use lithium batteries and have really good results, would say 3 to 4 times the copper tops. I also travel and have used local aa batteries and had real poor service from them. I will use the rechargable ION for normal use but will always want a consumer back-up in my bag.
