Where to find AF contacts

Does AF use the same kind of 'flat' contacts? I thouht those were 'rounded' pins.
Anyways, be extremely careful: if they've bent once, they'll be very prone to breking off. That's what happened to me: a couple of weeks after having seen a bent contact, it broke off...

DA*300mm/1.4x Converter vs. New 150-450mm

I had the chance to borrow the 150-450 and the TC1.4 and compare it to my 300mm.

Here is a screenshot at 1:1 of both, wide open:

With regard to sharpness, the DA* 300 mm + TC 1.4 seems to be a winner. But without the ability to zoom, of course.
I'd also like to compare the DA* 300 mm cropped at 1.4 vs the with TC1.4

Hope it helps!
Cheers

Some heads up regarding the repair.

I received the replacement part a couple of days ago. Big thanks to PM2S Belgium for their professional, quick and friendly communication and quick shipment. I had the piece shipped for €26,20 + €8,50 shipping = €34,70 = $38. A little pricy but I won't complain regarding the trouble it could've been I couldn't find someone to ship the pice. So thanks again! They shipped in in two zip bags and a padded envelope, total overkill but better that than the other way around!

I won't give the name of the French company who refused to give me anything else than a paid quotation, only after having seen my equipment. Like I was too stupid to understand what was going on. And their wild guess was: "It probably won't be under €150 ($165)" !

Replacing the piece is straightforward:
Unscrew the two little screws
Remove the old piece; its held quite tidily by the contacts, a flat screwdriver helps to pull it out
Replace with the new one. Be careful not to bend the new contacts as the fit is quite firm. It means the piece is difficult to insert, but also means the contact will be good and the piece won't go anywhere if the screws are loose.

Regarding the "diy" temporary repair, here are some more pictures:

The very good news is I've been able to remove and attach the lens a couple of times and the fix didn't move at all. It looks like the fix is not that flimsy as it looks! Good to know and I kept that part as a spare one! Only need a screwdriver and voilà!

Hi PDL, no I'm not in Tracking mode. I'm in "select" mode, if you must know. But it's NOT and AF issue, AF not doing ANYTHING because I'm not touching the AF button. With back button AF, it's full manual AF unless you touch the AF button.

Yes, the sensor is tracking the water, but NOT the AF. That's all the point

I was in manual focus --> back button AF 😉
CDAF in video is poor, by the way. I'd avoid it as much as possible in video, as you mentioned.

Ok, I've been thinking about a silly test: tryin to replicate this behavior ... at home. So here is what I did: found some video on youtube that might trigger the same behavior, get my setup as sturdily as possible and film the screen. The result is astonishing:

Here's the video i've been filming:

Dipper - Cinclus cinclus (gularis) - YouTube

Without SR, stable as it could be. Note I've intentionally left the progress bar to asses motion.

Youtu.be

With SR, jerky as I've encountered:

Youtu.be

My conclusion is: the camera IS using the image content for the SR an NOT the accelerometers.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies :)

Now I know it and will certainly do in the future. I don't shoot video very often and I don't care much about video features, but it's a "nice to have" for occasional use. Now I know :)

Good point. I was supposing the SR system analyzed the scene instead of using the gyroscopes (as for the mechanical SR). In this case, I was on a pretty sturdy tripod (Brelebach + Sirui billhead). Not the highest end carbon tripod, but good wooden tripod. The ballhead is also a "mid range", decent ballhead. With the lens well balanced on its collar, I don't think there was much motion at all. And I was sheltered from wind in a tent, also :)

For video, I trust you. But for stills, I've never turned it off and it has never been an issue. And I shoot quite a lot nightscapes and have had any trouble. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though, but I think this is more of a myth of the early days than reality.

Indeed, I was thinking something similar but regarding SR. I use back button AF, so no AF here.

Yes it is. If I remember well, it's the day before it broke. Or was it already broken and has it impacted the SR? Anyway, I use back button AF, so it shouldn't batter, right?

That's why I was thinking about a SR issue ;)

Ok, I have in fact other videos from those days. Some look "good" and some are also "jerky". But they were shot in the same conditions and with the same settings. So, granted, their cinematographic quality is open for debate, but some are "good" and some bad.

This one is stable, not much water in the scene:

Youtu.be

This one, on the other hand, is also jerky. Note the abundance of water in the scene:

Youtu.be

Less water and stable again:

Apparently not :-) Got this reply in a couple of days!

By the way, got the piece shipped for just under €35 (~ $38-40)! Lookin forward to receiving it! And il keep the old piece and see if I can "fix" it. Might come handy one day.

Like... ?

Neither of them! The branch was lying quietly in the water and the lens was sturdily mounted on a tripod. That's why I'm talking about a stabilization issue. I'm not talking about the limited cinematographic interest if this clip but about the image jumping around from left to right from one frame to another.

No, the old(er) models used mechanical sensor stabilisation but it was replaced by software stabilisation for noise issues. I don't remember exactly when was the tipping point, but I'm confident the K3 and later models use software stabilisation.

Thanks Fries 🙂 Couldn't check the shutters speed as it's not written into the exifs. But without ND filter, I couldn't do much anyways.
Stab was set to on, obviously. I always leave it on, even on tripod.

Hi folks,

I'm not used to filming a lot with my K3 as... it's really not pentax' greatest feature. But I thought I'd give it a shot with a tele lens: DA* 300 mm f/4. And I got this TERRIBLE jerky result:

Youtu.be

Any idea of what's going on? To my knowledge, the sensor stabilisation is off during video recording.

Cheers!

Hi folks!

Thanks for your replies, I didn't catch the notifications about this thread

So here is an update:

Regarding the workaround: I just wrapped some aluminum foil around the broken pin. So you have to remove it, do some awesome precision bending and twisting, but it's an easy fix. I wouldn't bet on a long lasting life, though. I plan to keep my lens on the body until I got the piece.
Indeed, it looks like a design flaw, I'll be more careful next time I switch my lens. I always handle my equipment like it's built like a tank! Luckily, it's a quick fix.

Regarding converting it to screwdriver AF: I heard it was possible but was on the field when it happened. Too bad it's not a backup function that can be enabled through the GUI. If that were the case, I'd have enabled it right away.

Regarding the piece: I was able to contact the only repair center from (apparently) Belgium, PM2S, and are very kindly (thanks to them) selling me the piece for about 35$ + shipping (€26,20 + VAT + shipping). So I guess it'll be a quick, less than $50 fix. I'm pretty happy knowing it could have been much more complicated, even though it's a little too expensive for such a small part
French Pentax Service center replied to me they weren't selling pieces. B@stards! I'll ask for a quote just to mess with them. I didn't contact service center from the Netherlands.

For the US: I got an email reply form US Camera, here it is:

So except the piece to be available around October 2019

Hi folks,

I broke the AF contacts of my 300 mm f/4.

I’ve made à temporary repair with aluminium foil and it’s working great but it won’t last forever.

The part number seems to be 48120-0M291 but I couldn’t find (m)any stores which sells the part. One in the US but out of order, ... and that’s it.

Any idea where I could go for parts, preferably in Europe, ideally Belgium or close by.

Just checked, K30 has 12 bit, k5 has 14 bit which might be important for image processing.

No, not AF. Signal to noise ratio ;-)

I had «*not much to lose*» ;) Worst case, it was about 190 euros for a couple of hours of fun. Not cheap, but I can could live with it.
I see the K30 does not require to unsolder, which is a great advantage. I don’t remember if it has 12 bit raws and how it behaves in low light. For astronomical pictures, this is very important (even though the K5 starts to show it’s age...).

If I had to do it again, i’d be more careful about sensor alignment and tilt. I’m very lucky to have none. Also, infinity focusing is lost on some lenses, which could be an issue.
Last but not least, in astrophotography, IR seems to smear out stars, so an IR blocker (beyond 656 nm, if my memory is correct) would greatly help.

No news. I stopped trying to figure out how to solve it when I found the K3 isn’t a good video camera. (Which is il, I’m not a good videographer 😛)

I use my phone or other compact devices to film as the quality is much better.

If you have a solution, I’d be happy to hear it, though, as a like my camera. (Even if the K3 is getting a pretty outdated model!)
