Upgrading from K-3ii to K-1

Congratulations,
I was in the same boat & with some forum members advice, very happy to have done so.. It really is a different experience.

I've been playing around over the weekend with some vintage lenses & it's a blast to use them on K1

the ones I really like are the m28 3.5 & the m85 2 and of course m50..
And I also have the F 24 50 f4. real good lens that I already appreciated on apsc

happy shooting

Found my economical priced K1 & it's on it's way
Chose to get original version in order to save some pennies for the, no doubt, investment in something like 21 or 50 DFA later down the road.. :-)

Looking for some opinions. Hoping some reflections can help my decision making. Maybe some people had to make similar decision.

I currently have a K3 (original) which still serves me very well.
I am looking to get a 2nd Dslr to go with it. The natural path would be a K3 III I guess. Pretty obvious.

But I am also lurking at the K1 II. I assume at some point there will be a K1 III but looking at prices of competition, I'd expect prices to go over 3k easily.
To me the K1 II looks like a good deal and towards yearend for sure, deals will come up. on both camera's.. But money is not the decision maker between the two.

The FF lenses I have: a slew of m lenses, some very nice ones..
FA31, DA300, F 24 50 F4 & DA70
the other ones are DA17 70, DA 15, DA 12 24, DA55 300

shooting mostly landscapes, cityscapes, travel, some portrait, some nature (incl the occasional wildlife), I just shoot a bit of everything..

by the way: I have a Z6 with nice kitlens & 85 1.8
Perfect camera! does not really make me warm ;-) prefer DSLR style but it has good video.. to be honest, also prefer the Pentax colors. Although in it's own, nothing wrong with the Nikon colors..
and the FA31 shines on it. but really, for some reason I don't take it out that much. It don't ring my bell like the K3 does & it does not feel balanced. Frontheavy..
feel free.. ;-)

tnx for opinions

I was in the store today. They only had the k3 iii in stock. I put my da17 70 & da70 on it and was honestly quite impressed with the cam as a whole. AF was quite snappy with the da17 70 compared to the K3.
Not surprising I guess. Viewfinder also very nice.
It seems a bit depending of how much of a trade off there is between the 26mp sensor and the 15mp remaining with my DA crop lenses.
Might be selling the Z6 and get both K3 / K1 :-). I see some lenses FF frame oriented that I know I'd like using. To begin dfa 21, as I love the 15 on apsc..

agreed ;-)

nice indeed
I have abused my original K3 silver for like a decade now.
You'll be glad to hear the silver keeps really well.. and I like it especially with m lenses as these have a silver line on the front..

unfortunate.
Sometimes one pops up on the UK pentax forum at reasonable price.

In meantime, we'll post some more pics..

Pentax K-1 Mark ii user, feeling frustrated about being stuck with only the kit lens

Reading the above, i think the OP deserves a break and some of his sentence does really reflect the pentax world. We don't know what the market situation in India is, we know financial resources are limited, we don't know if he is able to test some of the older lenses in that part of the world.

Buying a product/brand that you have not fiddled with extensively is always a plunge. And we all do that from time to time. No shame in that. I rather feel somewhat happy the poster took that plunge with pentax despite the probable easier presence of brands like nikon / canon or fuji in that area. Obviously something must have triggered him to prefer pentax over competitors. Rightfully imo. I still prefer a pentax body over others if only for the ergonomics.

To be honest, i am surprised with the question
maybe i am fortunate but never felt it being a problem with this lens. certainly not anything like my fa31

if any help, this link is a recent pic with it and guess this is what you'd call a rather risky shot. very contrasty with backlight.
this is what i got.. didn't really correct a lot.

i rarely use my mx for photos. I'm hooked to the iq coming from a dslr.
But this link shows where my mx comes in handy... really like it for something like this

this, i guess..

the da300 (combined or not with tc) is a very different experience from 55 300. It's simply a different league.
both can be used aside the other. if you can afford it, it is a highly recommended lens.. real pleasure both in use and IQ

Pull sharpness/contrast/saturation down a bit in whatever profile you wish to use.
Focus manually or AF before each shot.
Use a tripod or monopod.
Disable SR
If you want to do it correctly, use 24or30fps & your shutter at 1/50 and keep iso low. Outside this would probably require ND filters.. So you could just ignore & have the camera choose its settings..
Use the best lens you have.

As Adam mentioned, it will do the job. You can be your own judge regarding the quality.

I understand. Guess it's indeed always a personal decision what matters and what not.
I can imagine these are issues for certain users.
One strength vs d850 is that it does take my pentax m lenses ;-)

well, in light of recent developments, i'll wait a bit before spending money :-)

wifi connection would be a nice to have. Ofcourse, my niece is not you neighbour.. ;-)

Advice for new KP user: lenses

I understand you are looking for an improvement over the 18 55 wr but with a budget constraint.
Personally i can appreciate the 18 55 wr. You can take good solid shots with it. This said: in good light at optimal settings...

When looking at replacing the 18 55 (thus a walk about) i'd be looking at two options, both economical 2nd hand:
pentax da16 45 or da 17 70. I owned both. The 17 70 being more versatile because of the longer reach.
IQ wise, they are both very fine lenses, a true step beyond the 18 55. Do not expect really compact or fast AF..

If you're interested, you can find shots with da16 45 in my US gallery (smugmug below..) and some samples 17 70 in mexico and france gallery.

As others mentioned, there are a lot of options. Maybe tamron 17 50 2.8 is one of them.

Also mentioned by others: da 15. I also have it and really like it. Especially would be very nice in european cities. Da21 for a bit more conventional focal length. I do have the feeling you are looking more for a quality standard zoom in addition to your two primes.

16 85 would seem the best for you, but not sure whether this is within your budget. I don't own that lens, since i really like my da 17 70...

comes down to this i guess:

best of luck

i would go for things like composition and photography areas first rather than the technical aspects. I think the former is more appealing to novices. Ofcourse some things go hand in hand. You could explain the triangle with interesting examples that appeal to people.

just wanted to share some images made in mexico with the da17 70.
Actually quite a pleasing lens, with the nicest characteristic being the rendering, imo. It handles flare pretty well, but not in the league of da15.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert
It's nicely sharp but unlike fa31 or da12 24 for that matter.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert
looking at the focal lenghts i used on this trip, maybe i should have taken the da 12 24 with me.
But it's handy to have that flexibility to zoom further even if only occasionally.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert

The 16 85 is probably a good replacement for this lens, but i always find it hard to judge a lens if i have not used it myself..
just some thoughts..

did a trip to botswana last year with the da 55 300
this is what i got out of it..
you can find the focal length next to the pics.
Botswana - christophe gryspeert
imo pretty useful zoom. but it depends on what you really want to get out of it.
I kind of agree with a previous poster that the da300 & TC, thus 420 would have been nice on some occasions.
Mind you, one of the difficulties is the positioning of the truck vs wildlife. And the amount of time you have. definitely one body, one lens ratio. no time to swap lenses and it is dusty. If you go for 55 300. go WR version..

K3ii replacement

I don't understand the comment. The DFA are FF, no? So it means they are bigger & more expensive. One of the advantages of apsc is overall smaller size & cheaper. I know i can, but why would i put a bigger & more expensive FF lens on my k3 (or sequel)?

But i agree, they need to get some more dfa lenses out there. Right now, i still feel pentax being a mixed bag. Apsc body development being a bit behing because of the focus on FF & FF lenses being a bit behind because of resources (?..)
Not sure about this, feels like betting on two horses.

---------- Post added 11-16-18 at 12:30 PM ----------

Bit early to say nikon Z is not doing well imo.
When looking at fuji. I think they are doing well, not so much because they go mirrorless, but more because of the package they deliver. Small capable attractive bodies & suited lenses.. Mirrorless does allow them partially to go there. So i do agree on the last part.. but for a different reason.

Reading this, i assume you want to fill up the wide angle side.
To be honest, the 18 55 WR really is quite good.
Botswana - christophe gryspeert
In case you just want a wide angle..

It might be worth saving up indeed for a 2nd hand da 16-85 or 18-135 in the long run..
Not really weather resistant, but still though and cheap 2nd hand is the DA16-45.
I used to have a copy and it's a serious contender. Quite a step up in IQ vs kitlens.
Depends on how harsh your weather is.. :-)
