Congratulations,
I was in the same boat & with some forum members advice, very happy to have done so.. It really is a different experience.
I've been playing around over the weekend with some vintage lenses & it's a blast to use them on K1
the ones I really like are the m28 3.5 & the m85 2 and of course m50..
And I also have the F 24 50 f4. real good lens that I already appreciated on apsc
happy shooting

still on my list one day ;-)
I remember going from a k100d to k20d to K3. All pretty major steps.
Still good memories on the k20d though..

haha, thanks for confirmations.
Most of all, I hope it will trigger me to experiment and go out more again.. ;-) ---------- Post added 01-21-24 at 11:59 PM ----------
and yes, this is likely one that I will try to pick up 2ndhand as well. On my K3, I love the versatility of my da17 70.
This is similar I guess..

Found my economical priced K1 & it's on it's way
Chose to get original version in order to save some pennies for the, no doubt, investment in something like 21 or 50 DFA later down the road.. :-)

struggling with the same issue.
Yesterday was in the store checking the K3 III out. I found it to be very nice coming from the K3 I. But you already know that from your monochrome.
The difference between your & my question, lies in the lenses you have. Next to some FF lenses, I have some very nice APSC lenses that would merit the K3 iii
Seems you only have FF lenses, and actually the ones you have may not require that faster AF.
I don't think we need to think in terms of how old a cam is, this is not like in the early digital days anymore and waiting for K1 iii doesn't make sense to me.
I'd take a decision rather on the lenses u have and the ones you'd like to buy going forward.
Going into yearend, Pentax usually does some rebate action. At least where I live.
choices :-)

tnx for opinions
I was in the store today. They only had the k3 iii in stock. I put my da17 70 & da70 on it and was honestly quite impressed with the cam as a whole. AF was quite snappy with the da17 70 compared to the K3.
Not surprising I guess. Viewfinder also very nice.
It seems a bit depending of how much of a trade off there is between the 26mp sensor and the 15mp remaining with my DA crop lenses.
Might be selling the Z6 and get both K3 / K1 :-). I see some lenses FF frame oriented that I know I'd like using. To begin dfa 21, as I love the 15 on apsc..
agreed ;-)

haha, could have seen that coming -:). "need" would be said a lot, it's more as I gave my k20d away and want a 2nd DSLRs again to reduce lens changing on my walks & travels.
it's the below quote exactly that makes me consider the K1 at this stage
I have the feeling adding the K1 will bring me more since I don't see my K3 as outdated & I have a few good lenses to go with it already ..

Looking for some opinions. Hoping some reflections can help my decision making. Maybe some people had to make similar decision.
I currently have a K3 (original) which still serves me very well.
I am looking to get a 2nd Dslr to go with it. The natural path would be a K3 III I guess. Pretty obvious.
But I am also lurking at the K1 II. I assume at some point there will be a K1 III but looking at prices of competition, I'd expect prices to go over 3k easily.
To me the K1 II looks like a good deal and towards yearend for sure, deals will come up. on both camera's.. But money is not the decision maker between the two.
The FF lenses I have: a slew of m lenses, some very nice ones..
FA31, DA300, F 24 50 F4 & DA70
the other ones are DA17 70, DA 15, DA 12 24, DA55 300
shooting mostly landscapes, cityscapes, travel, some portrait, some nature (incl the occasional wildlife), I just shoot a bit of everything..
by the way: I have a Z6 with nice kitlens & 85 1.8
Perfect camera! does not really make me warm ;-) prefer DSLR style but it has good video.. to be honest, also prefer the Pentax colors. Although in it's own, nothing wrong with the Nikon colors..
and the FA31 shines on it. but really, for some reason I don't take it out that much. It don't ring my bell like the K3 does & it does not feel balanced. Frontheavy..
feel free.. ;-)

nice indeed
I have abused my original K3 silver for like a decade now.
You'll be glad to hear the silver keeps really well.. and I like it especially with m lenses as these have a silver line on the front..

I bought a Nikon z6 for that reason and put my Pentax m lenses on it with adapter. works like a charm but of course a more expensive solution..
for what it is worth, the k3 is really a tad better than k01 in my opinion. the k3 is more defined and loses less detail in wide scenery. With the right usage you can get decent results with it. Like you say: the loss of detail is the k01 biggest flaw
The software stabilisation is also a tad better than the k01 in is useful in wide-angle sceneries. less wobbling

Reading the above, i think the OP deserves a break and some of his sentence does really reflect the pentax world. We don't know what the market situation in India is, we know financial resources are limited, we don't know if he is able to test some of the older lenses in that part of the world.
Buying a product/brand that you have not fiddled with extensively is always a plunge. And we all do that from time to time. No shame in that. I rather feel somewhat happy the poster took that plunge with pentax despite the probable easier presence of brands like nikon / canon or fuji in that area. Obviously something must have triggered him to prefer pentax over competitors. Rightfully imo. I still prefer a pentax body over others if only for the ergonomics.

these are my favorite M lenses:
M28/3.5
M50/1.7
M85/2
M135/3.5
M75-150/4
choosing 3 would depend on the trip..
ps: all my filters are 52 and i use 49/52 step up rings where i need to..

reading all the previous answers,
i hope you got rid of this imo false buyers remorse..
I'd love to have a K1 with 'kitlens' to combine with legacy lenses i gathered over the years.
Some that really shine on my K3 are fa24-50, M28 3.5 ,M85 1.8 and M135 3.5...

I have both.
don't use them very much but they are both nice lenses.
the 3.5 striked me indeed as a bit sharper and especially a bit nicer rendering (on digital..).
on a 28mm, 2.8 vs 3.5 would be secondary for me.

will do tonight.
Yes, it has fringing. That is why i submitted this one. But in my opinion very little and easy to fix in a very tricky situation.
trees against backlight are also tricky.
One has to admit the rendering of this lens is awesome though. ---------- Post added 06-18-20 at 09:57 AM ----------
exactly my thinking. if it is not really striking at first sight, i can't be bothered with fringing.
On your 2nd point, well, i can understand the op going from three lenses to two when travelling..
the 12-24 range is ideal for that. the lens does really well on all sides of the range.
For travel, taking the 12 24, my 17 70 and my 55 300 is also too much. So i usually take 17 70, 55 300 or 12 24 and da55 300 and some prime in between that i end up not using..

To be honest, i am surprised with the question
maybe i am fortunate but never felt it being a problem with this lens. certainly not anything like my fa31
if any help, this link is a recent pic with it and guess this is what you'd call a rather risky shot. very contrasty with backlight.
this is what i got.. didn't really correct a lot. You'll Need a Newer Browser to See This Page |

i guess this list is according your budget no?
I had some of the pentax models, among which the k100d as first dslr
I remember i really liked the rendering of it. It was also pretty good in higher iso at the time and some of the images i made with the kitlens were tacksharp.
I was a nice combo..
I think the decisionmaker between something like k100d or k10d,
it's also about the size, the batteries, size viewfinder.. things mentioned already by other people.
I'd be inclined to get a k10d. I had the k20d. Absolutely loved that camera.
In todays world, if your intention(?) is to start cheaply in pentax world, i'd be on the lookout for something more recent.
In small size and low weight, the k r (which i still use today), hands down beats the k100d.
In larger size and weight, a k5 or k3.. ---------- Post added 06-12-20 at 01:23 PM ----------
It's just my thought:
but i think a lot of this "wonderful" has to do with the fact that is was the first digital slr experience for a lot of people.
Sentiment...
I think the technological advantages of getting something more recent, outweighs by far any 'possible' favorible sensor output from something like the k100d.
