It's completely irrelevant for the AF. The sensor and its pixels aren't part of the AF system unless you're using live view.

The exposure will be the same, but it won't cover much of the frame.

K-3 and low-light shooting

Or, as the wikipedia article highlights, an outdoors scene illuminated by a 'bright' Aurora borealis or Aurora australis.

Indoors -3 EV happens a lot when you are shooting live music in dim pubs or venues, for example. Being able to meter down into shadowy darkness, and get focus, will be extremely useful, especially as a lot of venues don't allow flash use.

It also means K-3 users won't have to use the annoying AF assist lamp to help us get focus. I hate the AF assist light, and always have it turned off.

Get the Tamron 28-75 (250) and the old AF-D 70-200 (500). You lose VR but you gain it back through the high ISO. FF lenses are very affordable if you know which ones to buy and dont demand perfect corners / VR

The Tamron and the old AF-D isn't the sharpest in the corner even at f/8, but I got my primes for that.

One would also like the Pentax heritage (philosophy?) to be recognized by any company who owns Pentax at the time. The K7/5/3 cameras seem to represent that heritage very well.

Tried P-TTL Off-Camera Flash For The First Time...

I was referring to the FEC setting on the camera, though. The one where the flash can be dialled down and stays at that setting even when the camera is switched off. So set and forget. Then you have a working P-TTL system without any need for constant adjustment.

My K-3 Hands On Thoughts
Hey Guys,

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to get to try-out a pre-production firmware K-3 at my local camera store (as well as getting a free seminar from Damien Demolder (from AP) - how cool is that?)

Its no DP-Review hands on preview(!), but I know not everyone is going to luck out and be able to get their hands on one before ordering, so I thought I'd share.

If you need ND's with the 8-16, buy large ND gels to hold in front of the lens. Because they are so thin, it is not critical to keep them parallel to the sensor. You can even use them to darken just part of the image.

Let's make our flash wishes known to Pentax

Glad to.

For starters most other manufacturers offer pro and enthusiast models with higher max sync speeds than any current Pentax DSLR. If you're unfamiliar with the advantages of a higher max sync speed, it allows you to balance flash with daylight more easily. My PZ-1p has a max sync of 1/250, so Pentax knows how to do it, but it's as if they figured 1/180th should be good enough for everyone. There are of course people who will downplay it's importance, but they're obviously not trying to shoot the things I'm shooting.

Next, the Canon system does this really neat trick, they have separated camera EV compensation from flash EV compensation. Camera EV comp controls the ambient light, and flash EV comp controls the flash exposure. It's so intuitive. With Pentax (and Nikon) the camera's EV comp affects the flash exposure as well. So if you have a properly exposed flash picture, but you want to darken the background a bit to emphasize your subject, on a Canon, you would just dial in -1 EV on the camera, and the background will get darker, but the subject (lit by the flash) will stay the same. On a Pentax in the same situation, if you dial in -1 EV on the camera, you will not have a properly exposed subject any more, the subject will be a stop under exposed along with the background, so you have to dial in +1 EV comp on the flash to counteract the camera. Or you can shoot in manual, which is what I usually do, but still, it would be nice have the extra flexibility.

Now the Nikon system does a VERY neat trick, it' relays the focus distance from the lens to the on-camera flash. So let's suppose that you're focused on a subject who is 5 meters away. The camera tells the flash the camera-to-subject distance, which in the case of on-camera flash also happens to be the flash-to-subject distance, and the flash can make a quick guide number calculation and know exactly what power level to set to get a perfect exposure every time. I don't have a Nikon on which to test it, but in theory, it could do this even without a preflash, assuming there is only one light in the setup. No preflash mean much less of a chance that your subject will blink.

Now comes the big one, "zones". With the Canon or Nikon system you can set up groups, or "zones" of off-camera flashes, and control their output from the camera position. You could have your key light(s) in one group, your fill in another, and your background lights in another. On Nikon you can even add a 4th group, so hair and edge lights could be in another. Then if you want your background brighter, you just bump it up from the camera, and the controller flash tells the background group to increases it's exposure durring the "preflash talk". Hair light too hot? Just turn it down from the camera. Pentax only has "channels", which allow you to shoot in the same room with another photographer and not set off their lights. (Canon and Nikon use channels too of course.) But without zones, all lights on one channel fire at one power level, there is no control over lighting ratios.

Another maddening thing about the Pentax flash system is it's implementation of High Speed Sync. HSS, if you don't know, allows you to fire the flash at faster-than-max-sync speeds. It does this by firing a series of rapid bursts for the entire time the shutter curtains are in motion, 1/180th of a second in the case of Pentax DSLRs. The effect is the entire frame is illuminated, where as without it, you would get those dreaded back bars in your flash pictures at the edge of your frame. Now in all honesty, I don't think they're all that bothersome, you just have to frame accordingly. But HSS lets you fire the flash all the way up to the camera's max sync speed, although at substantially reduced power. In practice you get about a stop or two more usable light unless you have the flash obscenely close to your subject. So far we have discussed the problem, all brands face the same challenge with HSS. Where the Pentax system gets so frustrating is you absolutely, 100%, CANNOT fire a HSS flash off camera without having another HSS capable flash on the hotshoe. I put that part in bold because it is the furthest thing from obvious until you buy one HSS flash and try to make it work. The camera looks for the presence of an HSS flash on the hotshoe, and if it doesn't find one, it turns off the pop-up flash, the hotshoe and the PC socket at speeds over 1/180th. In other words there is no way to send a sync signal to an external flash.

Apart from those, there's third party support, now that's not directly under Pentax's control, but perhaps if they had a more serious flash system, these third parties might try to capture some of the as-of-yet untapped Pentax flash accessory market. For instance I think Pocket Wizard has largely ignored Pentax because they don't offer zone controls. So we have only one wireless pTTL solution at the moment from a company called Aoktec, but it translates light pulses into radio waves, so you still have to have a controller burst in your main exposure, even though the slave(s) are triggered by radio.

If all you do is occasionally use the pop-up flash for in indoor portrait, or slide something on the hotshoe to try and capture a vacation memory, I can understand not knowing that we are living in the dark ages of flash technology. But I think a lot of Pentaxians tend to be "natural light shooters", and I don't mean that in the I've-completely-mastered-the-intricacies-of-flash-but-prefer-natural-light sense of the word. I think many of us find flash to be intimidating, and no wonder! It's hard enough when you have all the flexibility of other brands at your disposal, but I think at some point the meager offering that is the Pentax flash system frightens many budding Strobists away from the brand entirely.

Thanks for listening to my rant, hope it's answered a few questions though.

DA* 50-135mm instead of 28-75? Recommendations for extra reach

Congrats on your purchase of the 50-135 pentax. Its my favorite lens.

I just so happen to pair it with the Tamron 17-50. That's a killer combo to carry around. Its my vacation combo when I dont mind carrying some weight.

The 50-135 is really fun to use at dances. Its much smaller than the 70-200 zooms so it is not too bothersome to others if sitting in the audience or to one side and taking pics. If the lighting is such that you can get away without using a hood, its pretty compact. As far as the AF speed, its not the greatest but suits my needs, since I just take pics as a hobby.

On the other hand, I am not sure I would buy any SDM lens without extended warranty. But those kind of warranties happen to super cheap here in the US. Although having to buy second hand rules that out anyway. But again, I have not had any problems with my own copy of the lens. But it gives some peace of mind.

Have fun!

before putting out any cash, do a quick calculation

Image size = subject size x focal length / distance

or if you are unsure of your shooting distance, take the shots made with the 17-50 , which you crop, and look at the ratio of the corp in pixels, to the original frame. if you crop to 50% frame height, you need 100mm, if you crop to 33% you need 150mm, etc.

use what you have shot so far to estimate what you need, and note your original thinking of a 28-75 would only get you a marginal gain, which I believe is a lot less than you are really looking for.

the other side of this is to consider at this point your overall lens system. what do you want to do beyond 135mm for example. and would a 70-200 be better suited?

only you can answer these questions. I wont push any one solution on you because its your money, and my solution, while it works for me, may not fit your needs so I wont even mention what I have

K-01 what an upgrade!

Hello all, I am new to the forums but no to Pentax.

I have had the K-10d since it came out, plus a few zooms and primes.

My normal subjects are kids and nature, or both at the same time more likely!

I was really dissapointed when the K-01 came out, I wanted it to look like the new Fuji X series. Not a fan of the modern design.

Something happened over the last few years.... I found myself not taking as many pictures with my Pentax and using my iPhone more and more. Lazy, I know but at least pictures were getting taken.

I thought about selling the entire kit and jumping to Fuji but it was just too much of a price difference for our budget.

In any case, once the price dropped on the K-01 I thought why not downgrade from the K-10d. Man this is no kind of downgrade....!

The thought of LCD only was intimidating because of past experiences with focusing on LCD screens (I had an old Minolta prosumer that was a pain)

Our main output medium is a TV so there is no way to tell if you are 3600 or 100 ISO, which is crazy. I can shoot in the dark just about with some of my primes. I know that I could have gotten that with a K30, but again its out of the family budget.

Composing on the LCD is actually more convenient in almost every circumstance (except bright sunlight, have to work out the best way to deal with that) just like on an iPhone.

Also I now have teenagers and they have no baggage as to how you are 'supposed' to take pictures. It is interesting to see the workflow move from viewfinder to LCD...

I am pretty much used to the setup and this thing takes phenomenal pics.

The exposure is dead on, and the tungsten white balance compared to the K10 is amazing.

Overall, very happy with my purchase.

A K-01 and an ebay 50mm A version should be enough to get anyone into serious photography very inexpensively. I hope that Pentax keeps the mirrorless full lens idea alive in the future.

Got my K-01 last week. Finally upgraded my aging *ist DL. I was going to get a K-30 but the price reduction on the K-01 made me change my mind.

Some early observations. More or less in line with what others have found, I reckon.

The image quality is excellent. High iso performance much better than the first generation of Pentax DSLRs. Probably at least a 3 stop difference, with iso 6400 being similar to iso 800 on the DL. Dynamic range also much improved. 16 megapixels is however far more than is needed for most practical purposes, 6 megapixels are plenty.

Video is surprisingly good. It will take some practice to get focusing under control though (no continuous AF). Audio quality is not terrible, the built-in microphone being fairly reasonable. I only had a problem when videoing a scene in a quiet room, then you could clearly hear that the camera produces a fair amount of white noise on the audio track. Annoying but can be filtered out in software. This is apparently not a fault of the built-in microphone as I got the same result with a good external microphone.

The camera handles very well and feels quite solid. The buttons are easily accessed (I don't see the problem some have with the green button) and the menu system fairly logical. The right hand side door or flap is not an example of brilliant engineering but once you figure out that to close it you have to slide it in it works well enough. Has not caused any problems for me.

The rubber texture of the camera helps provide a good grip. It is actually a better solution, being less slippery, than the hard plastic that is usually used for DSLRs.

Pentax apparently rushed the camera to market as the initial firmware was simply not good enough when it came to controlling focusing. With 1.01 focusing is however fairly fast and trouble free. Certainly much faster than my old DL. Don't understand why they still ship cameras with the initial firmware.

The 40mm kit lens is an interesting one but mainly due to its small size. Optically it is fine but that's about it. The focal length is a bit too long for a normal lens, the 2.8 aperture not very impressive for a normal prime and it makes a very loud noise when focusing. I see myself using my FA 35 far more than this one (brighter, wider, less noisy, similar IQ and not terribly large).

The camera is fairly fast and responsive. Taking raw photos I never have to wait for the buffer to clear to take the next photo. Burst mode may be rather limited when taking raw photos but when taking jpegs it is fine. The jpeg engine also seems fairly good although I'll probably not use it much.

The camera is somewhat large for a MILC but I don't see that as a problem. Compared to most DSLRs it is quite compact.

Finally - the viewfinder. Having used various Pentax viewfinders for the last 30+ years I don't miss having one that much on the K-01. The LCD is good and usable even from a steep angle. Haven't tried using the camera in bright sunlight or snow though.

Fast, fast focusing 30-35mm prime? For dance photography

Hi all,

I just saw this thread now and I would add my experience in Dance photography with Pentax.

I've been using mainly my K5 with a 35mm | 2.4 Plastic Wonder recently for this kind of event. I find it a convenient lens because of low light capacity and fast focusing. IQ is quiet good.

Some shots from last event:

Of course I had to crank Iso's a little bit to 800, sometimes 1600 (but I dont like too much noise) and I shoot manual, usually as low as 1/40 | F2.4 | 800 ISO. But I had my best shots at 1/80 | 2.4 or 2.8 and 400 ISO.

I was aiming to have the movement feeling on some of theses pictures as well, so a little blur was ok.

When Static, the dancer is sharp enough for some medium or large prints - I've done up to 50 x 70 cm prints on this serie.

the gallery is here

I am waiting for some manual 50mm 1.4 to come (just bought from fellow pentaxian) because I still thinks Im missing on the low light capacity sometimes.

Next saturday Ill be shooting another dance recital but Ill be going with my Sigma 17-70mm 2.8 | 4 that just come from repairs but I think it wont be better than the Plastic Wonder.
When Im a little more far away from stage I use the Tamron 90mm which is great too !

I'd say for the price of the Plastic Wonder (169€ new) you wont regret it, just shoot fully manual to really have the feeling you want on your pictures.

My 55/1.4 did need a +8 adjustment.

If you want to make yourself a poor person's lens align, tripod your camera, take a ruler, set it at a 45 degree angle next to something small, upright, and very contrasty, set your focus point to center (this is key) and focus next to the ruler on whatever you've set up as your target.

Take a shot and see where the focus ends up. Also see if it readjusts the focus as you've said. 55/1.4 is pretty narrow so even moving a little will cause it to re-adjust the focus.

Honestly, I was pleased with my Sigma when I owned it, I am more pleased with the FA 31 limited. I didn't take many landscape photos with the Sigma 30, because it just wasn't strong in the corners (read into that what it is). Out of focus rendering is more pleasing with the FA 31.

Since there was a comment about not seeing FA 31 photos in the thread, I'll just add a couple:

I think the problem with snapping your fingers vs a clapboard or simply clapping your hands together in front of the camera is that it's easier to see the clapboard arm close to match the sound with the motion. I'd think snapping your fingers is a little more ambiguous matching the motion with the sound.
