ok.. I tried outside and using the MF I do not get any kind of a red flash, but the green light at the bottom does come on... Don't know what I'm looking for on the screw jack coupler, but there is a tiny screw that moves when I switch the MF AF switch..

My ist dl does do the 'buzz flash' keeps doing it I miss so many photos! It never did it when it was newer...

I am using a Pentax ist dl with 2 different lenses a Pentax18-55 and a Tamron28-200 .. they both do it..
