Exposure Meter not showing up in viewfinder

I believe the exposure bar scale is active only in Manual mode with a set ISO. If the ISO is set to a range while in Manual mode the bar remains unlight until you set an exact ISO value. When I use an ISO range in Manual mode I will press the Green button and then make adjustments based on the settings the Green button display. If I use the electronic level in Manual mode the K-30 will then display a +/- value to the right of the level allowing me to make exposure settings to my liking. I would recommend resetting all your options and see if works in Manual mode with a set ISO value before you send it for repair. Page 34 #'s 9, 10 and 11 of the User Manual describes EV bar scale.

Remote and Wired Triggers

I did not find a definitive post regarding remotes, wired and/or remote - please direct me if there is one.

I see many trigger options, both Pentax and third party, but I am not sure what the benefits are for each one compared to each other for my K30.

Wired vs Remote: Will a non wired trigger (remote) work when I am positioned behind the camera? When using the wired trigger is the K30 no longer weather resistant?

Functionality: I have read some posts stating that the AF can be active when using a trigger (remote or wired) is that true for all shooting mode selections in the K30? Some of the triggers (remote or wired) have multiple buttons, other than activating the shutter, what other actions can be activated by these other buttons?

When I look for the listing of which Pentax DSLR's the trigger will work with I do not always see the K30. Are there other Pentax camera's that could be listed which would mean the device would also work with the K30? (If it states one "K" model will it work for all "K" models?)

Thank You!

K-30 AE/AF Lock Button

Hi SteveB

Thanks for the reply, I will try your suggestions, I did have it set to 2 and will also try the AE AF link. I have been using Tv as a means to keep action shots in focus but will try Av.

I should probably just leave the settings alone and take many shots to force me to gain a better working knowledge for that specific setting.

Thanks again

K-30 AE/AF Lock Button

Looking for some help using my K-30 getting away from full auto mode.

If I set the AE/AF lock button to AF do I still get AE if I press the shutter release button? I understand if I press the green button I will get AE but if I recompose (let's say I am zooming in or out or taking shots of my child swinging on a swing set) I will focus via the AE/AF lock button - do I need to press the green button each time I refocus to account for a new exposure?

I set the focus point to the center (to prevent auto focusing on the wrong area (IE sometimes the focus point was my daughters hand or the swing rope rather than her face). I now get a focused face but sometimes the results come out darker or lighter as I zoom or recompose.

Should I keep the AF when I 1/2 press the shutter release? I enjoy trying different configurations but it is very frustrating to think I am losing shots because I have changed more than I can control. I have also used the action scene setting for the swing set shots but have had mixed results with that too. Good thing for digital images, can't image how much money I would have spent developing bad pictures:eek:

K30 internal lens correction and third party lens

Thank you for the quick responses Adam and top-quark. I use Photoshop now but I found the lens correction did the trick the few times I needed it with my WR 50-200 and kit 18-55. Not a deal breaker but it is good to know ahead of time what to expect.

K30 internal lens correction and third party lens

Has anyone used a 3rd party lens (The $399.00 price for the Sigma 18-250 macro is intriguing) combined with the internal lens correction settings within the K30? Specifically the distortion correction and lat-chromatic-lat adj. Is there a listing of settings of what will and won't work with 3rd party lenses? Would the AF settings be affected as well (active area, AF-A, expanded) or the D Range settings?

Ofer4 - thanks for the note on PK Tether, being a new Pentax owner I had never heard of it. Very cool interface, more research for me now

Thank you Kaitain - really good info, I plan on digging into the Timelapse discussion as soon as I am able (IE not at work...)

Have you tried a time lapse from day to dusk to night to dawn? Am I thinking the impossible to try to get decent exposure throughout the entire time lapse duration?

Interval Settings

I want to set up a 12 hour sequence every 15 minutes for an outside shot to try to catch an over night snow storm. Using the K-30, what would be the best settings? Does interval only work with preset ISO, aperture and shutter settings? Will auto mode allow for automatic pre shot adjustments for exposure? I am assuming I will want to manually focus prior too.

Wow! Great to see so many great responses regarding Fisheye and Rectilinear
I appreciate the posts and it appears everyone has a favorite and I need to find mine.

I am new to this forum and relatively new to DSLR photography.

Anyone have any examples of eliminating fisheye via software using an ultra wide fisheye? Or is does that cause other issues? Sorry if I missed that in the posts, I used my computer last night to post and am now viewing the replies on my phone.

I think I am leaning to a wide zoom rectilinear and then start saving for a prime fisheye if I do not like the results of the digital filter in my K-30.

Rectilinear vs Fisheye

I want to pull the trigger for my first wide angle lens and I can't decide between a fisheye or rectilinear, prime or zoom. I am intrigued by the 10-17 fisheye due to the 10 being fisheye and the 17 being more of a rectilinear but I also like the 180 FOV. My preference is rectilinear and if I want fisheye can't I just use the fisheye digital filter in my K-30? My experiences are novice with editing software but would software be more or less viable to add or minimize the fisheye look?

I understand a Prime lens will provide a better image compared to a zoom but I would like to use the lens for a variety of uses since I do have a limited budget. My K-30 includes the 18-55 and 50-200 but I find I enjoy composing shots using lower focal lengths for landscape and group photos best. I figure a prime would force me to plan my shots better and ultimately receive better results but a zoom would allow me to vary my options using the same location.
