OK, thanks VisualDarkness. Guess I'm just overly critical / paranoid.

I just talked to the Technical Service at Pentax online and they said that what I'm seeing is not dirt but that the focusing screen is "textured". He didn't have an explanation as to what advantages this provides but he said that most cameras have a textured focus screen. I'm satisfied with his answer but I'm curious if the screens at focusingscreen.com are also textured.

I'm just using the kit 18-55 zoom lens WR that came with the camera. I tried different apertures but it didn't seem to matter. The pattern isn't a fingerprint so much as a very fine black sandy pattern. Its most noticeable when imaging a large uniform color like the sky. the pattern is so uniform that I think it may just be an aspect of the focus screen. Perhaps because this is the entry model Pentax skimped a little on the screen and it isn't crystal clear as I'd expect. Or if could be a Pentax thing as I've only ever shot Canon before.

3 reasons to buy (and 1 reason not to buy) the K30

I agree that the mirror does seem to be very loud. It is especially noticeable when you capture an image from the live view mode because it has to make two movements instead of one and its a bit jarring. I'm surprised that the force of the mirror doesn't cause more blurred images due to camera shake but I guess that's another good reason to have in camera shake reduction.

Hi, I just received my new K-30 in the mail yesterday and so far I like it a lot. However, I noticed today while taking some landscape photos that the viewfinder seems to have a sort of dirty speckled look to it. It reminds me of a matte computer screen almost. I'm not sure if this is normal or intentional for framing reasons or if I got a defective body. The dirty pattern doesn't show up on my images and I don't see anything on the mirror. I've cleaned the viewfinder and the lens but I still see it. Would love to know if others have clear viewfinders so that I know whether I should try to get a replacement from Pentax
