Do you really need a FF ? Why ?

I love the OP's missive about the essence of photography comes down 'to skill level, glass and lighting.' He is absolutely correct. My only petty retort is that I feel a bit cheated by not having the full traditional frame. I loved film and I want my digital camera to be everything it can to fill that roll. (No pun intended.) Sure you can get the 645Z, if you need the pixels. But I don't need the pixels. I love my old K-7. But I would love it even more if I thought it had a full-frame sensor. 14MP and all!

Poll: Would you buy a Pentax Full Frame DSLR?

All things being equal to the current line and If money was no object, I would put down my deposit right now for the first one off the line. I don't care if they are giving the current number of pixels more wiggle-room or putting more pixels on that larger sensor. It just seems like a good idea.

Why there might NOT be a FF

I would love to see Pentax make both a full-frame DSLR and a full-frame medium-format camera. (Those would be my 'dream-cameras.' The 645 isn't full-frame either when compared to medium-format film, if memory serves me correct. Although it is still awesome!) But if Pentax wants to keep up with the big-two, they are either going to need to go to a full-frame sensor format or wait for the pixel-density of smaller sensors to catch up. But then they will always be lagging behind.

And as far as their crop-sensor line of lenses go, keep their midlevel cameras on the APS-C format. That way those buyers can still use them. But for the higher-end market, a.k.a. current K-5 users, it would be better to put them out of one generation of lenses now than wait and eventually put them out of the market for multiple generations of lenses later. (I don't think the 'DA' line of lenses really killed the demand for, or abundance of, legacy- even manual- lenses. There is still a lot of lens options out there. That's part of the beauty of Pentax.)

Plus, as a middle-aged guy into photography, there is the reflex connotation that if a camera's image sensor is smaller than it's film counterpart- it just seems like it will yield a lower quality image. Pixel-density of the sensor and human logic be damned.

Of course, that's just my opinion. But, hint, hint- Pentax!

Fun-raiser event photo "booth" tips ?

I realize this post is about two months old, but I have a couple of questions. And maybe a tip in case you were planning far in advance. My tip is: don't worry about the blokes with their iPhones and the like. In fact, once you're done getting your shot- invite them in to take theirs. You set your camera up on a tripod, probably, to lock in that just-right sweet spot you spent twenty minutes perfecting before the masses arrived. But don't move your camera or tripod. And unless the person was never told 'no' in their life, no one will ask you to. Most people will post-up three to five feet on either side of you, or behind, and take their shot. It will be fine for their Facebook images, but it won't be the one they purchase to hang on their wall. How could it be. The background is all askew with the subject, or someone's (your) head might be in the way. And the shadows are just weird. Also, if the gearheads do stop and ask about the settings, just tell them 'I don't know. I was just hired to push the button on top.' Or just be honest and tell them. But never move your camera. Not to be a jerk, but you wouldn't ask any other professional to move over and let you have a go. (Self-proclaimed drummers and boxers not withstanding.) Plus you spent twenty or more minutes before the show getting that spot just they way you wanted it and you can't let that go every time another group moves through the line.

I forgot my question now. But anyhoo, two months have gone by since your initial post, so you've probably performed the gig. My new question now is: How did it go? And what did you do right and what would you do differently?

Why have you all started using the k-7 again?

I bought a K-7 last month off e-bay and I am loving it. My previous camera was a film-based ZX-M, but all the dials are right where I need them to be and my old lenses still fit, not that they wouldn't a K-5 or whatever. I like 100 ISO, so I don't even know what you guys are talking about when there is mention of higher ISO sensitivity. I know my pics are grainy at 6400 ISO. Are they less grainy on a K-5 at 6400? (That is a sincere question. I really don't know as I don't have a K-5 to compare to.) Personally I would rather spend the upgrade-money on a faster lens and never have to find out. And because it's a Pentax, if I buy a lens that works brilliantly on my K-7, it will also be just as great and functional on a K-3- or whatever they call the next one coming down the pike.

Good point Dominique,

I do have a diopter set I didn't mention earlier that I forgot about and was playing around with again earlier tonight. It's a +1, +2, +4 set and with those stacked I can get closer than an old guy with bifocals. If I do get frisky and pull that lens apart, I will definitely document it. Thanks for the idea. If I make the video, I'll give you Producer credit. Or something equivalent or better. I did since clean the outside with rubbing alcohol and several q-tips. That helped a bunch but there is still quite a bit of flaking inside and there is one aperature blade, just one, that looks corroded through the lens. But that one looks really corroded. Everything seems to work fine, as I found out while I was chasing the cat around the house to test it. I am still leaning towards taking it apart, 'cause like you said, I could probably replace it cheap enough if I screw it up. Hopefully it's not any more complicated than a 3-speed bicycle hub. We'll see.

Also, thanks for the 'welcome' Ash. I love this forum so far, and the camera even more. (Even the shutter sounds nice. I like hearing it.)

I'm thinking Sunday for the lens-dissection. Usually nothing's happening so I can stay focused like a surgeon. I'll keep you all posted and a video link if I have enough SD card for the endeavour.

Thanks,
Joe

Once again, priorities shift, feel I may have outgrown Pentax :(

I don't want to undercut Pentax here any, because I love their cameras and I hope they always make them. But if you are hesitant to buy a new K-5 or K-30, and you don't seem to be against used stuff, try out the K-7. They're getting cheaper every day on ebay. They shoot 720p video instead of 1080 (both have a built-in mic) and it has a slightly slower continuous shooting rate. Images from either one will look great if they are done properly. (But that's true from any camera make.) I'm just getting into digital photography on my own terms, but so far I would have to agree with Bossa from above and concur that it is mostly the lens that makes the biggest difference in focusing speed. Another thing to consider is, since you are shooting sports, is that if you want shake-reduction with either a Nikon or Canon, you have to buy it on each lens, where as Pentax has it built into the body so that you can use it on any lens.

Hi Dominique,
And thanks for the informative reply. Sorry it has taken me a few days to get back, but in between now and then I finally got my K-7 in the mail and I am loving it. Learning it and loving it.

Unfortunately for the 50mm, there is not only residue between the glass, but there is a high-water mark of where the fungus once grew to before it subsided. (Kind of like the moss on a pier, but more dry.) But I would rather chance disassembly to clean it rather than abandon it. Thanks for the Google and YouTube suggestions, I will use them.

Thanks for helping me out. I'm still new here so I don't always know how things work. I found it now, though. Great moon shot. I love how the trailing edge fades into the blue. There is always something beautiful about the moon. Night or day. Craters and all.

Beautiful pics. Great lighting/exposures, incredible expressions on the hat girls and the cute-but-weary clown, and beautiful colors throughout, but especially on the flag pic in the courtyard. Thanks for posting this bit of inspiration!

sequoiagrove: I like your moxie! And perhaps too the cut of your jib. You seem like a good friend in my book! I was sceptical too about first coming back to Pentax. At least until all the plusses seemed to gather on the side of old lenses working with newer bodies and shake-reduction being built into the body. (I abhorred the idea of buying a lens for what is already built-in on another body.) And I always had a strong love for the under-dog with better ideas such as Pentax, Volkswagen and Apple. Now that I have run my course, I hope you enjoy your stay here and if there is anything I can do to help you, let me know. You seem like good people.

Hi Michael. As an interventionist I am obliged to ask you how do you feel about the Pentax lenses? On a scale of 1 - 5? And how does your Canon body feel in comparison to a Shake-Reduction body of a Pentax chassis? Can you feel yourself being freed from the exorbitant cost of proprietary lenses and feel more open to using any or all age of lenses, many with a greater aperture than what you are use to for the price?I kid of course. We are glad you are here. But out of curiosity, what does cause you to break the Canon ranks? My reason was that I already had some Pentax lenses, and I like their business philosphy.

Welcome old4570. I'm sure you'll really enjoy that K5. I wish I had one! I bet you are looking for a really long lens for those moon shots. Don't forget to share your images when you get them. The moon is a beautiful creature.

Hallo, lct!

I've somewhat used Nikon, as a passing user only through others. I prefer Pentax too. What guided you to Pentax from Nikon? I hope to see you around some more.

Hello everyone and thanks for all the contributions to what looks like a great forum. I've been lurking a bit so I already know there is a lot of great knowledge out there, as well as great love for Pentax cameras. I hope someday I can add to that knowledge as I learn more. (I already have the great love for Pentax cameras. But then, there's always room to grow.)

I have a little bit of knowledge of photography from some college courses I took just a bit over ten years ago. And more recently I parlayed that knowledge into a couple of iffy photography jobs. (None required much knowledge of photography as much as working with people; i.e. shooting little league sports teams like anyone's kids will have done towards the end of their season- hand on hip, smile!, and later in a chain portrait studio- sit right here, chin up, smile! But in both of those environments the camera settings were fixed for me. Not any leeway or artistic expression other than great smiles.)

Now I am getting the itch to branch out. Both of those jobs were fun, but thankfully they have rekindled my love of photography.

My previous camera was a Pentax ZX-M full-manual film camera that I bought new back in 1999. I would still be using it if I hadn't damaged it on a Georgia beach a couple of years ago. (I think it was the sand. Now when I put film in it, the film advance fast-forwards it to the last frame, wasting a whole roll of film. Ouch!)

Now I am eagerly waiting for a K-7 that I just bought on ebay to come in the mail. (My fingers are twitching in anticipation!) Thanks to this forum I am confident that my previous lenses will fit. I just hope that my photography knowledge fits as well, although I know that area will need some updating. And I have a ton of questions forthcoming about that. So expect a lot of questions from me and don't be afraid to just tell me to 'shut up and shoot.'

My current lenses are:
SMC Pentax-F, 1:4 - 5.6, 35 - 80 zoom lens (I don't even know if it is auto-focus or not, but I will soon. It was the kit-lens I got on the ZX-M.)
Takumar 1:2.8 135mm fixed focal length lens (if memory serves me, this was my better piece of glass. I got it used, but in great condition), and a
SMC Pentax-M 1:2 50mm fixed focal length lens (I got it used as well and not a bad piece of glass either, if memory serves me right. But during my down-years, I let it get musty and I fear there might be a fungus among us. Is there a tutorial here about how to disassemble and clean a lens?)

I hope that sums me up succinctly. Like I said, I have a ton of questions for you all, but this is probably long enough. I'll try to post my questions in appropriately labeled threads. Hopefully I'll even be able to answer one or two of someone else's questions.

Thanks for having me,
Joe
