I was looking at camera prices and noticed that the K3, an APS-C camera actually costs more on most sites, like Adorama, than the K1 Mark II. How can this be? Are we heading toward an update of the K1 that I somehow missed or is the K3 so much better even with a smaller sensor.

Alas folks the deal seems to be over. I haven't received a CD, but the original, undiscounted price is now on both ebay and the Adorama sites, so yes I'm pretty sure this is the full version. It was just luck on my part that the time I finally made up my mind was the only time this deal was available. It really bookends my experience when I bought LR 4 at $69 and then did a really cheap upgrade to LR6.

List is $299. Adorama has it on their own site and their Ebay site for $179. This is significantly below anything else I see out there.

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. I downloaded a free trial of Capture One and imported all my LR photos in the same folders. Some of the edits were applied but the colors were, as the site says, approximate. I went through a sample of my favorite photos and could achieve the same results or better. There were many of the same sliders but they reacted differently and so there's more to explore. So, I just bought the full version at a very good price - $179 plus tax. I have never liked Adobe's business model and when my LR 6 copy suddenly went on life support (not just me either) it became a no brainer to move. I think I can make this work.

Thanks to all of you for your help and yes getting backed up on a four year old system is something I do need to do asap. In the meantime, after I finish a term paper I believe I will try Capture One as a trial. I want to see if I can improve some of my best photos.

The issue is that I had to create an Adobe school account (I am a very odd 71 year old college student at UMd). I think this is where things went awry as I no longer remember what my original
Adobe login was or it was lost in the crush. ---------- Post added 12-12-21 at 09:06 AM ---------- Ok, I can by for $115 a full version of the last standalone, non CC, LR on CD. I'm thinking it might be worth the risk and give me some time to eventually replace LR in the long run. Does anyone have any idea if I can access my old catalogue with this or if I'm going to run into the jaws of Adobe's security system? It would be great to salvage my old edits and data structure but I'd like to get an idea if there is a risk none of this will work. ---------- Post added 12-12-21 at 09:25 AM ---------- Ok, my general lack of organization may have saved me on this one. I did find my serial number/activation key after logging in, but the installer is no longer available from Adobe. I dug through my downloads on the outside chance that my LR download from 4 years ago would still be there and yeah verily it was. I reloaded it and gave it the serial number and thought I was a goner when it said that I needed to deactivate some computer that already had it. So I closed and clicked the Lightroom icon and it came up with all my photos. I still think this is the gods telling me I need to do something about this subscription, but at the moment I'm back in business. Thanks so much for all your helpful hints.

Thanks, I sorta knew this wasn't going to be easy. I'm thinking that the logical thing to do is just start over with a clean slate on a new platform and if I really need something to dive into the raws.

I no longer have the activation key for this software, so a reload is not going to work for me. All my best finished photos are on my flickr and youpic websites, so at least that work isn't lost. I think I can find the actual raw files on my computer and move them manually and in my current mood with Adobe it probably won't be to Lightroom CC.

I have no real need to update my standalone LR 6 as all my cameras and lenses are quite old. When I punched the icon I got a Sign in Required for Trial Software and then a chirpy little bit about how it didn't like my browser or operating system. I did not sign up for a trial version of the new subscription LR as I own Lightroom 6/ Has anyone had this happen to them? All help appreciated.
Additional info - I did look up the .exe and it is my LR version and not a new version, so Adobe has its tentacles into me on this one.
If this goes pear shaped, I think I can find all my raw files having manually moved them once four years ago. So this is what I'm wondering if worst comes to worst
If I get a LR subscription (I think this may even be free through my school) will it find my photos and updates or am I going to have to manually load all of them? I've never been clear about just what and where LR stores images and edits and dealing with the Cloud is probably not going to be as simple as dealing with my own file systems.
Has anyone had any experience moving LR raws to Capture One? This is my likely alternative if the Adobe move proves too hard.

I am thinking about moving from LR as it is only a matter of time before the standalone version (6) stops working or I buy a camera more modern than a K5iis. So two questions, assuming I move to a K1 Mark2 what raw processors do people like and what are folks doing for image organization?

Suddenly noticed two thin black lines on the left edge of the rear lcd screen. Does not appear sensor related as they are there for info screens. Anyone know what this is about?

I did have 1.5 failures. The K30 out of warranty is now an m42 camera and I'm pretty happy about that. The K50 was fixed in warranty, but when I was waiting the months it took for the repair to come back I picked up a used K5iis. I'm grateful for that too in that it is entirely reliable even after being hard used by the first owner and I like the handling and results better. Did I mention that they managed to disconnect the green button on the K50 and I didn't notice it until too late. The K50 started acting up again and now out of warranty I did the shutter blast technique (not approved, don't try this at home) and got it working again, but in the long term I may convert it into an Contax mount as there are a number of unLeitaxable lenses that are available. I've pretty much made up my mind to only buy flagship models in the future as Pentax let the aperture problem linger too long and then took way too long to fix the K50 under warranty and then broke something else. A used K1 Mark 1 is the likely next target. It would be great to see how my full frame lenses work on a K1.

You all are doing a great job. Here's a suggestion.
Can we have a self promotion sub-forum. Having a little corner of the universe where folks can flack their expertise, services and so on would be a net positive. The Marketplace forum really doesn't fit for services like lens repair, photographer for hire, webinars, workshops and so on. At least one person who was a real value to pentaxforums was removed for self-promotion. Let's institutionalize it and when it crops up, just move it to the Here's Why I'm Wonderful sub forum.

Glad that you're looking at more transparency as it will reduce rumor speculation and dark thoughts.

Beautiful shot with the chairs. Love the colors. Was the Auto Topcor m42 or did you convert it?

Canon FL 55mm 1.2 at 1.2 minimum focus distance. The lens is fairly sharp at 1.2 in the center area or at least it gives that impression because of the white tonal gradations. IMGP9142.jpg by David Miley, on Flickr

That would be the work of one Brian Gohacki who used to be in the lens repair, modification and sales business and was on this forum as DCShooter before he ran afoul of the moderators. He had a catastrophic fire, lost most everything and does not seem to be in business anymore. I knew that he had converted a number of Canon FL 55's - Ivan Vernon has one for example - and I liked the results. He was also local so I saw first hand his own converted version. So I took a risk on a fungused ebay version at a low price and then paid about $180 or so to have it CLA'D and converted. Conversion amounted to grinding down the barrel of the lens a bit to shorten it and then affixing a K mount. I've been nothing but happy about the results.
