Another photo taken by FA50 macro + K3
The more I use this lens, the more I like it. It got a word "macro" printed on, but I use it mainly for landscape. the same goes to my 100wr :)

I recently had the good fortune to be able watch some young Rufous hummingbirds grow from egg to flight over the course of about three short weeks sorry for the long post but with 20 pictures I tried to capture the process - there are two parts:)

East Tennessee is home to more than half a dozen milkweed species. Each is an excellent nectar source for many insects, as well as a food source for Monarch butterfly caterpillars. This has been an especially good year for our commonest milkweed species, called Common Milkweed! In our Tennessee State Parks, we work hard to provide rich and varied habitat, including habitat for our native butterflies. This also gives us (park staff and park visitors) many opportunities to enjoy butterfly watching.
First, here's a photo of a Monarch laying eggs on common milkweed flower buds.
Now a few snapshots of Tiger Swallowtail butterflies enjoying common milkweed nectar.
Here's a Great Spangled Fritillary nectaring at common milkweed, and resting on an old gate nearby.
Here's one that's not a butterfly, but rather a diurnal moth. Snowberry Clearwings hover like hummingbirds as they sip milkweed nectar.
Will end with a few shots of our Tennessee State Butterfly. Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars eat Paw Paw leaves, and the adults love milkweed nectar. This milkweed patch is right near a paw paw patch - perfect habitat for the Zebras!
Hope you enjoyed the quick glimpse of this butterfly habitat, and that it will encourage you to grow native species for the butterflies. Thanks for any comments & critique!

Last week I stopped by Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary with my K-1 and FA* 200mm Macro looking for dragonflies. Blue dragonflies are quite common there, but I've never seen a red one in person before. All the blue ones were busy flying around but this red one decided to pose for me for about 30 minutes! It would land on a branch one or two feet away from the boardwalk railing, I'd take a few shots, then it'd take off for a short flight before landing in a different position on the same branch. It really seemed like it was trying different poses for me!
My battery wasn't fully charged and it ended up running out after 127 shots. It was windy so I had to use a high shutter speed. Too bad, as I wish I could have stopped down more. Very few of my shots were cropped, and if so only slightly. The full resolution 25-36 mega-pixel images are blowing my mind! What do you think? Which is your favorite?

Am I the only one who believes that birds are perfectly well aware that a pathetic amateur is crouching on shore, waiting for for said bird to do something interesting so said amateur can go home and have breakfast? It took nearly half an hour for this one to stop staring vacantly into space and decide to fluff his/her feathers. My knees will hurt for a week.

Finally, they didn't made the iPad that useful, as the app is a webapp available in any browser :) : The link for the 150-450 The link for the 70-200
You can use your keyboard's arrow keys to navigate. When you arrive on the gallery page you have to click on the buttons on the right / left to display the next / previous image. The pictures size is a little small but they seem nice.

Yes it should be, however, since it is weather resistant it probably exceeds the limited status. |

I did an unscientific test today comparing the Bigma to the DA*300 + HD 1.4x TC.
The camera used was a K-30. These are output straight from camera except for resizing.
The camera was on a tripod and I used AF but also corrected manually when the reeds caused mis focus.
(Also the K-30 used FW 1.05 so did not AF with the HD TC. When I returned home I upgraded to FW 1.06 and it now AutoFocus perfectly with the TC.)
The Sigma puts up a good fight and with its wide zoom range makes a good case for itself, but for ultimate IQ the DA*300 with HD TC wins.
Even just using the DA*300 natively and cropping, the resulting crop is at least equal if not better than the Bigma.
This is with the K-30 16mp sensor, next time I will do a similar test with the K-3.
I suspect the IQ gap may be even wider.

Hello, nice to see this forum on PF!
How about to show up our macro rigs we used? :)
Here's the setup I have built recently for macro shots.
Pentax K-01 + F100mm f/2.8 macro + Vivitar 550 FD flash, with hand holder and cheap ball head with flash shoe.
Credits for idea go to Thomas Shahan, I was inspired by his macro setup.
Here's mine: IMGP7350.jpg by cmexonaT, on Flickr

Playing around with macro I took this shot of bubbles inside a soda bottle - handheld macro quite close 1:1 1/60s. f2.8 - slightly enhanced in Lightroom. This purplish color was there from CA I guess - i my opinion it spiced the shot up so I left it untouched :D
(Click on the image for a full HD size )
Looked so nice that I got it as my desktop wallpaper for now :D--manntax

I haven't posted many pictures on here in a while. Here are several from a recent detour I took while driving from Santa Maria to Los Angeles. Jalama State Beach lies at the end of a 14 mile dead-end road that leads from Highway 1. The turnoff is to the left as you drive north just beyond Gaviota Pass, a few miles after you exit 101 for the 1. If you're ever in the area and have time, check it out. The beach is miles long and you probably won't have to share it with more than a hundred people. It's like much of the California coast must have looked 100 years ago. |
