K3 & Pentax-A 80-200

Recently came across a Pentax-A 80-200 f4.7-5.6, just curious if anyone else has used one of these lenses before, I am encountering when I put the lens on the camera that I must manually input focal length, and even at 200, it displays f4.5, not 5.7/ Any suggestions on this?

Thanks

Muted profile or natural profile for better post editing

I've gotten really great results by shooting in the 'muted' mode, then dropped the saturation and all other settings pulled all the way down. Looks pretty bad in camera, but once you get the RAW files in post they really pop as I find this captures a better dynamic range and you get more information out of the shadows and highlights. There's a really great video that was uploaded by Peter McKinnon on Youtube, I will have to find it and link.

I find I am able to get better colors in my final images by shooting in the flattest/most muted mode in camera.

If you don't develop often as I don't myself, I find myself often going for HC110 and D-76 and mixing the D-76 as needed, but its also pretty inexpensive so if you do mix all of it and don't use it it's not a huge loss.

What Film Bodies Do We All Have

Sadly only down to one film body at this time, but just purchased another one and it should arrive in the post next week!

Currently using a Hasselbald 500C (circa 1971), just purchased another PZ-1P (where I started my Pentax journey).
First film camera was an old Canon EX-Auto, from there went to a K1000, then on to a Minolta Maxxium SPXI, then my first 2 PZ-1P's, and the various random Yashica over the years.

Going back to 35mm due to the cost of medium format, and the general lack of interest in my K3 lately.

Really enjoy this photo! Did you add any noise or grain in post?

Could be my poor quality monitors at work, but there is a pleasant level of grain present in this photo to give it some texture.

Aftermarket focusing screen

I think that is what it will boil down to! Unfortunately, I am pretty useless without my glasses but will give the O-ME53 a shot and see what happens.
Then just find a screen that looks good and try it and see how it works, my biggest concern isn't if exposure is off per-se but if it's consistent.

Currently in La Crosse WI, originally from Janesville and lived in the Platteville/Dubuque area for a while.

Aftermarket focusing screen

Just wondering if there is anyone out there that has replaced the stock focusing screen with an aftermarket one?
I've read a few posts from 2014 that metering with the S-Type screen has caused a lot of inconsistent metering issues, and was wondering if anyone has tried any of the other screens from Focusingscreen.com

Specifically I am looking at Focusing Screen and was wondering if anyone else has tried it or if there are some suggestions on better screens for the K3 that don't have the same kind of metering issues.
Ideally I am looking for a microprism or split focus of some type for using my older MF lenses.

All advise is appreciated! :)

Hello all,
been on the fence about jumping ship to Nikon for a wider selection of glass lately, but I think I am going to hold out for a bit until the K3III is available to use along side my current K3...nonetheless, I am looking to add a new lens to my lineup, ideally something that would be useful for both portraits and landscape photography, spent a long time looking at the DA* 50-135 which seems like a solid option, but have heard something about the slow autofocus, personally I am a big fan of Primes so I also considered the DA* 200, but I think that is too much reach with nothing in between 75mm and the 200mm range so that is out.. Ultimately I think I have come down between either the 50-135 or the 60-250 (though with no internal zoom it's less appealing but not off the table). Then I got to looking and I see KEH currently has a few Sigma 70-200 EX DG APO HSM OS for a small amount more than I would have been looking to spend so that is also a big contender on my list. Reading the reviews all three lenses seems like great options, but I would like to see what other folks have to say about these three lens options and why one may be a better choice overall. The biggest two qualities I am looking for is accurate/fast AF and IQ, tho IQ is definitely the priority here.

As of now one of these three lenses will be paired to my K3 and likely a K3III in the not so distant future.

Thanks,
B

Suggestion for buying a beginner-to-intermediate Pentax?

Personally, I would go with a K3, even as a beginner user it is easy to use but has all of the functions that many advanced users love. I have been shooting on a K5 since it came out (workhorse of a camera, still regularly use it) but just picked up a second hand K3 from KEH for under $500 USD with only 2300 clicks on the shutter. Despite being "older" the K3 and the K5 are beasts in their own way. K3's are rated to 200k acuations on the shutter. Some other awesome features the K3 offers (and frankly I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better Pentax DSLR in terms of features until you get to the K1 or 645) is the dual SD card slots, 8.3 FPS, the 86k Pixel meter seems worlds better than the 77-Segment meter on my K5, you also get 27 AF points, better AF system than the K5 or K70, though a downside is the slightly lower dynamic range on the K3 additionally the K3 has a sizable buffer as well. The rear LCD is also much better on the K3 than the K5 or K70, 1.037m dots, and a 3:2 aspect ratio, the K70 does have a flip screen which would be nice to have but for me personally was not a deal breaker. The resolution on the K3 is just a bit higher on paper (though in actual use this is not likely to make any kind of noticeable difference.)

TL;DR my personal recommendation would be the K3 due to its ruggedness, low cost of ownership, and the ability to use it as an entry level camera with relative ease and continue using it well into being an advanced user.

I do have the 2x Magnifier (the flippy kind) that works well, but not when I wear glasses.
The OME-53 looks tempting since I cant see much without my glasses

Looking for a possible replacement for the (new to me K3), as it seems to have the exact same screen as my beloved K5 which I despise lol

I typically use AF lenses but would like to get back to using some of my MF legacy lenses.
Wouldn't mind a split focus but looking for suggestions that would work well for both AF and MF lenses.

Thanks,

Battle of the telephotos! -- 60-250 or 50-135

So, if I am following correctly, the FA* 70-200 would have an AoV (on an APSC sensor camera) of 23 degrees to 8.4 degrees and the 50-135 would retain the same AoV of 31.5 to 11.9.

The 70-200 would appear approximately the same on the APSC as a 105-300 on FF if any of this makes sense. lol

Without having access to try either of them makes getting ready to shell out some $$ a much more involved process.

Yes. That is a more accurate way of putting it, I was thinking more in terms of the AoV on the different focal lengths.

I am very strongly considering the 50-135 or the FA* 70-200 2.8
Since I typically am out on trails and hiking, weight is a concern, but not the biggest challenge since I travel pretty light to start with.

They have similar AoV (but on different formats) Is there a way to calculate what the AoV would be from FF to APS-C?

So my only thing with the FA 70-210 is that these are intended for the FF (AFAIK) which would effectively put the focal range around 105-315 that is the only thing, but I supposed that I could supplement that focal range with something else. (typically used the DA Limited 20-40, Sigma DG 50mm 1.4) Want to keep my kit as light as possible, also would prefer something a bit faster than f4 but gotta take what we can get lol.

Overall I would sacrifice a bit of speed for better IQ.

Looking to drop some money for a zoom (would prefer a prime but need to save space in my bag lol)

Currently between the Pentax DA* 60-250 f/4 or the DA* 50-135, aside from the obvious difference in focal length (both are close enough to 70-200) how would y'all rank these and which would you say is better?

These will be used for portraits and some landscape/nature applications.

Thanks! :)

Alright folks!

I appreciate the input, very useful!
I finally bit the bullet and ended up with the 20-40, haven't used it much yet, but the little I have used it it is fantastic!
Sharp, fast, quiet, and amazing color rendition!

So, I'm in the market for another lens! My primary is a 50mm Sigma DG HSM (approx 75mm on my k5).
I prefer primes but also do a lot of street photography so I'm not looking to have a ton of stuff yo carry around.

I am mostly between the Pentax HD da limited 20-40 f2.8-4 and the Pentax HD DA 35mm f2.8 limited.

I can get each of these lenses within $10.00 price difference of each other.

What you you suggest and why?
I do a lot of landscape/nature, street, and some portrait photography.

Never had a need for GPS or the dual SD slots,
however, I think this might be the smart thing to do. I may pick up a second hand K3 (they're only about $400-600 used) and hold off to see if they announce a 100th Anniversary camera, if not then I will probably pick up a KP (depending on price of K1).

Maybe for the time being just buy new glass to put in front. Just picked up a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for about $350us; should be here tomorrow afternoon!

I think I am dialing in to the K-3 II and the KP, just looking at the specs, they offer similar features.

both offer sensor shift stabilization, similar view finder, the K-3 II offers 1fps faster continuous shooting, built in GPS (not a feature I've had in the past so nothing I foresee needing).

I really like the idea of the articulating screen, but it's something I've not had for the last 12 years so not sure how useful it is to me.
Does anyone have any examples from the K-3II and the KP?

Also it looks like the KP is a bit lighter but similar in size to the K-5 (K-5 740g 131x97x73 and KP 703g 132x101x76).

I am especially interested to see if anyone has any examples of low light performance.

I am most likely to be using the Pentax DA* 55 f1.4 most of the time.

--Correction--
I will actually be using the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG that I just ordered rather than the 55 DA* as my primary lens. Assuming it looks good on the K-5 lol

That is something else I was considering, is build quality, and ergonomics (I find having a battery grip helps immensely).
I did see the KP does not have the top LCD display(?) Image quality is certainly a high priority, but I've been happy with the results of the K-5.

Is the KP the current flagship APS-C?

Thanks!

So after a few years of inactivity, I decided it's time to make a comeback!
Currently I have a K5 (that I love) that I've owned since new. However it's beginning to show its age (tech wise). I would love to go with a K1 but not really in my budget currently (I would rather spend the extra money on better glass). I am currently debating which is best the KP, K3 or the K70.

I like the weight and feel of the K5.

I will be using this for street/nature photography, so low light and dynamic range are important to me. But low light performance is probably the most important.

I've not been on the up and up with products for some time, so I am curious to know the major differences and which offers the best features.
