Security Banning Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

There was a time when interchangeable lenses had some relationship to being a "professional" camera. That day is long past. With the NEX, Micro 4/3rds, and even people using attachable interchangeable lenses on their camera phones nowadays, this rule is as out of touch with reality as a regulation on buggy whips. Not to mention the bridge cameras or large sensor compact cameras capable of capturing a professional level image either... any remaining justification for this outdated rule is being rapidly eroded away from both ends. Furthermore, interchangeable lens cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper to the point that a lot of non-photographers are buying them instead of compact cameras. Quite a few of our friends have entry level DLSR's who have no idea how to operate outside of P mode, but this is what they have now. Banning interchangeable lens cameras means more and more innocent people showing up at the gates and having a guard tell them they can't take their only camera inside and they're stuck.

Personally, I think more people need to start calling or writing their local venues and asking for this rule to be removed, and let them know as well that you will not attend events there which will not allow you to take pictures. It's their right to set rules for their non-public venue but it's our right to boycott and raise awareness. I think I'm going to try calling a couple of places and see what they say.

I'm in, this will be my first photo challenge. I just need to figure out which lens to use first. 18-135mm and 55-300mm seem a little like cheating, what's the point in limiting to a single lens if it's going to cover such a wide range? So, probably one of the primes instead...

As another new DSLR photographer who's starting with a K-30 (I bought mine with the 18-135mm WR lens), I think you made a great choice. Get to know the camera and don't be afraid to experiment. Learn about using the manual modes on your camera, if you're looking for a good book to explain these I recommend "Understanding Exposure".

Alternately, the Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 version is significantly better for somewhere in the $60's.

I also suggest getting a Pentax-A version over the M if you can. I bought my Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 on eBay for $68 and the convenience level is much greater. It's just like a modern lens except you focus yourself. Everything else works like normal. The viewfinder is full brightness and the camera controls the aperture when you set the lens to "A" mode, which you'll do once and probably never touch it again.

Now, the balancing point is that there are some really exceptional lenses in the Pentax-M and Pentax-K lines too, but the really great stuff isn't bargain priced so that's not likely to help you at this point :)

Nice! I too like the Pentax-A line, I've got a 50mm f/1.7 and 28mm f/2.8 so far. A macro lens of some sort is on my wish list, but I'm considering settling for a Raynox for the time being to save cash.
