Q User Group had a GoToMeeting Call with James Malcolm

Fantastic. It is unfortunate however that this meeting wasn't made too public on the forums. I'm sure the rest of the community would have liked to had an input of what was going to be discussed. A public poll would have been nice. I can't really live on forums nor do I have the time to spend much time online. I'd rather dedicate free time towards my hobby of photography or editing photos. It is a tough balance but I guess those who dedicate their time online do indeed have priority in these cases.

Thanks again, this new information is very promising and makes me proud to have purchased the Pentax Q. I look forward to buying more of their products.

nikkor-s 50mm 1.4 @ ISO 125 - F stop: 2.8

Fast lens and very sharp in most cases. Bokeh is strange because it is not a direct light source. It is sprinkles of water hitting a puddle.

Haven't used at night but I will give it a try tonight. Very compact, lightweight. Robust design.

Photography at gunshows

I understand but only commercial photography was not allowed on that property as dictated by the signs. Photography is allowed only if every person in the photo has given you permission (This is what they told me through email). Unfortunately I saw many other people breaking this rule without the staff questioning them. Maybe I should use my phone to seem "less threatening".

All I have to say is that the rules are beyond vague and only apply when someone wants it to apply (as seen at this specific gun show).

Now I know not to try this anymore. Thank you everyone!

Thank you for your first hand experience. Many of the people there were very friendly and didn't mind at all about the photos. I'm not spinning anything here as I'm approaching it from a anthropological standpoint. Just looking at the culture and describing it. Not taking any sides here :)

May I ask you of where I might be able to take photos of gun culture without much difficulty? I am having trouble finding places to take photos (even asking for permission with no luck). Really the only thing I am able to do is look around the city and take photos of how guns are shown in popular culture but I think that is very one sided and hope to get a perspective from people that actually own and respect guns.

They allowed photography to some extent. There were people there taking photos with products at the tables and generally just of being at the event. It seemed fine to take non-commercial photos for personal use but they created the restriction of "you can't take photos of people without permission". They can create that restriction?

Thanks for the quick replies by the way. I didn't make a big deal of it and stopped taking photos and just used my memory instead.

I'm not sure if this thread is in the correct place. I apologize in advance if it is not.

I was taking photos at a gunshow (non-commercial, not going to be published) and after about 10 minutes I was stopped by the staff at the fairgrounds (This is in California mind you) and questioned about what I was taking photos of. I told them "everything" since I am studying gun culture and gun shows. They said I wasn't allowed and I stated that it was only personal and was not going to be published. They seemed fine with this but wanted me to talk to the promoters of the show to see how they felt. I obliged them. After speaking to the promoters and explaining what I was doing they told me to not take any more photos whether it was personal or not. I tried to compromise on what I could take photos of and they said "nothing at all".

I did my research before and knew personal photography was allowed but they did not enjoy the fact I was taking photos of people without permission. I checked california regulations and there is nothing about asking for permission that I could find.

My question to you is if they are violating my rights as a photographer?

I emailed the gunshow and this is the answer they gave me (paraphrased): No photography is allowed without permission of the people being photographed. They have the right (those who own the guns) to determine if they want to expose themselves or their weapons to people of the public with cameras. This protection is needed because some time ago when a firearm owner was photographed he was then followed and robbed after the gun show.

I am really confused about this. Do my rights as photographer only exist in certain areas?

Thank you and I do hope to learn something.

Manual focusing with adapted lens

You would think so but the bracket and screw add very little volume to the camera. You can shoot normally without the loupe on and then when you need it for those long distance shots then you snap it on. It is not impossible to take in focus photos with a manual lens but I imagine it takes a lot of practice. I am not there yet. Although I tend to get in focus photos of people with out the loupe! I can rarely do it with any landscape, bird, or flora shots. Not sure why that is.

I don't mean to derail this thread at all but you said you set your focal length to 1650. This is because of 300 x the 5.5 crop factor right? I haven't been doing this at all. I just would put 300mm. Now, is this just information that is written onto the data of the image or is there a technical purpose for doing this?

It is tough and takes some getting used to in my experience.

I find that just looking at the LCD screen + focusing peaking isn't enough to get a clear photo w/ a manual focus lens.

The setup that I see works very well is a LCD Loupe, Focus peaking, x4 focus zoom (forgot the correct term for this on the camera). Once you are in that x4 zoom then you can use the keypad to move around to different parts of your photo to see which part you want to get in focus.

almost everyone I see here with crisp photos usually use this setup. You can invest a lot of money into this but you can go budget too. There are a few magnetic bracket loupes out there for under 10 bucks that work great.

Your shots with the 06 are making me want one. Unfortunately I have bought the 03 fish eye.... I will wait until the next line of Q lenses come out and make a choice then I think. Thanks for sharing all the wonderful shots.

Mount the camera upside down. Find a spare hotshoe cover and glue it onto the top. You just will need to flip the photos in PP and you will have access to your usb port.

This was completely underexposed. It was just right at sunset and I shot at 1/1250 at ISO 125. By the time I switched the shutter speed down the pelican was gone. I did my best to salvage the photo but I think it is pretty impressive using a 200mm lens (1116 35mm equivalent) at sunset.

My biggest enemy is my tripod...or the millions of rocks I was trying to find a flat surface on.

Excellent photo! I see you have the stock cap on there. It is a small investment but I purchased a third-party body cap + lens rear cap that are mount onto the camera rather than sliding out/in. It really is a number 1 accessory to have for such a small camera in my opinion.

I like the one the OP posted but I think focusing in daylight would still be better with the hood. It does add a lot of mass to the camera though :/

I heard about the comet Pan-STARRS showing up this weekend and was wondering if anyone was going to try to get some shots of it. It has been really cloudy here so I'm not sure if I'll have the chance this weekend.

That is exactly what I was looking for. I will test it tonight and see what I can get with it!

I have to say...this fisheye lens make this Q perhaps the coolest camera ever. It is so small and with a monopod and remote...you can get some pretty amazing shots! Great price too...

I also have to recommend getting better body caps. I bought 2 very cheaply that connect rather than sliding in.
