This is both good and bad.
I am for one VERY happy that they are committed to the highest of standards of quality control. Absolutely NO QUESTION on that. I actually give them big credit for staying true to what we all want and have come to expect from Pentax.
On the other hand this exposes some critical errors from Pentax (Ricoh). They have limited resources just like everyone else does, but they are not focusing their efforts where they have their biggest weakness. They drag around like lenses are a second thought. Design your own zooms for FF? NOPE and NOPE.
Pentax (Ricoh) is an electronics company. That culture needs to change. Don't abandon the strengths, but make the weaknesses stronger. If they would hurry up and fill out their lens selection--and focus on THAT it will help their bottom line a ton. At the rate they are going it will be 3 or 4 years before they have an acceptable lineup of lenses.
Honestly if I won the powerball tomorrow I would start investigating other options. It's not because I don't like Pentax or that Pentax offers bad stuff, but they are taking ten years to give me what I could just go out an buy tomorrow from someone else if I had the cash. I am being patient but geez man this is getting old.
I don't mind a couple of months delay for a fifty that I might eventually get, but I would hope this would mean they can offer other subsequent lenses at a faster pace once they get the bugs worked out of the new line. We are at least five prime lenses away from having the lineup they need.
For me personally what I want seems to be their absolute last thing on their to do list. It's kind of getting old to be honest.

The K-1 is a great camera. The Mark II version offers almost nothing new - as noted in the "upgrade service" a new board and some software enhancements. I would have hoped for an updated sensor, but no. Not much after nearly two years. I would have put more money into expanding the FF lens line - which really needs it.

Am I the only one here to think it's a non-event? Everyone's smug for a very minor advance of the K-1... I don't see anything fundamentally revolutionary in these few new developments. Just the impression that pentax remains on a defensive position, and stagnates more than it advances. Sorry, for me I only see here a rather disturbing sign, open to you to see a outstanding spirit of innovation....

I'm so very confused, if the pictures just posted to pentaxrumors is correct... I literally just took out my K-1, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. This looks identical in every way to the camera I currently have in my hand. Looking over the specs, besides a boost in ISO performance, maybe a slight improvement on Pixel-shift (which I truly didn't ask for)... I fail to spot the key difference. What am I missing?? People keep comparing this to the K-5ii release, but removing the AA-filter was a big deal, and the improvements to ISO were very needed. This literally feels like the same camera. I think ISO can be difficult to spot, especially in a camera that already had amazing ISO control and dynamic range... Is this really what has delayed development of a APS-C or Medium format successor??... 'say it ain't so Pentax, say it ain't so'...

At the end of the day, improving the image quality of the camera only goes so far when we're stuck with lenses from yesteryear. I get that Canon and Nikon recycle designs too and use a lot of their film era lenses with minor updates (Canon especially), but they do have a healthy stock of lenses designed for high resolution sensors. Pentax has few at the moment.
It seems that's the case. The issue is the AF tech. It's a good 5-8 years behind at this point. There's really no excuse for that now.
When I shoot at f/2 with the DA*55, the only high resolution normal lens for the K-1, my keep rate is like 20%, if that. I have to shoot 10 images to get one or two that are fully sharp; most are close but off by just a bit. I've really gotten tired of it. A new lens would be nice but it's been two years and Pentax still hasn't produced the 50mm we've been promised....
The image quality of the K-1 is quite good. That's not an issue, really. The product line, however, is. More than that, the message this sends is not one of confidence. It's been two years since the K-1 came out and we've gotten what for it? NOT ONE NEW FF LENS in that time. This update, to me, says "This is our product and our product line and it's not going to improve." Feels like the K-1 was a bone they threw to long-time Pentax users but they either don't have the interest or the resources to develop it into a product line that can remotely compete with the offerings from Canon and Nikon.
And I'm not even talking about having two hundred crazy lenses in weird focal lengths. A modern 35mm. A modern 50mm. A modern 85mm. We have none of those. The 24-70 is a rebadge. We've been waiting for two years for some of these products and gotten nothing.
A friend of mine had the 645Z and really loved the camera. The lack of third party support (i.e., his flash equipment which said it would work with HSS and just didn't despite his efforts) and a sense of "This is all I'm going to get" is what made him abandon it for Fuji. I may finally understand.

Not much to see here it seems. Nice adjustments to a nice camera but until Ricoh gets auto focus that competes with Nikon/Canon I'll stick with my K3ll. Would love a Pentax full frame but it has to do a lot better with autofocus.....

I have to say that Pentaxians relationship with Pentax reminds me of a Grandfather driving his grandchildren on vacation. They are in the back seat yelling periodically, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" While he silently drives at 35 miles per hour towards a place that they are really going to like. The combination of the Grandfather's silence and his slow driving slowly drives his grandchildren crazy.
The analogy is not perfect, but certainly the things that bother us the most are the lack of communication combined with a slow rate of change.

Yet the K-1 cannot replace an APS-C flagship - it simply doesn't have the speed; and Ricoh Imaging said they'll do an APS-C flagship.

The batteries and the lack of an LCD on the top plate are probably the biggest reasons I'm not very interested in the KP. I'm sure that some would regard this as silly but there it is.
