Pentax is definitely late to the party (should have been released last year), but I don't necessarily think it's over priced. It's cheaper than RX100 by a good margin, $100 cheaper than G15, XZ-2, and X-20, about same price as P7700, slightly more expensive than LX7, if you factor into LX-7 close out pricing.
Fact is, every camera in this class has its strength and weakness. I don't like RX100 for its lens speed, I don't like LX-7 for its cheap construction, I don't like G series for its stupid viewfinder and menu system...
I, too, don't understand why people are asking for viewfinder. Hotshoe? Maybe. But Pentax flash system is nothing to rave about. And if you add a viewfinder like the one on G series, you add cost and size, and it's completely useless. So what's the point. EVF? I mean, seriously? Do you really expect Pentax to come out with an EVF just for the MX? The Q and K01 can't accept any EVF, unlike some Panasonic and Olympus cameras.
What we know is that it's got a proven sensor (DXO mark score 50 - same as X-10, much better DR, noise than last-gen 1/1.7), on par with competition, one of the fastest lens on compact, and a solid construction.
So TONIGHT I just bought an MX-1. I already have P7700 (DXO mark score 53!!) which is, IMO, the best of this serious compact group. I'll be doing some comparison.

I say this as an Oly XZ-1 owner. The camera took very nice photos. The menu system of the XZ-1 was horrible and confusing and there was little ease of use with that camera. The MX-1 menu system is a breeze - very easy to use and remember. The Oly XZ-1 was lens heavy and not very well balanced in the hand and has the same lack of compactness as many of these enthusiast p&s cameras. The MX-1 is very well balanced. The Oly XZ-1 lasted me 20 months of fairly light use before completely dieing on me ... time will tell on the MX-1. The Oly-X2 is $100 more than the MX-1.
Unlike many, I speak from experience as a MX-1 owner and not just from looking a spec sheet. There are many things that look great on paper and don't meet expectation and vice versa. And I have had the MX-1 now for a couple of weeks and have posted a few pics but quite honestly, I don't post many photos to forums regardless of how long I've had the camera.
For what it is worth, I'm quite enjoying the camera and it fits my purpose beautifully (a competent p&s when I don't want to lug around the dslr / lenses).
