I tried the newest version of the colorchecker software and combined it with the sg chart (140 swatches). They are still flat but color accuracy and highlight clipping is a little better now. The sg-profile is also darker (thatīs maybe the reason for the clipping improvement).

The idea is to make a default profile that works in a lot of lighting situations, no matter what lightsource is used in the actual shoot. Capture one usually delivers the right profile made for the specific camera model. The profile is applied at the end of the image data pipeline, so color is interpreted after you adjust brightness, contrast and so on. That for you use a lightsource with a rather full color spectrum (daylight, studioflash). The lightsource is usually described on the test sites, also the lens that was used. The most popular sites are very detailed about it.
Dont forget: You can tweak a color profile with the C1 color tool and then save it as an ICC profile. I once made a preset mimicking Fuji Provia by applying the values of a Fujichrome Provia 100f preset from Color Efex Pro (once a free software).

Come on. I downloaded a raw file and processed it through C1 as described by x-rite.

Yesterday I tried the free Colorchecker Passport Beta Software with a colorchart I found on a test site. This is what I got out. The profile color accuracy is good but it is rather flat compared to the neutral DNG profile in C1. This may be a good thing depending on workflow and taste.

Mirrorless and 45MP, its all subjective. As a portraitphotographer the optical viewfinder gives me the immediacy I have not found in any mirrorless (Sony A7III, Fujis etc.). I would rather have glass between me and the Person than a screen. And the smoothness in texture does not come from nothing. The 36mp sensor is super mature. Raw files are flexible for any lighting situation. Also the K1-II has a very robust color reproduction in the higher ISO range.
And yes, wishfull thinking is allowed. And yes photography will allways be a compromise.

Hi,
spoke to a P1 accountant at a trade show.
A new version of C1 will be out in a few days (mine is pretty old).
Also I will borrow a Color checker from a friend and produce my own colorprofiles under daylight.
The DCAM Prof Workflow works fine. You only have to adjust the exposure of your tiff-files.

Just visited a photo trade show where I tested a bunch of DLSR and Mirrorless cameras. A Dslr (like my K1 M2) is still the least camera that gets between you and your subject. My first shootings (editorial portraits) proof that the K1 is a highly reliable camera. I barely had to use the menu and can comunicate with my subject.
I just wish I had the new DFA50 1.4. A reliable lens that performs in backlit situations without loosing color information (compared to my F50/1.4) is the perfect profession match for the K-1 IIs color science (stole that term from canon).

Its easy: The K-1 (II) is THE fine art (portrait, landscape, fashion) camera. Large file sizes, heavy, renders more threedimensional, fine tonal gradation (nice in B&W) ... The KP is a (unrecognized) reportage beast (with limited 21mm 3.2, ltd 20-40, the tamron 17-50 delivers stunning image quality too). Smaller file size, snappy (like K1 II) and much lighter (with the right lenses) ...
horses for courses!

Hi,
I wanted to clean the inside of my AF SMC-F Zoom lens as I did with the SMC-F 35-70.
With this lens I have a reassembly problem. I canīt apply the front tube where the front element is screwed in and which is the main focusing element I supose. Inside the tube is another tube with a focusing thread.
Any ideas?

I use this one. Toploader Pro 70 AW II | Lowepro
Holster bags are much underrated but give fast access and sit close to the body. Vintage Tamrac 515, 517 and 519 (made in USA) are my favorites. They are softer and hug the body, so you can move and climb. I even did a trailrun when I had to flee a thunderstorm. The Lowepro is not as bodyhugging as the Tamracs but gives space for a flash and has a nice topcompartment. It even carries my P645.
For the K1 (and 645) I use bags with metal hardware.
BTW as a bagoholic I buy all my bags barely used for bargain prices.

Tweaking colors without a specified K1II-ICC Profile is not worth the hustle. The DNG with Custom Profiles via Camera Test websites is just acceptable when you batch-apply a picture style. BTW Capture Ones ICC-Profile varie a lot in quality. So a custom profile may sometimes be more satisfying then the supplied one.

Hi Stefan,
I solved the problem by making custom profiles for my K1IIs DNG files DCamProf
Look for the "profiling for capture one" part. You can download the photographed charts on the imagingressource website. You have to find the right datasheet (colorvalues) for the chosen chart. It is often part of the argyll-package. Pentax K-1 II Review - Samples
The testcharts from Dpreview might work as well.
It will take you an evening until you get your batch files right.
When importing your DNG-Files apply a picture style with the icc profile embeded.

I rented a GR as a second camera for event work in reportage style. I have to say this little thing is for the professional or very very dedicated photographer. The menus alone take some time to master. It needs a refined shooting technique. Most hobbyists are not cappable to get good results out of it.
This is not a camera for everybody. So 4k and other secondary features are not important.
Improved AF and a contemporary sensor are all welcome if Ricoh does not mess up with the core feature: Responsiveness.
BTW The Fuji XF10 seems to be not a serious competition (thatīs what reviews say). To much shutter lag and lacking responsiveness for reportage work.

I use a Feisol Monopod for reportage work. The twist mechnism is fast. And speed is everything when shooting reportage. With an additional loop of cord, where you can step in, you can make a super fast tripodlike monopod setup.
All this I use for still images. I have not very much experiences in Video.

C1 allows to write your own default NR values for specific cameras. Sounds like a reasonable solution. Double NR is too much of a good thing.

I asked myself if some of the bad experiences with the K-1 MKII come from applying noise reduction to a allready noice reduced raw file. Capture One for example applies a fair amount of noise reduction by default until you push the slider to the left and disable it.
What are your experiences? How do you deal with that?

Relax. There is the same differentiation in the wood of the black table (darkest of the darkest parts of the picture). The whitebalance is not the same. K-1 II also has higher color saturation than K-1. K-1II needs to be properly calibrated by the raw software (where as i suppose the higher saturation will be pulled back and finally give nicer high ISO results than pushing paler K-1 images).

Capture One 7.2.1 is out and supports K-3 PEFs natively. No need to convert to DNG with Adobe DNG converter.

Pentax 67 and 645 cameras have been professional cameras without being perceived as professional. The fashion industrie was too far away from the average photo nerd. But as a former Mamiya owner, who did not understand the Pentax medium format concept, I have to say I was very wrong. Pentax medium format seemed to me to have limited abilities compared with the modular Mamiya and Hasselblad. But owning them now I shoot much more intuitively, focused on the subject and the relation to the models. I love it. David Lachappelle used them, Patrick de Marchelier, Tim Walker etc.

Hi,
if you convert a PEF-file with Adobeīs DNG-Converter, you can use DNG-files in Capture One without having this weird green-purple tint.
Color is still not very accurate. Try to apply different colorprofiles from previous Pentax cameras.
