based on these three images, HD DA 40mm does seem to render punchier but cooler images compared to the FAs... but this difference is so minute, I am not even sure it will hold true for some other set of eyes...

I don't really want anything out of it. It came in a bundle with other goodies, so I didn't (and still don't) have any interest in it. When I foolhardily thought it was in good condition, I listed it for as low as $0.99. Now that I discovered the problem and already cancelled the auction, I just feel like giving it away. Interested?

What can I say about the condition of the lens now for eBay? Is it "ugly", "bargain"? Do I end the auction and give it to the highest bidder for free, since I made a mistake of not inspecting it closely before listing? I would hate to be a liar and bad sport...

Yes, you really have to light the lens appropriately to be able to see it. And the images are perfectly fine.

Hey guys,
I wanted to sell this lens on ebay. At first, I was not sure that this was present. Then I realized, it may be just oil or "discoloration" in the lens. Now I am thinking, possibly, it may be fungus...? I have never seen a lens with fungus in it, so I need help identifying the problem. I wanna cover my bases before I sell it... I appreciate any help!

It doesn't look like a legitimate shop. Look at the security verification buttons at the bottom of the page, and compare those with a legitimate websites, like BuyDig.com - Online Shopping for HDTVs, Digital Cameras, Computers, GPS, and more! or Newegg.com - Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More!. They should link to actual security information of the website for that given date, but instead they link to general information page or nowhere at all.

I just tried it on K-5, and yes, you can use liveview in bulb mode.

I am also about one year into photography and have the same lenses that you do. I shot them with K2000 and now I use them on K-5. Looking at the K2000 images (since it preceded K-x), I find no problems with sharpness of shots when the lenses are stopped down quite a bit and shutter speeds are relatively fast. K2000 gives quite bad results when ISO >400, and in fact I can't find pictures that are shot above that.
DA55-300 gives me less sharp images compared to DA35. I blame it on it being a zoom and not a prime and physically larger and longer and requiring faster shutter speeds (which I can't always afford). Analysis of K2000/DA35 images show super sharp images (for my taste) =at f4-11, iso100-400, 1/45 or faster shutter speeds.
I am happier with the lens on K-5 for two reasons: it performs better at higher ISO (allows me to stop down and use faster shutter speeds), and it is heavier (up to 300 grams of extra weight compared to K-x/K-m/K2000) which makes camera/lens much more stable in-hand.
And, also, I am trying not to shoot DA35 at f2.4 if I can avoid it--teaching myself to stop down a bit is giving good results.
