K-5 in Australia?

if you've been in a retail outlet recently the "noob" buyers outnumber the pro amateurs but a large deal and they can upsell the noobs with useless/overpriced accessories. I was in one today - very cringe worthy.

The vanbar group buys happen i think because the retailer is getting XX stock in but they are told if they get more they can get a volume discount, so they organize a group buy at little profit to make the volume up so both parties benefit.
But in this case, the volume discount cant be organized or is not being offered.

Does that mean the price you paid is well above street price or that you just "borrowed" it from the distributer without a price?

To me the most unrevealed feature is the price

k5 > $1600 US = no
<$1400 = YES

kr > $800 = no
< $600 = yes

35mm > $300 =no
< $200 = yes

Im going to also assume that prices in asia / EU / USA are going to be different because of the varying exchange rates / taxes so I would like to have an idea if im going to buy local or import.

was that the kx or kr lol. not everybody is made of money ;)

have you got a confirmed price for the k5? here in Aus one place had listed it for $1400US body only then changed it to $1600 this week.

3x the cash for better body / 1 stop iso / better AF / 1080p might be hard to justify for some.

found this in a blog from last years winner - pentax should put this on their front page ;)

"The weather proved a tad too much for my equipment, and almost too much for me! Rain combined with strong winds meant that the waves were constantly crashing over our zodiac, drenching all on board. I’m not sure what the temperature was, but because of the wet, I was absolutely freezing. Thank goodness my Columbia clothing kept my torso nice and dry, but ice water seeped it’s down the top of my pants, and my hands were frozen claws. My Canon camera was worse off than me – it simply died.

I was devastated for a little while, as I was silly enough to not bring a backup kit, but Jason later produced a Pentax body and lens kit for me to use. Phew! Pentax has invested a lot in weather sealing their cameras, and it obviously makes a huge difference. All the passengers I know who had their cameras out today experienced some sort of fault, only Jason’s gear kept going.

I had made the very silly choice this morning of bringing only my Canon body and lens with me. Though they had been damaged the day before in the rain, it seemed to come back to life this morning. I thought that it must have fully dried inside and therefore back to normal. Boy was I wrong.

Within half and hour of landing, my Canon body stopped responding, not even powering on. I had left the Pentax Jason loaned me on the ship, not thinking that I needed it. Now I’m kicking myself, devastated that I wouldn’t be able to photograph the rest of the island despite the perfect light, and angry with myself for not being better prepared. Yet again.
That’s how Jason found me – dull-eyed and feeling sorry for myself. He tsked me for leaving behind a working body and magically produced yet another spare from his backpack. What a lifesaver! "

btw, the canon camera that died was a 5d mk2
____
oh and for pentax sponsoring this - I think the mentor jason edwards might have something to do with that - think he uses pentax gear. michaels which is also one of the sponsors might actually be putting up the $2k worth of gear (they are a shop)

I could see sigma really kicking some goals by developing some sort of multimount adapter that fits on their SD1 and allows use of canikon/pentax lenses! Wouldnt that be something?!
The sensor would probably be on some sort of rail to adjust for the focal distance?

I would say its good if you buy nikon early as you hardly lose anything over time.
Good if you plan to buy pentax 1 year after release as the price has dropped so much giving it great value.
Bad if you're an early adopter of pentax because the price is too $$$

Too late for this generation - that was the K-r 's prerogative. In terms of sales and production costs I think they decided for funky colours over weathersealing. I think the K-r is already creeping up in price and adding weathersealing would probably put it square above the prices of the 500d / 5000d which kills the point/value

very interested to see if pentax can pull out any surprises.

looking back I think the great thing about pentax is that most bodies they have released have had features at a pricepoint that were not available before

k10d - 40d resolution/features released a year earlier as well as being cheaper. First in body SR + pro body.

k100d - breaking new ground for lowest price dslr as well as first (?) to have iso3200
in body SR at this price point also adds to the money saved. canikon didnt bundle SR in their kits lenses until much later.

k20d - highest mpx camera at price point at time of release. first to have micro adj for more than 1 lens in this class (?) wacky 21fps option @1.6mpx as its the last body released before movie mode.

k200d - cheapest weather sealed body available, still also keeps the top lcd.

k2000 / km - released 3 months after 1000d but severely undercuts it on price

k7 - first camera to have hdr - first to have pro body + movie clips (?) - first to have 100% viewfinder for this price level.

kx - raises the bar considerably on the iso front, especially considering the price, funky colours to appeal to wider market

kr - IR transfer? first to offer dual power source - first to offer 5fps at this price point (?)

k5 - with d7000 release - anything??

I think its pretty good that they have been able to do something special or undercut the competition for every release for such a small company.

Just really hope pentax can keep the ball rolling either on the features or price front.
imo improved flash/mpx/iso/af just to be even with canikon isnt enough. It needs to beat them in some way.

ok, just thought of 1 thing they can have, the rumoured 8fps at this price point. Just hope there is more.

for someone who doesnt know what they're going to shoot doesnt a bagful of primes really equal a 2 zoom kit?
The only benefit being that it doesnt always have to be around your neck?
Plus the pro-zooms cannot really be made to look inconspicuous.

Traveling at the end of the year and cant really decide what to do regarding this.
I can probably take as much gear as I want but dont really want to be carrying it all every day.

Going as a 2 person / 2 body team - what do people suggest is a good setup?
I have a few primes (no 70/77/85 tho) but no pro-zoom AF 2.8 in either wide or tele.
I have the 18-250 though and a MF 180 f2.5
My biggest urge atm is to get a 70-200mm sigma or a 50-135.

Which to keep....F50mm F1.7, or FA50mm F1.4?

oh - so f1.7 > FA 1.7 > f1.4 > FA1.4 @1.7/2

and lucky for me I have an f1.2 + 1.4 + 1.7 --- decisions! :)
tempted not to sell anything but there is always the benefit of selling things to fuel more LBA.

Do you mean the any preference to the K / M / A spec of this lens? lol I have 2 of these too...
I just realized I have 7 x 50mm lenses !!! haha. - time to trade up to a 50-135 or something me thinks.

hmm so f1.4>f1.7>FA1.7>FA1.4 @ f1.7/f2 ?? (for sharpness)

I've got a bunch of 50mm's and too need to decide what to keep...

having a f1.2 + f1.7 combo would be ideal?

so the gist of it is, you're probably better off getting the newer tamron 90mm AF which is about 400US anyways

that is of course unless you can get the old tamron 90mm basically for free?
the last ones on sale in the forum were about 200 so that plus the 150 for the adapter and you can understand what im saying.

actually I think you dont have to pay the paypal charge to give their money back.
You just click "reject payment" and its no harm no foul.

The problem though comes when the seller clicks "accept pament" to 2 or more buyers, potential scam possibilities are also there.

OH noes - i've been outed

yeah I was weary of the low price but we'll see.
did u ask him and he said the front element needs to be replaced?

I really just wanted to have a play with it so I could see what the fuss is about.

I hope I wasnt naive as I bought my 70-150mm soft for about the same price and that was in perfect condition. I dont think im ever going to sell that.

lol - cool.

I think people that visit these forums drive the price down and people that dont drive it up!
ends up being the same and really just depends on availability i think.
With only 3000 made, I think its going to be difficult to get one.

I also think that the majority of them now are being used on a pentax system which is why the PKA adapters have gone through the roof.

lol - u guys are trying to kill me ;)

Another problem is that I've already got another of the rare tamron lenses
70-150mm f2.8 soft.

I was thinking that adding the 180mm wouldnt be too much benefit?
If I didnt have that soft lens - I would get it for sure.

Although having this would make it my longest f2.8 lens - and its not a macro lens either so I cant justify it as my "macro lens purchase"

btw. I dont mind buying lenses if I can be quite certain that they will retain their value. Thats why I didnt hesitate to get the soft lens when I saw it.

Any idea on the price guys? eg blue what range would u pay for one? 200US? 300US? 800US? lol
I just want a rough idea so I'll know if im getting a bargain or paying too much. I wont tell how much its being offerred to me for if its going to make some people cry =P

On the above link it lists it at 133,000 yen new which was a little cheaper than the 80-200mm f2.8 // and half the price of the 300mm f2.8 both of these lenses which I could initially see good uses for. 180mm f2.8 with no macro just seems a bit wierd.
