The K-3 finally has what I've been looking for in a DSLR.

I don't get it. The K3 adds a few more fps and a bigger buffer for $1300. All the rest is just fluff and barely used, or even recognized, by your average shooter. Give me an articulated LCD and decent live view and I'm in. Otherwise, there is nothing really new here since I bought my last Pentax, the Kx. Still waiting while they play catch up. Does Ricoh really think pro shooters invested in thousands of dollars worth of lenses are really going to switch to the K3? It's delusional.

Wrapping my head around the K-01

The contention by Mervis that the K-01 is comparable in size to similar cameras is inaccurate. According to the suggested website the Pentax is 38 percent thicker and 40 percent heavier that the NEX 7, 41 percent thicker and 40 percent heavier than the EM5 and 41 percent thicker and 60 percent heavier than the Fuji X10. It is almost identical in size to the Canon G1 X, but that of course is without a lens. Size wise in comparison to other mirrorless cameras, the K-01 is a total fail. Where it matches up very closely in size is to the Kr that has live view and a viewfinder. Why buy a crippled Kr when you can have the real thing?

Do we like it or not

The K-01 is deeply disappointing. The whole point of a mirrorless camera is reduced size and this camera is virtually identical in size to the Kx and only loses 8 ounces. Mirrorless needs either an EVF or a tiltable screen (preferably both) and this has neither. Being able to use K mount lenses is a plus that will not be useful because of the LCD only framing. Imagine holding this camera out in front of you with an 18-250 zoom? Not going to happen. As a main camera, it is missing too many features and as a backup it's too large. What is the point? I have waited patiently for Pentax to fill my shooting needs and have watched the last releases with dismay. The K-5, although brilliant, was way overpriced, the Q was silly, the recent point and shoot with two shooting buttons is a joke and now this. This camera has no purpose. I would even have purchased a new model Pentax SLR with great live view and a tiltable screen, ala Sony 580. I have been looking at Sony for mirrorless (and their SLRs) where you can have great live view, EVF and tiiltable screen. I am deeply invested in Pentax lenses and it is going to cost a ton of money to switch, but there is truly no hope that Pentax will join the 21st century. On the other hand, if I was a Canon shooter waiting for a mirrorless I would be ready to slit my wrists at the G1-X. Fixed lens four by zoom with a miserable optical viewfinder for $800? I wish you all the best and hope that Pentax comes up with something, someday that makes sense.

SDM is a flawed technology that Pentax refuses to acknowledge. Search this forum for users with multiple failures with expensive repairs. I would not touch an SDM lens.

Sigma vs Pentax Lenses (& Pentax SDM problems?)

It's actually not funny at all. An SDM lens user that paid $900 for a DA 16-50 f2.8, for example, and then have it fail three times after the warranty runs out at $200-$300 per repair is not a joke. My problem is that I am heavily invested in Pentax, having never owned any other brand, and I cannot buy their best lenses with any sense of reliability. I shoot professionally for a newspaper and cannot afford to have a lens fail. Sure, I bring backup, but there is no way I can afford to continue to repair a lens system. I am not a Pentax basher. On the contrary, bang for the buck Pentax is the best camera value on the market. SDM lenses, however, are a flawed design which Pentax has chosen to ignore.

The SDM design flaw is not a generalization. It is a fact based on solid evidence from numerous users who report multiple failures. Search the forum. If you are willing to call those who made such reports liars, have at it. It is not the flaw that is the problem. As you correctly say, every system has its problems. It is Pentax refusing to acknowledge the problem and provide meaningful relief. Boycott SDM.

I have posted numerous places on the SDM debacle. It is astounding that Pentax is ignoring this obvious problem. All my upgrades have been canceled including the K5, 18-125 and the 35 2.4. If Pentax does not acknowledge this issue, I will be forced to buy into another system. I cannot in good conscious shoot or recommend a system that has such a flaw.

SDM does have a design flaw. The Pentax response noted that there was no higher repair rate than any other lenses under warranty. A slew of SDM failures occured, and continue to occur, out of warranty. I signed the petition some time ago. Pentax's failure to acknowledge the SDM problem has kept me from buying the K5 and additional lenses as I decide whether to change systems.

Has Pop Photo lost its mind or am I missing something? The K5 gets a 26.7 unacceptable ISO 6400 rating while the Canon 60D gets a 3.4 and the Nikon D7000 gets a 4.4. This would mean that Pentax has managed to create the noisiest digital camera in history. In the same issue, the Panasonic GH2 gets an ISO 6400 rating of 11.6. I know for a fact that the K5 beats the GH2. What gives?

Tamron 18-250 VS a super zoom.

I use both, the 18-250 on a Kx and a Panasonic FZ35. For small size family prints in good to moderate low light, you won't see a difference and the FZ35 is far more convenient. For very low light, the 18-250 will give much better shots, even with small prints. I made the decision a long time ago not to take my DSLR on family vacations and use a high level point and shoot, Canon SD4000 IS, for the low light shots. For me, it's so much easier to take the two small cameras rather than a DSLR. Once you take the DSLR with the 18-250, why not bring a prime and maybe one other lens just in case? Before you know it, you're lugging around a bag of lenses. The other posters are correct, however, in that a DSLR has a far greater potential for creativity and large prints.

SDM Response from Pentax

I don't want to flay a dead horse, but below is the response I received from Pentax on the SDM failures. I emailed them with the concerns and pointed out that I shoot Pentax professionally.

Dear Mr. Boerger,

Thank you for contacting Pentax.

PENTAX Imaging Company in the US has analyzed our sales and repair data. This
information shows us that the warranty repair rate on all SDM lenses is at, or
in most cases well below our normal return rate. Additionally, this takes into
account all types of warranty repair. If we analyzed only repairs related to
SDM failure, the repair rate would be well below our average, indicating there
is not an issue with this system.

If you are in need of further assistance, please respond to this email or call
our technical support center at 800-877-0155.

Sincerely,
Randall S.
Pentax Imaging Technical Support

Note that the statistics they site are only for warranty repairs, whereas several posters said their lenses failed, multiple times, out of warranty. I have put off upgrading to the K5 and buying additional lenses until this issue has been sorted out. I cannot in good conscience continue to shoot and recommend Pentax if the SDM lenses are indeed flawed and Pentax refuses to acknowledge there is even a problem. Is this a case of we will never know and you takes your chance, or have they quietly solved it behind the scenes and hope it just goes away? The response to the K5 stains showed excellent company responsibility. It makes me wonder if the SDM failures, and I do believe they were real, were a limited bad batch that may have run it's course. Sorry to bring this up again, but I am at a decision point on the Pentax system. Additionally, I thought you might want to see the response.

Three and four repairs on the same lens is well below the normal return rate? This response from Pentax brings me to a turning point, whether to continue with the company or move on. I have never owned anything but Pentax and shoot it professionally. How am I to continue with a company when I cannot buy their high end lenses with confidence? How am I to recommend a company that is so obviously ignoring a problem? Shall I tell folks that they make great cameras, but beware of the lenses? Frankly, I don't even want to think about it any more, and that might be reason enough to move on.

I applaud Pentax for quickly acknowledging the stain problem and offering an immediate fix. Technology fails sometimes and it's not the end of the world. Their complete silence in the SDM issue, however, is seriously stupid and jepordizes future and current users. Wake up Pentax.
