Incorrect exposure with Miranda 35-70mm K-mount

Whatever you do with a Pentax digital and this particular lens, you have to rely on the camera, not so much on the lens to get the exposure right. When it's sunny out try setting the lens to f16, the camera to auto-ISO (very important) and use the camera on P (for program) or A (for auto). Look in the front of the lens to make sure it is actually stopped down. You should get a relatively good exposure this way.

Miranda lens?

I have a 35-70mm lens under the Marexar brand. (This is what's on the lens cap). It has a Pentax K-mount but is fully manual. I believe it was originally made for a Miranda camera. I am currently using it on my Pentax Q7 which I obtained at a Salvation Army Thrift Store. I purchased a $19.95 adapter from eBay so I could use any Pentax K-mount lens with the Q7. The Marexar seems to be a fairly good lens to use with the Q7 and at 35-70 is equivalent to a 165 to 329mm lens in 35mm terms. (The Q7 sensor has an effective 4.7 multiplier).

I bought a 28mm, f2 and 135mm, f1.8 Mitake lenses from Spiratone in the late 70s for my Pentax H-3 screw mount camera. I tried and tried to get good images from both and finally came to the conclusion that both lenses were a P.O.S. Pentax then brought out the bayonet mount MX and K-1000. I sold the Mitake lenses and got bayonet mount Pentax lenses and cameras. MUCH happier.

RAW+ vs. RAW vs. JPEG

Thanks for your answers. I am now back to shooting RAW+. Given the fact that I DO like to do post-process in-camera, Magdalena Weinheimer of the Facebook "Pentax K-1" group showed me the difference between creating a processed JPEG from a RAW image vs. creating it from another JPEG. I will ALWAYS modify an image through RAW Development now (never did before). If anyone is not sure how to do this and to differentiate between the two methods, please let me know and I will walk you through it. I'm now a much happier photographer.

I like to process in-camera, so thanks for all the above answers. I switched to LR in December 2013 and hardly ever use it. I am an old school style photographer (started in 1959) and usually know how my photo will turn out, before I take it, as in pre-visualization. When I had a PC I also had a bootleg version of PS which I really liked. Couldn't use it when we switched to a Mac in Feb. 2014. Appreciate any and all comments. Thanks!

RAW+ vs. RAW vs. JPEG

I asked this question on the Facebook K-1 forum and got what I consider to be "guess answers." So here goes.

If you shoot in RAW, then decide to go into RAW development to produce a JPEG will that JPEG have the same quality as if you shoot in RAW+ to begin with?

Using the JPEG produced by the RAW development, will Digital Filters produce the same quality as if you had worked on the JPEG image produced by RAW+ ?

Shooting in JPEG only. Will these images be the same quality as if you had used RAW (only) and RAW development or RAW+ ?

Really questioning why I am shooting in RAW+. Should I just shoot in either RAW or JPEG?

I cast my vote for No. 1. While a central subject like a person would have been better, it has great atmosphere. I would have voted for No. 15, but it is just a hair too bright.

I love this image. It is deceptively simple. Explaining the fact that it is a reflection in a hay bale almost ruins the fun of how it was created.

Great shot.

Lens Comparison-Sigma vs. Pentax

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question! I have been a photographer since 1959. Most helpful responses came from jatrax and interested_observer. Throughout my photographic career, I have used prime lenses, especially with my pro work with a Pentax 6 X 7. I love the versatility of zoom lenses, however. Unless you're blowing up every image to 20 X 24, you may not notice much difference. In other words, for me the versatility of zoom outweighs the image of the prime lens. This question was generated because I noticed a difference in quality between the 250mm f.l. on my 18-250mm vs. the Sigma 70-300mm. Thanks again!

Not to be rude, but the prime vs. zoom lens discussion has been going on for 50 years. I don't have the luxury of buying prime lenses and need zoom for versatility. This is why I asked the question limited to the lenses I have.

Lens Comparison-Sigma vs. Pentax

Hello-

I have been using a Pentax 18-250mm, f3.5-6.3, ED AL (IF) lens as my standard, leave-on-the-camera lens for most of my photography on my Pentax K-5II. The only thing I've noticed is that this particular lens doesn't appear to be as sharp as it could be at 250mm (my imagination?). I know this lens is currently discontinued.

I have acquired two other lenses, both Sigma brand: A 28-105mm, f4-5.6, UC-II and a 70-300mm DL Macro Super. They're both full frame lenses.

My question is, aside from the 18 vs 28mm and 250 vs. 300mm focal lengths, am I better off, quality-wise, using the single Pentax 18-250mm OR the two Sigma lenses?

I know I may be splitting hairs, but would really like to know.

Thank you!

In-Camera Image Modifications

Hello,

I have a technical question which may be splitting hairs, but here goes. I use a K-5II and have it set up to shoot RAW +. Which means every shot I take gets two camera outputs, a RAW file and a JPEG.

My question is, whenever I decide I want to do some in-camera modifications to an image before I remove the card and load it to my computer, which file does the camera produce the modified image from, the original RAW or the original JPEG file? The resultant modified image is a JPEG, but I think it would be preferable to have it produced from the original RAW file rather than the original JPEG file.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I didn't recommend not using screw mount lenses, I just said they were much more difficult and limited in their functions than fully automatic, bayonet mounted lenses.

I have two completely manual lenses which I use on my Pentax K-5II, a 50mm older style Pentax with the stop down pin and a newer 500mm Opteka, f8. Note: These are both bayonet mount and don't require any M42 screw mount adapter. I rarely use the 50mm but do shoot more with the 500mm. My philosophy has been to use my Pentax 18-250mm completely auto-coupled lens in preference to the 50mm, unless for some reason I ABSOLUTELY need the f2 speed of the 50mm, which is very rare. The 500mm must always be used on pre-set, MANUAL ISO; since it WILL NOT WORK at all on auto-ISO. Once I set my f-stop on the 500mm lens, it will work with the camera's auto shutter speed. If you're hand holding the 500mm, you have to set the ISO to at least 800 on a bright day and 1600 on a cloudy day. On a tripod the 500mm will work OK as low as ISO 80. All this is crap you have to remember. So, my recommendation over a long time of experience of working with screw mount adapted to bayonet mount or non-auto bayonet mount lenses, is to avoid their use unless you absolutely have to. I view it more as a novelty that these old screw mount lenses fit today's camera bodies and part of the Pentax nostalgic ad campaign. In actual, practical use however, using screw mount or non-coupled bayonet mount lenses is a pain in the butt.

Yes, the light level was low. The camera was set on auto-ISO and P. I can punch up the contrast a bit and resubmit if it will help in the contest.

I kind of think the softness adds to the love in the photo.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Pentax K-5 II Using RAW +

Yes, there are two images, side by side and one is a RAW file, the other a JPEG.

I think the point of my question is being misunderstood. What I'm talking about here is what appears to be two different types of JPEG images. When I shoot RAW+ both the RAW and and the JPEG images resemble each other. I would expect the RAW image to look unprocessed by the camera. But the JPEG ALSO looks like the camera hasn't done anything with it.

When I shoot in JPEG only, I can see the camera adding the extra saturation I requested or shooting in Bright or Vivid.

But I do not see these camera modifications to the JPEG images when I shoot in RAW+.

That is the point. There appears to be two different types of JPEGs here.

I initially used Picasa with my old PC. Now viewing in iPhoto with my Mac. I do understand there's an imbedded JPEG inside the RAW image. However, the JPEG image right next to the RAW image looks like it has had zero camera controls applied to it. This is not the case when I shoot JPEG only, which is what I've gone back to.

Pentax K-5 II Using RAW +

I was caught up in the debate over RAW vs. JPEG and decided to shoot RAW+ for a while. After loading the double photos into my computer, I noticed that, other than the difference in the file sizes, the appearance of the RAW vs. the JPEG images were pretty much identical. I am using a MacBook Pro with a Retina screen.

This leads me to the question of precedence. Is the JPEG image made FROM the RAW image? Or does the JPEG image reflect the camera settings that would be invoked if you were shooting JPEG only? That is, if I choose Bright or Vivid images with bumped up saturation, will the JPEGs be made with these parameters taken into account. Appearance-wise it looks like the first case is true.

What is the precedence and picture taking protocol for RAW+?

Thanks!

Image Stabilization-Why Turn It Off When Mounted On Tripod
Posted By StrasburgBarry
Replies: 7

Hello-The instruction manual for both my Pentax K20D as well as the K-5 II says to turn off the image stabilization when mounting the camera on a tripod. However, nothing further is said in either manual. What are the consequences of NOT turning it off?

I have left the image stabilization on for all tripod mounted photos and haven't noticed any difference in the quality of the photos or heard the stabilization trying to work. Is it hard on the camera? Does the camera keep trying to stabilize when there's little, if any, camera movement? Does it somehow damage the camera or the photos?

Would like a further explanation and comments from Pentax tech.

Thanks!

StrasburgBarry

p.s. I always use a wireless remote when the camera is on a tripod.
