No metering mode selection? I had hoped for a return to the K5 type switch on the mode dial. Perhaps this means there are further modes like high key and low key? Someone mentioned the 3rd dial maybe being a display as well as a dial. This would be a powerful feature allowing a broad amount of options for the function selected on the RH dial. If anyone has used a Ricoh GR this smaks of Ricoh's nigh on infinite number of customisation options.
WRT to the screen being removable (and consequently losable) I think this is well off the mark. It will have the same hinge as the 645Z, already proven and made. The first pictures show it held onto the camera as the hinge was likely left off that would be why the camera was taken off disply and returned with the screen in place. If Ricoh have any sense there will be an app that allows control of the camera the same as Olympus Image Share without the need for a Flu Card.

I use WiFi with my Olympus E-M1 way more than I thought I would when I bought it. Remote shooting makes family portraits a breeze and file transfer (albeit JPEG only) is a real boon. On my most recent holiday I was able to upload 200+ shots via my tablet to my Dropbox account this way.
I was never interested in the Flucard, it always seemed like a gap filler to me.
I used to think the implementation of Live View was pointless, now I wouldn't be without it.

Morning.
I noticed that SRS Microsystems have dropped the priced of Pentax lenses. There is nothing on their homepage about a sale but there seems to be £70is off the 200, 300 & 60-250 DA* lenses.
I checked on Clifton Camera's and they are advertising a 10% sale until August 31 although their reductions don't seem to include the DA*'s.
Had a look at Ffordes and they are carrying the same prices as last week so they would be good for a price comparison.Maybe this is available in other territories?
Think I might be about to becomt the proud owner of a 60-250...:D
Cheers

You can set the time for the shutter to fire at. So long as the internal clock of the camera matches your wrist watch (stopwatch, phone etc...) you can be in your first shot.

Here in the UK (Scotland in particular) there are very few 'chain' camera shops. We really only have electronic sections in department stores. Until Ricoh bought them I had only seen a Pentax DSLR twice in a shop/store. The first time was when I got my K200D (you shold have seens they guys face when I turned down his suggestion of a D80 instead) and then when the K7 came out and even then it was ony in one shop.
Pentax cameras were always reviewed in magazines after the Canon and Nikon equivelants. Now they are in every major camera shop & department store. Amateur Photographer (a popular bi-weekely publication) had a huge pull out advertising section in the run up to Christmas all for Pentax DSLR's and lenses. There editor has been roped into help promote the brand too.
I have never been so confident that this brand will continue and excel as I am just now. The wiriting is on the wall, are you having a laugh?!

18mm is more than wide enough. Shooting wider than this gives a different perspective to your shots with much consideration to what is in your foreground and what may not be visible on the horizon.
I was in the Isle of skye recently and proposed to shoot mostly with a 10-20mm. When I switched to my 18-135 @ 18 I realised how much tighter (although still wide angle) it is but how much more I seemed to gain in frame because more distant points of interest became larger.
Have a bash at using the 55mm end of your lens too for items in the foreground (flowers, signposts etc..) with softer backgrounds.
If you are keen to go for wider than 18 a good place to start would be a 16-45. This is a decently sharp lens, gives you a taste of wide ultra angle and are in abundance on the second hand market.
The advice from Des re the superzoom is sound. I shot exclusivley in with a Sigma 18-250 last year on a beach, on safari and in a city and it performed very well.
You may find you have preference for one particular focal length and style of photography and the superzoom allows you to try all this out without investing in individual lenses.
Most of all get tore in!

Image stabalised and STM focusing, thats a lot of spec for $299. Ricoh, are you watching?! I would love it if Ricoh released a WR UWA.

I am east of the A9, not west. Originally from Lanarkshire so I guess I am subconsciously wishing I was back there, don't tell the wife:D
Aye the A9 is a journey in the truest sense of the word. Not having weather sealed gear in this neck of the woods is a waste of our wonderful countryside.

When opened this post I expected to see some comparison between the K3 and the OP's curent camera. some insight into ergonomics or, intelligent use of their set up that would mean no need for the advances of the K3 not this nonsense.
Buy yourself a Canon and be done with it

The Sigma 18-250 is a great lens. Used in good light you will be surprised how sharp it can be.
Cracking AF that is very quiet and excellent close focus . I highly recommend this lens.

I had the 18-250 HSM and now have the 18-135 WR
I used the Sigma on Honeymoon part of which was a safari and had some excellent results. The lens is plenty sharp up toward the long end dropping off a wee bit at 250. Using the K5 high ISO gives you some latitude here to stop down to f8/11. It has brilliant min focus distance, decent macro ability and very quick AF.
I sold it when I returned home and bought the Pentax purely because I live in the N.E. of Scotland and need the WR. The Pentax is decentsharpness , quick and quiet AF though not as quiet as the Sigma I think it is just as quick. The Pentax has a much better build quality and is more compact, definately nicer to handle. I can recommend both but would say I would go for the Sigma for holidays (vacations if you are across the Pond) and I knew there was little to no chance of inclement weather. Having the WR allows you to take pictures at times and in places where other lenses would let you down . Either way you are going to get a good lens. Cheers

Thanks but I think I will keep my options open. I am quite interested in a second hand Canon 70-200 f4 for ~£350 and a 50D for ~£170. Both weather sealed and the best 70-200 available. ---------- Post added 02-24-14 at 07:36 PM ----------
I contacted Tamrons importers, intro2020, who advised the lens is available and not discontinued. I went back to Clifton Cameras who told me they were no longer going to supply the non VC lens in any mount.
I looked through all the websites of official suppliers on the Tamron website and Ffordes, SRS and Clifton were the only ones who stocked mount and even then it was not the full compliment. This isanother reason for looking at Canon.

A fair few of the offical stockists dont list it but Pentax does seem to be the poor relation in availability.

I saw it on the Tamron UK website and have not read anything about it being pulled.
I did wonder if it was no longer available in K mount if it was because it would be rebadged as the Pentax 700-200 :)

Does anyone have or has used both? I am leaning towards the 120-400 because of the wider short end and faster maximum aperture. I am curious how the 500 compares to the 400 @ 400mm. Being able to shoot at 5.6 instead of 6.3 is more important to me than the 100mm extra reach but sharpness would definitely be the deciding factor.

I was on the Clifton Cameras website looking at the Tamron 70-200 that they have on sale unfortunately though none left in stock.
I contacted them to see if they could order one and was advised that Tamron has discontinued them.
I dont know if this is exclusively in the Pentax mount (the lens is on also out of stock in Sony mount) so I checked with SRS who dont stock it but are Tamron stockists. They said they can order it in 7-10 days so I am unsure if it is discontinued or not.
Anyone know anything about this?

Yep. There are some great deals on second hand Canon gear.
I have only bought one Pentax lens from new and that was the 35 f2.4 everything else is overpriced IMO. Too many Pentax lenses are second best to Sigma or Tamron and still so much more expensive. I bought a Sigma 18-250 HSM to use on my Honeymoon rather than the Pentax equivalent as it was £200 cheaper AND came with a 3 year warranty.
I am scared to spend > £1000 on a 60-250 with the (historical) reports of SDM failure and Pentax only offer 2 year warranty. I can get 3 from Sigma and 5 from Tamron. Their equivalent lenses are a third and 50% cheaper respectively too.
If I didnt love my K5....!
Edit : Pentax Pro centres offer a 2 year guarantee, not 1 as I have previously stated.
