The DA Limited Club

Hey everyone. So I've theoretically been registered for a couple of years, but have mostly been lurking until recently. But now that I'm trying to be a little more active, I thought I would maybe post a few pics using my beloved Limiteds, starting with my DA 21, since it ends up being my default lens in many situations.

If you really want to stick with Limiteds, I'd like to give a quick shout out for the DA 21mm F3.2 Limited. While I haven't used it at a wedding, I have used it as my primary lens for a number of parties and such where there was limited space to move around. I can usually get the shot without having to worry about bumping into someone behind me or someone stepping in front of me as I push the button.

That said, I would def. recommend the two camera setup (with one of the recommended telephoto zooms, like the 50-135). Whether the first camera uses the 16-50 or just the 21, though, is a matter of taste/style.

It was underexposed. When I first "developed" the photo in Lightroom 1.0, it got way too noisy when I tried to up the exposure (as I mentioned, it was a very overcast February afternoon). With the improved noise reduction in LR 3.0, it now looks much better.

Right after I bought my DA 40mm Limited a couple of years ago, I took it out for a spin through Central Park. About midway through the day, I crossed over the Bow Bridge, which had about a dozen photographers trying to get shots of the birds. They all had the standard massive rigs. A couple of the guys and I sort of looked at each other's equipment and had a short chuckle. I said something like, "Yeah, I know this isn't quite as impressive as your's," to which one of them replied that they were jealous of my tiny pancake. It was a pretty entertaining.

Oh, and by the time I got to the other side of the bridge, I saw a flock of geese flying in, so I quickly swapped out to my lowly DA 50-200 and got a pretty good pic of one of the geese, even though it was overcast and February.

EDIT: managed to break the link when I updated the photo on flickr. See below for newer version.

What was your first camera and why did you get it?

Know I'm late to the game, but wanted to join in the fun that everyone seemed to have a few months back...

While I had a few random 110 and 35mm cameras I used as a kid, I wouldn't really describe any of them as "mine." My first personal experience with an SLR was a K1000 in my high school photography class. Sure, the K1000 was almost 20 years old by then, but they were solid pieces of machinery and I loved mine. I was so sad when I had to turn it back in, so I eventually pestered my parents until they got me a Pentax P30t. It wasn't top of the line or state of the art, but it was certainly a step up from the K1000, and I loved it. It took me years to finally give it up - finally for a K100D and then a K10D, which I'm still using. I've been wanting to upgrade the K100D, but have been busy spending money on other things...

I still have the P30t around. I feel bad that I don't take it out anymore (I feel like it's my unloved stepchild or something), but it's such a hassle now to get film developed.

I've had some great times with my K10D, so would definitely recommend it if you are trying to save a little money, but it is definitely weak at higher ISOs. It tops out at 1600, which is quite noisy. Oddly, my K100D tops out at 3200, which I want to say is less noisy than the 10's 1600. I've thought about selling the K100D a few times, but always end up hanging onto it just in case I need to do something low light... That said, the K100D doesn't work with the DA* lenses, so if you are planning to invest heavily in glass, you probably want a K100D Super or later.

I haven't upgraded to 2.0 yet, but I've been using LR 1.x since shortly after it was released and quite like it. As others have said above, it can't do heavy lifting image editing, but for 99% of what I do, it works wonders. Basically, I only go into PS if I need to actually clean up the image (e.g., remove a stray tree branch that's sticking into the frame or such). But all of my color correction and such is done right in LR.

I believe Adobe has a free 30 day trial, so I would recommend downloading it and giving it a try. My guess is you will find yourself hooked by the time the trial ends.

Hello everyone. I'm Charles and I currently live in New York City. I've been using Pentax gear since the mid-90s - first a K1000 in my high school photography class, then my own P30t, and now a K100D and K10D. On the lens front, I'm mostly using the DA 21mm and 40mm Limiteds and the DA 18-55mm and 50-200mm zooms. I've been wanting to upgrade the zooms for a while, but there always seems to be something more pressing... That said, my next lens purchase will probably be the FA 50mm 1.4, since it looks like such a great deal.
