Edixa body is m42 so just needs a m42 to k adapter ring to mount on the K1. Schacht Ulm lenses are quite common and cheap.

Just got a c/y zeiss 15/3.5 and it has this problem of shade coming into shot on the pentax, because the lens has to be correctly positioned, and also not quite hitting infinity yet. Still up close get very nice result; 6" focus. The daisy is very sharp at 100%.

Adaptist?

Having cut the recommended length off the stopdown lever on some zeiss cy lenses I find the film bodies wont couple anymore. Following Fenwoodian's experience that the earth wire for the spring ring makes no difference I did the mod this morning (filed off some of the back of the original mount and cut off the m42adapter lock from the spring ring). Yes the wire broke off in the process, and no it made no difference to the functioning of the camera.
With the mod the lens rotates anticlockwise into the mount so the aperture and focus markings are on top, but more importantly the stop down no longer fouls the mirror. The lack of sealing ring with the adaptist mount is problematic because there was some lint getting in.

Edit; the adaptist mount allows the correct register distance with the c/y mount - the inner ring is deeper. Also my stopdown lever surgery was over zealous and if you cut just the right amount off then it works still with the film body. Maybe there's a way of getting a sealing o-ring into the adaptist mount. Sadly the adaptist site states that there is no more stock.

Same is true for the K-3 and K-5. Just saying that the K-1 is no different.

Adaptist?

Just got the adaptist mount from the post office - had to pay a £25 VAT and handling fee, on top of the £70 the ring itself cost (still good value). The K-1 mount comes off easily, just like others - no wire. The adaptist ring fits perfectly and now my contax lenses go on - no problems. With the diy mod the lens rotates anticlockwise and ends up with the distance and aperture scales at the top, whereas this now results in the scales being on the bottom.

It's dark now, and weather has been horrible today anyway, but will post a pic as soon as i can. If i can bear the stress I will snip off the spring m42 retaining tag and modify the original mounting ring in the future some time.

Anyway - nobody should be put off using the adaptist ring with K-1; it's easy to do and no issues whatsoever.

My dad got a contax 137 and some nice lenses around the time i got a pentax super a in the 80's. I bought a 137 just so i could use his lenses, and it was very good too. Now i use pentax digital slrs and modify the mount so contax lenses fit, because they are very good. Pentax and Contax share a lot of history together, including a failed initial launch of full frame digital; MZD and N digital, in 2000 - both 6Mpix Philips sensor.

Very glad the K1 has made it into my hands at last.

Adaptist?

That's very reassuring, as i have a K1 and am waiting for an adaptist ring to put on it. I modified the mounts of my Kx and K01 already and have had no problems, but the DIY mod requires cutting the m42 adapter spring lock off from the spring steel ring, which is stressful and it's possible to break the ground wire in the process. The DIY method may be better than the adaptist ring but it's worth a try. After modifiying the mount my c/y lenses rotate anticlockwise into the breach and they dont foul the mechanism.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience of removing the K1 mount.

I have just got a K1 and can confirm the schneider cinelux projector lenses cover the full frame, with just a tiny bit of vignette at the top corners (could be removed by more accurate mounting). I converted mine to PK by wrapping the mounting tube in a layer of craft foam, then screwing on a m42 adaptor. This allows some adjustment for focus distance, and then mounted in cheap extension tubes to attach to the camera. Obviously this is macro only. If it could be set at infinity it would badly vignette.

Could be a very good slide copier too.

Well having modified the camera mount I have been able to check my other vario-sonnar 80-200 that was untouched, and it is much softer with no real pop or focus at infinity. Hopefully that just means the first copy I got was misaligned in my favour and the newer one will need the leitax conversion to remove registration error, certainly the one i have been using the past few years gives a razor sharp image. I only got the backup because it's hard to resist a bargain.

Might be worth getting a WR adaptist mount now, while they are still available, in anticipation of getting a K1. Does anyone have any experience of this product; hitting infinity etc?

The distagon 28/2.8 arrived and was easy to adjust - the filter ring screws off, so the front cell stays put, and 3 little screws need loosening so the focus ring can be rotated a little bit and locked at the new infinity point. I actually took the focus ring off completely so i could check the infinity point, then put it back at the new position before replacing the locking ring and screwing it back down.

Well i must confess that the modification of the camera was more daunting than the lenses, but having done the Kx first (takes a good picture but not worth much) I felt much more confident to then do the K01. Now I would prefer to modify the camera and leave the lenses unmodified, but the 0.3mm error remains. Old contax lenses can have their helicoid adjusted and there is no leitax or equivalent possible for them. I just got a 28/2.8 distagon aej for £130 because it cannot be converted.

Having used the manual lenses with digital bodies I cant see any going back - the 40xs is a pretty good lens but the kit zooms are just toys really. The contax lenses outresolve the sensor.

I found this interesting site; CONTAX CLUB Carl Zeiss ??? ? ???? - C/Y lens on Pentax DSLR showing how to shave the mount, rather than the lens. This allows the contax lenses to be used unmodified, and keeps the natural functioning for pentax lenses. After removing the fraction of a mm from the back of the mount from 3 places, and snipping out the m42 retaining spring (care not to break the ground wire) the contax lenses can be mounted with all 3 bayonets engaging by rotating anticlockwise. The 0.3mm difference in depth of the inner ring prevents most lenses from achieving infinity, and i wouldn't be happy to follow the instructions to remove some of the plastic of the camera body. Another nice thing is that the stopdown lever wont foul so there is no need to cut the lever off (the c/y stopdown lever does operate the same way as the PK but they are not compatible).

Another option is to buy a ready made universal mount from these guys; Pentax K+ Multi-Mount (WR version) - Adaptist otherwise the inner ring of the mount needs to have 0.3mm shaved off, which is not a little job, like the filing of the backside.

The vario-sonnar 80-200 doesn't seem to be affected by this 0.3mm registration error, but maybe would be even sharper when mounted at the correct distance. The m42 registration distance of 45.5mm is consistent between pentax and contax, but they position the bayonets at this slightly different depth.

Thanks for correcting me, must have read the info somewhere, but it was wrong. The other similarity between contax and pentax is their reverse compatibility with m42, just using a zero thickness ring. The advantage of the contax mount is the lock being on the side, so you can either leave the ring on the lens, or in the mount, without having to fiddle with a little spring. This similarity accounts for the similar registration distance, but there are those little differences that make life difficult. If you dont mind manual focus and aperture the contax zeiss lenses are a treat.

FYI the collaboration of businesses across the globe was good for everyone; Western electric helped start businesses in england, europe, and japan which still manufacture telecommunication and audio today.

edit; I found that for a year prior to partnering with Yashica, zeiss (west) were collaborating with pentax, with some lens designs, advancing the smc formula (zeiss invented coating), and producing the K mount for Asahi. So it's no wonder the c/y mount is so similar - the differences are just there to prevent easy cross purposing. It is disputed as to whether Asahi purchased the name pentax, or took it from zeiss (east). Certainly Contax was the first brand of camera to use the m42 thread, with it's pentaprism reflex camera S(1949).

Schneider's partnering with Samsung, and previously Kodak was mostly about their expertise in computing lens design and QC, rather than manufacturing, but it is likely most lens manufacturers are dependent on such expertise - the 18-55 kit lens seems consistently familiar across most brands.

You can convert c/y mount lenses to K fairly easily (following Rio-Rico's advice on shaving). I have just finished adapting a yashica 28/2.8 ML so that infinity is available, but I had to remove about 0.2mm of the inner (registration) ring. Only 2 of the 3 bayonets engage with the pentax mount, and these have to be 'shaved' because of the slight difference in depth. I just do it by hand with a file. Once the mount engages with enough rotation to be secure a hole can be drilled to let the locking pin retain it. Having succeeded with the 28, i then did the 50/2ML which was also not quite getting infinity.

Although you can get proper replacement mounts from leitax that is expensive, and limited to newer mm lenses and a few ae. Also the screws that have to be removed first can be a right pain to move as they are glued in place. I have now adapted zeiss c/y vario-sonnar 80-200/4 (these are very cheap and good), sonnar 85/2.8 (very good but not quite so cheap), tele-tessar 200/3.5 (almost free and very good too) and planar 50/1.7 (great and cheap). The zoom and 200 needed no alteration to the register for infinity (the zoom is fully internally focused etc so the rear element does not move). For the sonnar I had to spin off the front cell, release a couple of locking screws and rotate the focus ring to bring a new infinity point to the helicoid - easy once you figure out how.

If I sell a few things then I will be able to buy a K1 to make full use of these zeiss lenses, which are far superior to the yashica ML - not that they are at all bad. The reason c/y lenses can be adapted so easily is that contax and pentax were partner businesses (there is a clue in the names). The first m42 mount was a zeiss design, and there was some collaboration over better coatings, but the contax stop down lever goes the opposite way to pentax, and sometimes needs cutting off to prevent it fouling (a bit drastic i know, but I wont go back to shooting film really, and there's no way I am getting a contax digital).

For less than £100 you can get a c/y cz50/1.7 and adapt the mount to fit pentax (see riorico's advice on shaving). Not many lenses get close to such perfect contrast and resolution for such a low price. I am in the process of laser-cutting some mounts (have to get my daughter to show me how to use the software) - with some 0.6mm thick washers there's no need for shaving and with the new ring all 3 flanges will engage the mount.

If buying from japan there will be an extra 20% plus handling on import into the UK.

have just solved the infinity focus- it was those three grub screws, just had to pull the focusing ring up to loosen and then turn the ring to another registration point. so spin out the front cell, loosen the three grubscrews, pull up the ring to loosen and rotate a few degrees and tighten/replace. i went a tad too far and had to bring it back a wee bit. its quite hard to nail infinity without hitting the end stops.

me neither, i just gave it a trim and its real scratchy now. i got the method of converting c/y to pk from someone on this forum (riorico). the alternative is expensive leitax which only works on newer, mm mounts, with a few exceptions. also adjusted autofocus following this sites instructions. i only noticed the focus error when i got a 40/2.8 xs. when i have loads of money ill get a full frame (any lens will go on a canon). one day we'll get a full frame with moving sensor, capable of fine focus (like the contax ax) and interchangable mounts maybe. one day a photographer will be asked to design a camera and they will want to keep all their old lenses.

that radiant softness, especially with flowers, is what i love about the yash 50/2 ml. as my grandad always used to say; 'they're pictures, not photos' he was an old cinema man and used a leica iii, which disappeared while he had carers. he worked on sound, amplifiers and speakers, but he couldnt take a decent picture for some reason, he never got in focus - probably needed to adjust the rangefinder. when i was a kid (30 odd years ago) i got a zenit em and pentacon 50/1.8 with a roll of agfa 50asa process paid slide film (still got the lense - not bad). people complain about carying a heavy camera about, they should have started on a zenit and they'd realise how lucky they are today. its batteries running out that get me down (kx on aa's - always use eneloop, cheap rechargables are useless)
