Why does this exist?

It seems there are three trains of thought that have been expressed in this thread. Some folks understand and or share the desire for a FF camera. Others consider it silly to move to Sony due to the impending release of a Pentax FF(????). Others think there is malice in my initial post or are offended thinking I am abandoning Pentax. Not that it would matter but I am keeping my pantax gear that is one of the main reasons I am buying the A7R. I think the Sony is the camera Pentax would/should have produced and I am disappointed they did not.

The list below is some of what I based my decision to purchase the A7R rather than the k-3 or continue to wait for a FF Pentax:
1. The Sony seems to be a bargain (even at MSRP) for what it is and what the initial reviews indicate from a performance & innovation perspective.
2. I don’t have to reinvest in glass. I own some of the best Pentax FF glass ever produced and can use all but one lens (WR 100 macro) on the Sony A7r. No worries I own the non WR version of that lens also. On the same topic I can use just about any brand lens on the A7R. So if I want to purchase a modern FF lens I can. I currently have no desire for new glass but that might change.
3. The cost of a k-3 will drop significantly in 5 months to a year. I may consider buying one then for marco & long glass use. It is a nice camera but not worth MSRP just like the k-01. I don’t think the Sony will lose value as quickly. Another reason to skip the k-3 is that I own 4 Pentax APSC cameras at this time & don’t need another..
4. Camera bodies are disposable. I expect to replace the Sony in two years due to advancements in technology. It may be replaced with a Pentax FF. Who knows?
5. Waiting for Pentax to produce a FF is no longer an option. I don’t see any way for them to gain market share at this point. If Pentax sees it this way it does not make any business sense to produce a FF.

I took the time to post this for those that have indicated that my decision is driven by desperation.
My decision is based in reason and logic. It is based on my needs yours may differ.

Pretending you know what Pentax will release & when .... sounds a bit desperate to me.

From what I have read the A7R is not a do it all camera. I think the Sony FF and a Pentax APSC will serve my needs best over the next few years.

Good Luck!

That's the point. Lets have a place to share this info. It will be a data point for Pentax to gauge the extent what their costumer base will go to in order to use a FF. I think the A7R is what Pentax should have developed it is different (a pentax trait) and does not compete directly with Canon and Nikon.

From everything I read it is a ground breaking camera and will serve my FF needs well. I would rather Pentax but they have left the FF game to other producers. As it has been said many times on this forum "you want FF don't let the door hit you in the butt". I did not let the door hit me in the butt. I will continue to use my Pentax lenses. The initial reviews on the A7R indicate the IQ from it is on par with the 645 MF level if not above that so it just makes sense to me to go in that direction.

I thought it was a constructive post. I think it would be more useful to share info on using pentax gear than sharing info on what folks think might of should happen in the future.

Pentax indicates through its lens road-map that there will be no FF.
They have stated no FF in words and actions so many times.
I have now preordered an A7R to hang my Pentax glass from.
It would be more useful for pentax folks to have a place to post their knowledge of actual use of pentax FF lenses on any FF camera that pentax glass can be used on. The current pentax FF threads are nothing more than wishful thinking at this point, a place to post stuff on April 1st which is now been declared a national holiday (Pentax FF day).

I hang mine on a k5. If there was a FF I would use both formats depending on the reach I am looking for in a particular application.

If I get a chance I will post a photo of my door repair. My flash hit the ground with enough force to break the red plastic piece off the front, snap that piece in half and all the door tabs snapped off.
Using 2 part epoxy with the door open I glued a small screw in the lower rear corner of the door opening with the threads pointing out. Then drilled a hole through the door for the threads to pass.
When the door is closed I thread a nut on the bolt and the door is now held solidly closed in that lower rear corner.
This would only hold that corner well but the upper corner flexed out enough for the batteries to not make good contact.
I used a mountain bike inner tube to fix this. The rubber is better than any rubber band you might have and never dries out it is also much stronger when stretched. I use it for all sorts of stuff. I cut 1/4" bands and put them around the flash where they would cross over on each side. On the side with the door it would apply enough pressure so that there would be good battery contact. This also allowed full "tilt range" of the flash.
The only down side to this fix is that it takes a few extra minutes to change the batteries. I have been using it in this way for about a year.

Pentax A 400mm F 2 8 Ed If Lens EX 0027075002111 | eBay

Seems like a reasonable price and the lens looks to be in very good shape. The only gamble would be if there is no forthcoming FF to hang it on.

I am a recovering addict (LBA). Like they said at the meeting you're never really cured and the addiction is never far away. I keep telling myself the pristine A*200 Macro in the collection is flawless. Then the next minute I'm thinking sell the A* and get the FA*, yea like that's going to happen. That A* is going to be buried with me. So if I did buy the FA* I would be redundant in the 200mm Macro category. That's an expensive category to be redundant in. How much better is the FA* than the A*? Auto focus is not a benefit to me in the type of lens. I am asking from an optical/IQ standpoint. I have dealt with this seller before & all worked out well in that transaction. There are a couple of motorcycles that sit in the garage collecting dust. I could sell just one, an SMC625 and have more than enough to cover this lens. I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger, just a bit more "Rationalizing this to myself". I'm pretty good at that. Will I get my one month badge or will I buy this lens?
