Sticky: How to use/meter Manual & M42 Lenses on all Pentax DSLRs (K-1, K-3, K-5, K-30, etc)

If you happen to have the A setting on your Aperture ring, you might be able to get better control over the shutter speed if you use the manual f-stop mode. In the AV mode you can still get auto exposure. Also if you use the digital zoom to bring in your subject you can get better focus. If you use the A mode you need to go to the Manual setting. I do not know how similar the K-5 and K-x are but that is how I use the manual lenses.

I have two M lenses. 50 and 135mmt and a zoom that I can use. All in AV mode. I tried Manual but it did not work all that great. I have set up my camera to detect the lenses and it asks for the focal length. However what do I do with the zoom or should I just forget it? I also have the 2X converter that comes handy in a pinch.

Set your custom setting 4 option 22 to permit the use of aperture ring. If you are inserting a M lens like in my case and you turn on the camera it will ask you for the focal length. You can assign the metering to the green button to get the correct exposure and get great shots with the manual lenses. I hope this helps.

Just some shots I took today. I got my new lenses and I am very happy with them. The first two were taken with Tamron 28-70mm, The robin was taken with a Sigma 80-300mm and the last two with a manual Topeka 500mm lens I recently picked up. I am getting better at this.

Just a thought, a reflector would help or the use of the flash. I do that when I take sunset shots. Great shots.

This is a wild passion fruit vine and indeed it would take over if you let it grow out of hand. This vine is local to the ABC islands of the Dutch Caribbean. I took this shot in Aruba and I have one more shot with bees that I would love to share and I will post that tonight. Now I got new tricks and tips I can get ready for the spring photography. The are a few nice opportunities to get great shots so I will be busy outside as opposed to the "darkroom". I love the digital photography it revived my hobby.

:)

I have a few other ones that I will work on. I understand going to much into the brightness but I work in Tourism and we try to make the colors very bright with high contrast between the colors.
I will take the example and work it out from the raw file. I have more of these flower shots.

I am like a baby in a new world and slowly moving from snap shots to great shots. :)

Thank you all I like the change on the sand but the sand is really that white. The color is really sugar white and looks like it is bleached. I will go back to the untouched Raw file and will clean it up with my PS Elements. Once I start getting paid for my work I will get the PS itself. I love the deep blue color of the sky(personal favorite of mine). However you are all right about bringing the tree that is the subject more to the fore front. I just had a little to much blue in my shots because the AWB was set to cloudy at that time(new to digital). Right now I keep it on auto to be on the safe side. Later on I will experiment more with that. You are great in helping me out in becoming more aware of composing the shot rather than going with the what shows up on the pic. See another beach shot that I took.

Thanks again.

I wanted to avoid the shadow as much as I could to make a better flow. However that angle would have made it too much of the beach with all the additions and buoys to ruin the clean shot. That is why I avoided that angle, plus all the man-made additions.

Yeah you are right on the second one, other than the star effect, it does not have the wow effect to show the beauty of the beach. I will bring some other ones to the table.

My other thing will be to add the shot details to the picture.

Thank you.

Mixing up the old manual lens with the DSLR with good results. I know it is a boring shot, but just wanted to share the quality that I am still getting with the "old" lenses.

Need help with my K-X

Ok here is the deal, I used the manual lenses because after my trip my lenses were dirty and need to be cleaned and/or fixed. The Iris on my lenses are not operating to well and I think I need to have these looked at or just buy new ones. I opted for the latter. Anyway back to taking shots in live view. You have to hold the button in and for the mirror to go down and the shutter to release. I was only waiting to hear the one click and was not waiting to hear the shutter release to work. That solves this and I am a happy person now.

Actually this past WE I had to use my old manual lenses with my K-x did the focusing in Live View and they still work as a charm. My two AF lenses bit the dust so these will have to do until I get my new lenses. Too bad they do not make them as they used to any longer. However I do not shoot film any longer so the K1000 is sitting there catching dust and the seal is not working any longer and it leaks light so I will save it as antique together with half the world.
