Thanks and yeah. I planned to shoot until my memory card was full (it was partially full already. I took maybe 160 or so shots and got a goodsized handful of keepers. Timing is everything really and with using a flash I could't exactly shoot in burst mode. I thought this one was cool with the cone and the ball. Here's another I thought was pretty cool: |

Got out the Helios 44m (a replacement one for the original 6 I had that got stolen) to play for a bit today (and figures the thread needed a bit of a bump . . . ) |

Thanks Georg the other. It's a seabiscuit. I think. I have some random shells that I use for playing around with macro and lights and junk. I always get them out when I'm experimenting.
This is one of my twins. I was playing with lighting some more. He's playing his gameboy so he'd hold still. I'm really liking this Helios 44 for portrait work. |

I bought some cheapo optical slave strobes and was playing around. This is from my first attempt with them. I tweaked the exposure and contrast post (and converted to bw as well).
Helios 44. My goodness I love this lens. |

I've used my 18-55 lens with a reversing ring. Yeah you have to hold that tab to open the aperature to about where-ish you want it and it takes some coordination. But it IS doable.

Just a quick snap in the backyard. ISO400, 200mm, f/3.2, 1/500sec, at as close as the lens will let me get then cropped.
and there are trees, TREES! in the background. Can you see them? No. I love this takumar-esqe bokeh it delivers.
(and it's getting a tad dim outside)

My trip to Scotland was over a month ago so I guess it's time to share a few pics in parts. So here's a few from the Dunnottar Castle and area for starters. This area was so beautiful that the pictures pretty much took themselves. The light was gorgeous when we weren't being rained on. |

I'm sorry but Fairy Tale of New York by the Pogues is the very very best Christmas song. Ever. :) You Tube |

The last part of our trip was Edinburgh and seeing some of the surrounding areas.
Royal Mile Edinburgh
Edinburgh Castle
Antonine Wall near Roughcastle (I have another version somewhere where I removed those powerlines but seem to have misplaced it. You get the idea . . . :))
Blackness Castle on the River Forth
The end. You can see the entire set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spotformel/sets/72157627797457309/ |

Lordy I haven't worn makeup for over 20 years. I'm not new to shooting by any stretch but I just haven't had many ops for travel. And when they are so limited there aren't as many choices involved. This is supposed to be an "anniversary" trip but it's not like I could take this trip with hubby, then take another photo-centric trip on my own or with friends. That's just not gonna happen. So I have to try to squeeze it all in and keep him happy as well as satisfy my photog/art needs.
I need more money. That's it! That will solve all the problems and justify the trips! Lol.

Got mine a couple weeks ago and finally had a chance to go into DC and play a little. This is from the Postal Museum (a Smithsonian).
Another from the Postal Museum
And one from Union Station, the escaltor up to the parking garage |

I bought the Sigma 17-50/2.8 when my DA*16-50 became unreliable. I've had it for a few weeks now and am quite happy with it.

While in Seattle, staying with a former college roomate, we went into the city for some shooting fun and found, tucked under the what becomes the Alaskan Way Viaduct, a skatepark still under construction. Judging by the skateboard scrape marks it's also in use as well. Really cool and fun place to shoot. That alone made the parking hassles worth it. :) |

Oh these are cool. They epitomize everything I love about BW (sharp, crisp, strong contrast with all the shades of gray). Beautiful. I'm so glad I looked.

I have gotten excellent service from both places. I've purchased and returned items and have never had any issues with either place. They both have great customer service. What's even better, if you ever get a chance, is to visit the stores themselves in NYC. It's like Disneyland for photographers.

I'm finding that I'm becoming more picky about how comfortable a bag is to lug around over how much it will hold. One problem with the slingshot is that it's limited to one shoulder. If that shoulder gets tired oh well. Tough it out. The Kata 3n1 solves that as it can sling on either side or backpack. And if you want to go from one to the other, you can put it on as a sling, cross the other strap and buckle it to distribute the weight on both shoulders, then unstrap to have the convenience of a sling for access again. I really want to get one but need to wait until my budget frees up a bit :(.

People seriously have enough time to peruse more than one forum on a regular basis?
Honestly, I have not the time to spend on a quality basis with more than one forum. So this one is it. I probably wouldn't have even bothered with any but this place has been so friendly and welcoming from the start that I popped in for a quick perusal and stuck around. As you can see I've become rather attached . . . :)

Many who study biology end up teaching an universities and conduct research on the side. My b.s. degree is in bio and my brother in law is a university prof in bio (entomology), travels the world more or less, and is even required to take photos of his study subjects. If you're comfortable with teaching that's a head start. But keep in mind, to get to the dream job level, you'll have to see it through to a Ph.D.

Good grief. We need to have some sort of photographer's flash mob thingy somewhere downtown (in a decidedly non-touristy area just to be obnoxious).

I have 10-year old twins. Cleaning their room is ever an issue. What goes on here between a certain few members reminds me of what I hear from them again and again:
"I'm not cleaning unless he cleans!"
"Well I'M not cleaning unless HE cleans!!"
And on and on and around and around it goes. Endlessly. What you few do here in the P&R forum is akin to that very juvenile behavior. Each refuses to stop as long as each perceives the other as engaging in that same behavior. Excuse my vulgarity (I have boys, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) but you are all engaged in one big pissing contest, trying to outdo the other. It's all so very childish.
So here's the deal and it's what I tell my kids. Hows about we all just worry about our ownselves and our own behavior and take some responsibility for it. Do the right thing for the right reasons on your own end and maybe, just maybe, it might rub off on someone else and we can have civil and enlightening conversation about the issues that affect us all, regardless of our viewpoint.
K?

A lot of places will print 8x12 and 12x18, which are the proper aspect ratio for your camera. These are the sizes I usually print and have had good luck finding appropriate sized frames for them after matting. I do, however, cut my own mattes.
