Thanks for the comments. For full disclosure - actually the wedding wasn't mine. But, I had introduced the bride/groom to each other 6 years ago - so was a privilege to be there.
Thanks to my brother Phillydad for the 'beanbag' tip. For most of the animal close ups - I placed a beanbag on the side of the truck to secure the camera which seemed to help (as I couldn't take my tripod on the truck).

Thanks all for your kind words....encourages me to keep working on technique (especially the lighting). Some amazing smiles out there in some of the harshest environments and I want to do their life stories justice.

Many thanks for the comments - esp. caution about disturbing people. That is one of the benefits of being able to use the 300 zoom. Impressed that picture number #2 particularly struck a cord - just another reason that having other people (who weren't at the event) are able to see the emotion that is evident in the pictures (or not).
Whenever I travel - I also try to make a good local friend who serves as a 'cultural adviser' and makes sure that whatever I do - whether eating or taking a picture - doesn't offend. In the case of Ethiopia - I have a friend who is an older, wise man and keeps me out of trouble....or at least too much trouble......

Hi - just a quick note of thanks for the opportunity to join this group. I have a lot to learn about equipment and techniques!
I work in agricultural development which has lead me far flung places in Eastern and Southern Africa for most of the past 15 years - generally places considered 'just beyond the end of the road'. I used to rely on a point/shoot, but finally took the plunge and got an Pentax K-7 while in Afghanistan thanks to my brother ('Phillydad' who showed me the videos from 'Heie' regarding how the Pentax can take a beating and keep on shooting) before moving to Nairobi for my latest job assignment that takes me all over East Africa and beyond. I am very much an amateur photographer and still figuring out my 55-300 and 18-55 lenses. But, here are a few initial pixs from a recent festival in Ethiopia (Timkat) that I was able to attend in between assignments. Thanks to the size of the 55-300 lens - I was able to get behind the lines, close-up to the faithful worshipers, as they thought I was a 'professional' photographer.
So - any input/advice is most welcome.
