Don't write off the DA* 50-135mm on K-1.

I have a 50-135 and a 60-250 an use both frequently on the k-1. The 50-135 only in crop mode and due to size and weight mainly, and i think the fact that you can see more than the actual apsc picture (rectangle) in the viewfinder really helpful for composition, especially for tele lenses.
At 135, it covers almost fullframe, but then i rather just not zoom as much and stay crop. Thats the main difference: the 60-250 is rather ff at the short end and sort of offers a wider zoom range if you are happy with apsc resolution: 60-350 equiv vs 70-200 equiv; if you believe in crop factor equivalence ;)
Anyway, both still great lenses :) and for me tele was never the reason to get ff.

This might be true if you assume Adobe will not rise prices in the next three years. But actually they can do what ever they like and you will end up with paying or you will no longer be able to edit older photos. To me this is a really bad dependency which is to avoid, even if i pay more in the end. With classic infinite licenses you know you could use your program as long as your hardware runs, with a subscription, you know nothing. I know it's a trend in general and very convenient for sw companies, but whats your benefit? Would you rent a property without knowing what the price is next year and maybe even lose acces to your stuff? Quite exagerating here, i know ;)

Maybe i'm not aware of some guarantees you get on future rise in price or access, so please correct me if im wrong. But there's two very important things:
1. Guaranteed access and possibility to edit as long as you like
2. Paying for new SW when you like

But i see your point, if you use LR and PS, with reasonable behaviour on the part of Adobe, the deal can be fair for now.

I did some research; to make sure i dont tell too much bs ;)

I tryied dxo version 2, a year ago, so maybe version 3 is optimized.
The feature i criticised is called "lens sharpness" and theres a hint "the effect of this correction can only be previewed at zoom levels higher than 75%". Which was a major issue on my tablet.
Do you know, does this still apply @madaboutpix?
Anyway, most (incl. me) seem to agree dxo is well worth a try, just watch out ;)

Edit @madaboupix: yes, exactly what you describe by "judgability".

Very nice pictures, and indeed perfectly sharp. I might been not clear, i did not want to say the output jpgs are not good in any way, but the 'appearance' of the image while editing differed depending on the zoom level. This might only be an issue with some screens/resolution combinations, but i could not asses sharpening when viewing the full image. When zooming, suddenly sharpening is applied. As i said, i firdt thought its an issue on my pc, but there are review s and threads around discussing it. Thats way i simply suggest to try programs first. I dont think MF would help here though :)

I switched last year from LR6, mainly to avoid Adobes subscription scheme and because of LR being slow (in particular zoom to 1:1). I tried various tools, in particular DxO, ON1, C1.

As some have already mentioned above, it really depends on what is important to you. For me, the program has to run also on a not so powerful Surface tablet and a local curve editing tool is a must. Cataloguing and Import, on the other hand, is not important to me as I like to keep a reasonable folder structure on my disk manually anyway – and I don’t hundreds of images daily. I have been using C1 now for about half a year and I am very pleased, and I never imagined how slow LR was compared to others! I would confirm though that C1 is weak in supporting Pentax, e.g. lens profiles are virtually non-existent. But I would not agree that it is any more difficult to use than LR and there are plenty of good tutorials online.

I really liked DxO, considering price and functionality, but I thought to have a strange issue with rendering; full view of the photo seemed not to show the same details/sharpening as when zoomed in. Meanwhile I’ve been told that’s supposed to be so, but I still think that’s just really annoying (you can google for “dxo sharpening zoom level” to find some information).

It takes time, but I’d say try at least two tools before you buy and make sure important features and results are pleasing. C1 seems to aim for professionals I just felt that’s the safest bet to not have to change again soon; and i bit the bullet regarding price.

I also prefer the portrait shot. I think the viewer is harshly confrontated with the high mountain and clouds, as the road leads the view directly to this impressive wall (here i think the somewhat longer focal lenght enhances this impression). While this might not be 'pleasing', it seems much more interesting to me. The landscape shot seems to me just as a roadside snapshot without any message.

Regarding pp, i agree that there could be some more (local) contrast, in particular for the clouds. Is there really full white somewhere?

Anyway, great shot!

Thank you all!

Dave, we will definitely have a look at this book.
Ben, these pictures are exactly what we are looking for. I did not find a book in the article, but the mentioned term "kyoushou jutaku" helps googling :)

Mickey, let me know if you can remember, im curious.

Hi folks!

A friend of mine is looking for an illustrated book / photo book about japaneese tiny houses.

We do not now if there has ever been such a book, and didn't succeed googling. But I think, if it exists, maybe one of my fellow forum users knows about.

We would appreciate any hint where to look!

Hi folks!

So, with my ND3 filter (aka welder's goggles) i have to reduce shutter speed 10 stops when properly mounted. Would mounting it reversed allow me to increse shutter speed 10 stops?

Seriously, i glued a 52-55mm step up ring on my DA 40 XS, so that i can mount my ND Filter with 52mm thread on it. But then the filter is mounted reversed. Do you have any reasons why not to do that?
I'm thinking of coating etc., but doubt there is an effect. Filter is a B+W f-pro.

Switzerland - bring the DA*300 or leave it at home?

Hi!

I live in switzerland and i often travel abroad without check in luggage, so i think i know the constraints. When i'm on dedicated photography trips in switzerland i often take my 60-250 with me, because hills and mountains can give an interesting "layered" look (example Layers | Swiss Alps seen from Mt. Kronberg, Canton of Appenz? | Flickr). But that thing is too big and heavy for most trips or hikes, so often i only rely on a range up to 100-135mm (100macro or 50-135), quite often only taking a 35mm and a 100mm with me (on full frame). I tend to travel with 17mm, 35mm, 50-135mm abroad with cabin baggage. Cropping and stiching is commonly underrated in my opinion - if this one shot requires it.

If you are not hunting for animals i don't think you will use 300mm on crop. But of course there could always be that one shot, thats why we can discuss this on and on and on ;)

Just on the lens, not connected to the camera - to discharge any resicual capacities. I also thought that should not have any effect on the camera. Proper designed, not even a defect (shorted) and mounted lens should have an effect...

---------- Post added 01-04-18 at 07:20 AM ----------

Thanks for the hint. But with a "locked motor" the battery charging state is shown? My camera does not turn on at all.

I'm aware that no one yet succesfully changed a 60-250 to screwdrive (except this one russian...). Some partial success with limited focus range was made. Nothing to lose - i thought

---------- Post added 01-04-18 at 07:23 AM ----------

Thanks for cheering up. It's not to bad as i hardly used the K5 anymore...

Dead K5 and dead SDM

Hi all,

I’ve been quite destructive the last weeks and have a dead 60-250 and a dead K5 now :/

A few weeks ago my 60-250 stopped focusing (sdm...). Yesterday I had some spare time, fiddled about, turned every wheel while pressing the af-button, I temporarely shortened the sdm contacts, covered them, etc.all with no effect.

Eventually tried this – or started to try:
How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video - PentaxForums.com
After connecting the cable (computer to K5) the camera turned on shortly, the battery symbol blinked empty and turned off again. After inserting a new battery, the symbol changed from full to empty in less than a second. Now the K5 seems completely dead, even when using a fully charged battery. I tried removing lens, card, battery, waited several hours, no effect.
Sooo… any idea what I could try to bring the K5 to live again? Shouldn't the K5 blink when inserting a card even when off? Anyone in need of spare parts or an idea for another dignified application?

To me the battery indication, i. e. the fast change from full to empty looks like an internal short circuit, which eventually killed the K5 completely. That’s why I don’t dare to mount the lens to my K1. Do you think its plausible that the lens damaged the body?

Thanks for your comprehensive description! So pixel size and final resulution is not important to consider? My gut told me with a higher resolution / smaller pixels i may have to adjust the sharpening parameters like radius etc. - I'll play with radius then anyway.
Your settings sound comparable. You seem to sharpen a bit less, which makes sense as you sharpen the tiff afterwards. I will try that workflow.
As camera calibration i have no choice, its set to "embedded". With the K-5 i had a choice - don't know why.

Thank you. As i mostly shoot iso <= 400 i don't really need NR, this would imply i should may use a higher value for sharpening by default.

Yes, that's what i meant. I'm sitting in front of 900 shots from my holidays, of which i expect to delete 600, edit 30 in detail and leave the rest more or less untouched with a preset.

Nice shot. So you indeed use a default sharpening? I don't quite understand what you mean.

So you sharpen every single image from scratch? Because without shaprening my raws look much worse than every phone snapshot ;)

(not sure if this should be in the processing forum section...)

Hi all,

Before i start manually developing photos i apply a preset with the following setting:

Basic:
Temp 5000
Tint 0
Clarity +30

Detail:
Amount 75
Radius 1.0
Detail 60
Masking 55
NR Luminance 5

Lens Corrections:
Enable Profile
Remove CA

Afterward i mostly only adjust the temperature (and all the other adjustments not listed above... exposure, blacks/whites, etc). As long as i don't shoot high iso i don't touch the details section at all.
This is mainly derived from my K-5 setting, which worked imho well for exports of 1920x1200 and fullscreen view or flickr.

so, anyone willing tho share his settings? maybe some hints what i'm completly missing or doing wrong in your oppinion? Any other settings you use by default? Any settings of these you think should always be checked manually? any special camera calibration profiles?

I used it to lock full cards, too. But as the K-1 is delivered without a usb-cable i now lock the cards before inserting them in the card reader... i don't trust windows and think i might lessen the tiny probability of a failure on the next trip.

K-1 and DA 40 Limited

I'm quite excited about my 40mm XS on the K-1. It's stupidly looking small and has a very nice FOV. As far as i know the 40mm ltd and 40mm XS are optically identical, but i'm not shure.
For my standards the XS is definitely usable to good. Extreme corners are indeed blury, but the rest is fine - at least when stopped down. With open aperture i'm usually not looking for sharp corners.

As there seem to be quite different opinions i added an example (a boring scene and with preset adjustments for sharpening, compression, etc.) as well as a picture regarding vignetting.

EDIT: 1:1 samples are from left center to left bottom corner.

simplified mode change possible?

Thanks for your input. I'm aware that aperture/shutter/iso are conserved across modes/power cycles in M/Av etc. and it's also what i like. My problem is i use mainly the following two settings:
1. M-mode, spot metering, SEL-AF-point, AF-S and
2. Av-mode, multi-segment-metering, auto-iso, auto-AF-point, AF-C

To switch from one of the above settings to another i have to
- chose mode
- change metering method
- set auto-iso
- set focussing area
- set AF

This is not really handy. So i thought about user modes 1 and 2, but then aperture/shutter/iso are not conserved over power cycles :/
Edit: I don't care if its conserved when changing modes, but i'd like it to be saved when changing lenses, the battery or just turning the camera off for a few secs.

I'm just surprised because every "normal" mode works differently and i can't imagine a case where you'd like this behaviour. Why should power off for lens or battery change reset all settings? But i'm realy interested in someone explaining it to me :)

May some of you have an other suggestion for me (without user modes). I usually work in M with spot metering (for ettr) and SEL-af for mostly landscape, buildings etc. Sometimes i'd like to switch to a more automated mode, e. g. AV, multi-segment auto-iso and auto-af. Any tips how to achieve this without having to change all these setting separately? I'd like to isolate this question from the first one, so please answer here.
