I actually think a black K-5 with a small prime is as inconspicuous as a small(er) compact. I got to play with a friend's x100 the other day, and I would say it attracts more attention than necessary, being so pretty/shiny/retro/awesome.

I have the AT-X Pro 28-70mm F2.6-2.8.
2 issues:
1. it overexposes A LOT...I usually shoot -1 2/3. Doesn't bother me that much.
2. my copy doesn't always want to autofocus at 28mm, especially at infinity. Strangely enough, the second I touch the zoom ring and I'm at let's say 30mm, everything goes back to normal...anybody else with this issue?

Dude needs to get laid or something.
I stopped wasting my time right after the "street photography" chapter, where dude indirectly calls HCB "morally corrupt".
Dude...

Here's my take for the challenge, seems like you're lacking contestants.

I bought a used K-5 with 50 thousand clicks a few weeks ago, from a local professional travel photographer. Unlike most people who go for "mint" when buying used, I kind of liked that my new(old) camera has a history.
So this K-5 has 50 thousand clicks, has been around the world a couple of times, spent time at +60 and -40 Celsius, climbed to 20 something thousand feet in the Himalayas, was banged around constantly for 2 years, and works FINE. At least there's nothing wrong with it that I could notice.
This guy is also into star trails pictures. One too may times he left the same K-5 outside at -20C, set on interval shooting, till the morning. The last 2 hours of his exposures were usually blurry, because the camera/lens was getting covered with a pretty thick layer of ice. And still shooting away.
I doubt you can get that from Nikon or Canon and their "great" customer service.
Somebody needs to go troll somewhere else.

What do you guys use for black&white conversion, nick and basset especially? I can't seem to get it as contrasty as you guys do. I have lightroom, should I give Silver Efex a go?

So...I love lenses. Looking to put together a complete kit in time, using decent finances to get decent IQ. I don't want to get crazy with super expensive stuff, but I also don't want to use kit lenses forever. Most I see myself spending on a lens is maybe around 500 bucks, give or take.
I've compiled a list of my picks to cover everything from wide to tele, including what I already own(in bold). Please feel free to jump in with ideas, Pentax or third party, everything goes. Yes I could browse the databases for a couple more weeks and figure out everything that's worthy, but we can never have too many lens threads. After all, we love lenses, don't we?
Here we go: Wide:
DA 15mm F4 Limited
DA 12-24mm F4
Sigma 10-20mm F3.5
(kind of need something cheaper here, I don't shoot wide that much) WR:
(I'm thinking one zoom one prime, not too worried about it right now cuz it's summer)
DA* 55mm F1.4
DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 WR Fast zoom:
Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 (own - love/hate relationship already)
(thinking about trying) Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Daily prime:
DA 35mm F2.4 (own, like, can't fall in love with plastic though)
Should I get one more? Portrait:
DA 70mm F2.4 Limited
FA 77mm F1.8 Limited Macro:
Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro (own, love, works for portrait as well)
Is D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro better? Tele-zoom:
DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED (own don't like)
DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED? (lots of people swear by it) Manual lenses:
M 28mm F2.8 (have, it's ok)
M 50mm F1.7 (have, love it)
M 135mm F3.5 (have, not crazy about it)
Want to get: Bokina...and what else?

I went through the same dilemma a couple of weeks ago. I ended up with a k-5, after I handled a k-30 in the store - and I have no regrets whatsoever. My used k-5, after being around the world 2 times, climbing to 20 thousand feet in Nepal, getting coated in 2mm of ice when left outside overnight, feels better in your hands than the still plasticky brand new K-30.
There are pros and cons for both of them, but I don't think the difference in IQ is big for the casual user. K-30 has better video and a tad better AF, K-5 has better DR and advanced features. For me, it felt like the K-5 is the kind of tool you can develop a relationship with, while K-30 is just another camera one would replace in a year anyways.

Funny you say that, I just got a K-5 yesterday. Miles better than the K-x.

It's funny how Pentaxians have been making fun of Canon/Nikon users for ages, but so many of them are ready to jump ship based on rumors...

Thank you all for trying to be helpful.
After counting the pros and cons I got myself a K-5:)
Tav is great, and manual mode with 2 control wheels is also amazing, and auto ISO parameters equally so.
After a mere 24 hors the K-5 is great...silent compared to the K-x, not plasticky, even better ISO performance, faster AF, AF points in the finder, top lcd, control wheels, dedicated buttons, WR...the list goes on. I have to admit I tried to find the metering modes in the menu for 5 minutes until I realized I have a button for that. Tossed the manual in a corner and never looked at it. If you don't get lost, you never learn the way.
After 2 weeks of Pentax I have 2 bodies and 8 lenses. What have I gotten myself into?

I'm obviously doing that. I think I'm just frustrated at not being able to shoot as fast as I want, that's all...

Uhm there's not really an application, I'm just learning...and I'm pretty hectic in my shooting, most times I'm not even realizing that Av is giving me 1/60 shutter speed, and I end up with motion blur. Not that heavy, but can be clearly seen when zooming in. So I prefer higher shutter speeds.
I was randomly shooting in the park today, it was windy, whenever I was in the shadows Av was giving me speeds under 1/100, all my trees ended up blurry. Almost talking to the K-x, and saying stuff like "dude, please bump the ISO and give me decent shutter speeds".

I've read about Tav, and although sounds pretty cool, it is not exactly what I was looking for.
Can I set shutter 1/250-1/6000, F8 only, and auto ISO? On any Pentax body?
