Nope, no filter. I use a yellow filter when shooting b&w, but nothing when doing colour (except possibly a polariser, which I didn't use here). This is just a naked 105mm f/2.4. I've got another couple of shots with lens flare, and they're not great at all - I've one more where it was deliberate, and I haven't scanned yet, so I'll post an update if that one worked out.

Tell me about it - got (probably) my first shot on Explore a few days ago. I didn't even really like the photo! Anyway, this is from a 67, a bit overexposed:

This one's from the same set, and nicer (IMHO):

I've been using the Android LightMeter app along with a grey card for day shots, and guesswork and counting in Bulb mode for the night ones. I've only just started to develop and scan shots I've been taking since the summer, so hopefully will progress a bit with this thing.

I've a K-30 and am also in Ireland. Yep, the WR is really something - I dropped it in a bog once, and have had it in utterly horrible weather up in the Wicklow and Kerry hills. This was using the DA 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 WR. The K-30's pretty good at high ISO - given how dark it'll be until about April, you might want to look at getting a fast prime or two.

The DA 35mm 2.4 is only fast-ish, but is excellent for the price. I really like the 50mm 1.4 FA for parties, where you have a bit of space to move around. I have the older Sigma 30mm 1.4 as well, and it's quite nice, so long as you don't mind a bit of distortion and the soft corners (personally, I like it - it adds character).

I haven't noticed any movement to the right-hand grip on my one - I'd guessing that this is the rubber insert at the front of the grip? You probably want to check that out - keep hold of your warranty form in case you have to RMA it.

Nominated. There's a great intimacy about it - the fisheye really helps define the boundaries of what's in the photo. And I love how it's from the child's perspective.

Thanks for the nomination! Yeah, the cropping's something I really struggled with - there's a lot going on in the details, so I guess I've been overly-precious about cropping anything out. I've been meaning to print this one out for the mother in law, so I'll revisit that when I take another look. Thanks again!

Macquot and SKYoung: Thanks guys, I'm relatively new to this stuff, so it's appreciated!

I nominate this photo as I love the classic sci-fi feel of it. The contrasting blues and orange really work; it's like a matte painting from Blade Runner.

I nominate this because I'm a sucker for some negative space.

I took this one last year on a trip to Finland, when visiting my wife's folks. There's an area in Turku's city centre that had remained largely untouched from when it was built in the 18th and early 19th centuries, up until it was opened as a museum in 1940. It's not just remarkable for its age (it's one of the earliest museums of its type that I've visited), but also because you might think that the Finns had other things to worry about at the time.

The museum itself illustrates how residents of Turku lived and worked when the area was built. It's refreshingly free of explanatory signs and modern clutter - if you want to understand what something is, or what people are doing, you need to talk to the workers :)

The lighting conditions were relatively tricky (wide dynamic range, and quite dark overall), but I was able to work around this by merging three exposures taken using the K-30. The good low-light performance helped a lot. The Samsung 12-24 is generally considered to be a landscape lens, but its delicate handling of blues works pretty well here.

K-30 sensor scratches - real or malarkey?

Thanks very much for the responses guys, they're much appreciated. Here's the offending lines:

Yep, cleaning vertically is also a bad idea.

The hell of it was that I felt that I was being very gentle cleaning the sensor, but if I managed to get a nice hard bit of grit under the pad, and the first surface is plastic, then I can see how easy it would be to get a scratch.

Anyhoo, I reckon I'll get myself a big ol' bag of supplies and give it a good clean. After all, what have I got to lose, right?

Thanks again folks,
Rob

I'd just bring the 35mm - it you're minding a toddler, then you mightn't want to be fiddling about with lenses. Wouldn't be great for shots of animals though. I don't have the 100mm macro, but I'd imagine it would be fine for critters? YMMV.

K-30 sensor scratches - real or malarkey?

Hi,

So: I bought a K-30 a few months ago (like a champ, it's a great camera), and I've had to wet-clean the sensor a couple of times, being big into landscape photography, and having to swap lenses between 28 and 24 mm.

A few weeks back, I suspect I managed to scratch the sensor, or whatever filter (I assume either a high- or low-pass filter) is in front of it. I used cleaning swabs and solution, but there's now 2 decent-sized lines at the edges of the frame, and a less-linear, shallower (though still annoying) line in the middle. I shoot a lot at low apertures, so this is a problem.

I've got a (scary) quote for a sensor replacement, but since I have to send the camera to the UK (I'm in Ireland) to get it serviced, projected costs are approaching camera replacement.

My question:
I'm trying to get a handle on how likely it is that I've actually scratched something. I haven't seen many threads on the subject (with any DSLR), and I've seen posts form people in service centres stating that it's a pretty rare issue (i.e. the sort of thing that happens to people that clean with pen knives). I've seen mention that the first surface you hit in a DSLR is generally optical glass, which is pretty hard, and therefore should be hard to scratch. I can't believe that I'd have managed to put 3 scratches in it in one go. Is this the case in the K-30, or is the first surface you hit when cleaning the sensor plastic? Anyone with any service experience?

If it turns out that I haven't actually scratched the sensor, and have instead just spread something over it in a thin line, I'd be a very happy bunny. However, if it really is a scratch, I'd rather try to sell the camera for astro work (the high-ISO performance should be attractive, and the purchaser would probably be handier at removing the IR filter than me), and buy a new one.

Any advice?

Ta,
Rob

Howaya!

My name's Rob, I'm 30 and from Dublin. I've had a K-30 these last 6 months and love it to bits. I've been lurking the hell out of this forum pretty much since I got the camera (especially the lens reviews), at least until the initial LBA dies down. I'm mainly into landscapes, with a sideline in using the camera as an overspecced iPhone at parties.
